The Wildebeest Cup - Men's Veterans 4 - 2 Men's U21s

"What do you expect to see looking out of the BBHC clubhouse window - herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically down the hill from Danson House?" (with apologies and attr. to Basil Fawlty)

And so it was that a challenge for the Wildebeest Cup made by the younger members of the hockey club was arranged to take place on Sunday, 27 December 2009, at Park View Road.

The day dawned bright and sunny after a week that had seen the snow lay deep and crisp and even right up until the feast of Stephen the previous day, but the pitch was, well, where was it? In the absence of a hockey member now being in charge of such things, and the aforementioned weather, no hockey markings had been put down and so it was decided that hockey along football lines would be played, but even these were difficult to see at times. The goals were placed on the 6 yard line, the 18 yard penalty area became the D, (or should that be the box?), and the umpires were left to decide where the 23 metre line should be.

The bar opened soon after 11am and a good number of spectators were there along with the Vets - 15 players including a captain. Now this could be where it started to go wrong for the young'uns - David Humber had received a message the night before from the U21s captain, Sukh, asking that David look after the side as he himself would be stuck in Milton Keynes.

The umpire for the Vets, Alan Sargeant, arrived claiming his chauffeur was the cause of his tardiness, but I later learned that he had had to borrow a whistle from Colin Brine, claiming that he needed one that only blew in favour of the Vets! At least he was there at the start, thus obviating the need for Francis to carry out that task. The U21s umpire, Stephen Mason, however, fresh from umpiring in Devon and for ISCA HC and Exeter University, was delayed playing for morning service in Blackheath, so many thanks to Gurdip for stepping in at the last moment for the first half.

Pre match formalities, (drinks), over, the Vets made their way on to the pitch where the U21s had been acquainting themselves with the first generation astroturf that is traditionally called grass. The Vets won the toss, chose ends and elected to start with the ball (well, the last two of these three took place!)

At this point I feel I should declare an interest in the next two events that took place and will therefore write in the third person. The Vets goalkeeper was expecting that a back three of Simon Brown, Francis Saldanha and Jonathan Rooks would be able to cope easily with the over ambitious little oiks that had rarely, if ever, played on grass before. Firstly he took it into his own head two minutes into the match to take advantage of this season's new self pass rule and upon collecting a ball that had gone off the side near where a corner flag would have been, passed it to himself into the D with the aim of kicking it downfield. The problem however was his aim - he passed it instead to David Humber who slotted the ball into the back of the goal: Nil - one. No less than three minutes later another long pass from midfield by the youngsters, that they had been unable to stop and was clearly going wide and off the pitch, deflected onto Mason's stick in a way that he hadn't hitherto this season managed to stop a ball, and bounced back to the same advancing forward: Nil - Two. Already the recipient of two DotD awards, it wasn't going well!

Undeterred, the forward line began a series of moves, linking with the midfield and placed the U21s defence under spells of pressure, or was that just under a spell? Either way, first one goal was pulled back, then a second, and by the time half time arrived, the Vets were ahead: Three - two. From my vantage point at the far end of the pitch, and due to subsequent imbibing, the order may not be correct, but these goals were scored by Andy Humber, Ravi Channa and Sammy Channa.

Amongst these three goals were well guided calls by the more experienced of the U21s to their younger team members to 'not tackle Francis from there', a short corner drag flick save by the Vet's keeper and a point blank save from Humber by the U21s keeper.

Suitably refreshed at half time, the Vets set out to press home their advantage and in a game that ebbed and flowed as the clouds gathered and cast a gathering gloom upon the proceedings, the Vets scored again through Andy Humber, whilst the pitch got ever more crowded, (must have been the narrow football markings!)

Several short corners to the U21s were repelled as the match drew to a conclusion, despite the big guns of Lee Humber coming up from defence to strike, words were spoken by the U21s umpire to one of the Vets, but the final whistle sounded with a victory to the Vets: Four - Two.

Refreshments were provided in the bar afterwards in the form of chile con carné, rice and garlic bread, crafted by the Mrs Chana's (Milan and Manjit), for which many thanks are due. A short acceptance speech was made upon presentation of the cup to the victorious captain and thanks also given to the umpires and spectators. David Humber thanked his team, which contained a number of colts, and I must admit I forgot to remind him that a challenge should be issued for next year - if of course they're up to it!!

The bar was still open at 5pm when I left just a few of our number to get the big red taxi home.

Thanks again to all players, of both sides, the club for opening and staffing etc, and I think we did justice to the tradition of The Wildebeest Cup. 'Til next year chaps.

BBHC started strong with the ball being passed around well and a few early breaks from the attackers, however halfway into the 1st half a momentary lapse of concentration from the Right Back (Alex Scott) allowed an attacker to receive the ball by the back post and score the first goal of the match. The first half concluded with yet more chances for BBHC including lots of good hits into the D from John Gibbard; however none of the attackers managed to get a stick to them as the Old Bordenian defenders were marking very tightly.

The second half began and BBHC brought the score to 1-1 with a perfectly weighted ball into the D from John which was skilfully deflected into the corner by Andy "Goals" Galbraith - taking both the defender and goalkeeper by complete surprise!

Old Bordenians retaliated; blasting a shot into the top corner of the BBHC goal bringing the score to 2-1. However, the BBHC squad kept their focus and their were some exceptional stick skills from Martin Hickman and Jamie Saunders which tore through the Old Bordenian defence; forcing their midfield to go back and help get the ball out of the danger zone. The BBHC midfield and attack created numerous opportunities for goals, but none succeeded until Martin hit a ball on the reverse to James (at shoulder height) who controlled the ball and smashed the ball into the backboard - this goal was the result of excellent teamwork by all of the midfield and attackers and was well deserved.

Old Bordenians came back at BBHC with aerial balls fed from 16 yard hits to the Old Bordenian attackers but the BBHC defence managed to keep them from scoring with excellent blocks from the goalkeeper, solid defending from Simon Brown and two absolutely amazing mid-air saves from Left-Back; Philip Cratchley.

However, Old Bordenians scored a third goal late in the second half to bring the score to 3-2 and so it put even more pressure on BBHC to score more goals. Sumeet and Rajan Sehra played brilliantly on the left - taking the ball past the defenders and feeding the ball into the D, and even managing a few shots themselves, but unfortunately BBHC weren’t able to convert any more goals.

The game ended with an Old Bordenian short corner where their attacker appeared to stop the ball on the top of the D with his foot, but the Umpire didn’t see it and so the goal which he scored was allowed: Final score 4-2 to Old Bordenians.

I’d like to just point out that our captain, James Smith, didn’t provide the team with Jelly Babies at half-time to give us a sugar boost and so that’s the most likely reason for us losing today.

Merry Christmas everyone, see you in the New Year!

Men's Reports

1st XI 3 - 0 Blackheath 1st XI (A) - Kent Cup 2nd Round (Sunday 6th December)
On a damp Sunday morning BBHC first team got together to play an away fixture against Blackheath in the Kent Cup. After only recently playing Blackheath in the league, we all knew what to expect from this game and losing was not an option.

BBHC started the stronger side from the off and this pretty much continued throughout the first half. As the half continued BBHC pressed harder and harder and before we knew it the ball was being picked out of the back of the net by a Blackheath player, thanks to Neil "Butler" Barr, 1-0 BBHC.

Soon enough a second goal came after BBHC won them self a corner. Up stood Butler with a drag flick and with the aid of the post we was leading 2-0 and a new 2 goal King was born.

This did not seem to bother Blackheath as their heads did not drop and they continued to try and press and catch us on the break. Their continued effort nearly paid off in the second half when a BBHC short corner was broken down and Blackheath had us on the break and were heading towards our goal at pass. Young Alex Webster did all he could to stop the attacker from shooting and letting them get in to the game, which resulted in him being yellow carded for his challenge and foot being used. The short corner that was awarded was dually dealt with and with a little bit of shuffling around BBHC knew they had just had a lucky escape and needed to be switched on for the remainder of the game.

Soon enough we was back to full strength and putting pressure back on Blackheath. After a few missed hits and stray short corners, BBHC knew that one more goal was needed to wrap this Cup game up and finally it came. BBHC won a short corner and David Pyke took the ball on his reverse stick and sent it on its way to the back board, 3-0 to the away side and we had booked ourselves in to the next round of the cup.

Jonty of the day (MOM) Neil "Butler" Barr
Horse of the day (DOD) Jamie "aka lip gloss boy" Perfitt

4th XI 2 - 4 Herne Bay 3rd XI (H)
This week, we hosted the league leaders Herne Bay and it promised to be a fierce battle. The match started very well with BBHC being awarded a penalty flick within a few minutes, which was saved by the Herne Bay goalkeeper. There was then a period of good pressure by BBHC which was sadly ruined when a pass was intercepted by the Herne Bay centre forward who promptly scored. The half was finished when another pass was intercepted and the resulting cross was converted from the top of the D.

The second half started promisingly with good possession and when we gained a short corner we used our favourite routine and the ball thudded into the goal. 2-1 and the game was on. However, another cross was converted from Herne Bay and then we became panicky which resulted in another goal from Herne Bay. A BBHC short corner near the end of the game resulted in a consoiation goal from John Gibbard.

MoM - Tarin Chana for a fantastic performance
DoD - James Smith for missing the penalty flick

Ladies' Report

3rd XI 1 - 1 Wellcome 1st XI (A)
Well dear reader, we drew, yes we DREW. Plus the other exciting element was we had eleven, yes ELEVEN players. So armed with the fact we had a full squad and it was the last game before Christmas, so we were all ready for a good match. Play was lively and Wellcome played a physical game that was for the most part uneccessary and quite a few of our players were injured.

However after conceding a late goal in the first half, Jackie Hewson charged down the right and fired a shot at the goal, brilliant.
Some amazing performances in the second half and we hung on thanks to Lauren Frankis, returning from injury and Lou Fearn.

It was great to end the first half of the season on a high.

Men's Reports

1st XI 1 - 1 Sutton Valence 1st XI (H)
BBHC hosted Sutton Valence this week in a fixture that is always close. The home side started the stronger and scored the first goal after ten minutes when Jamie Perfitt slotted the ball past the Valence keeper. BB kept up the pressure and had a string of chances to further increase there lead but couldn’t convert them.

Half time came and the score remained 1-0, the second half started In much the same way with the home side having the majority of possession. Unfortunately this possession wasn’t converted into goals. With ten minutes to go the away side equalised against the run of play after a hopeful long ball.

The final score stayed 1-1 which left the home team rueing the dropped points.

Horse of the Match: Neil "Butler" Barr.
Jonty of the Match: Ben Bradley

3rd XI 4 - 0 Gore Court Men's 4th XI (H)
A 6-pointer here for both teams saw a shuffle to the line-up which paid dividends, early on. Captain Paul Harvey started up front and scored on the 4 minute mark by rounding the keeper to calm the home nerves.

Gore Court played the ball around well at times but BBHC were more assertive going forward. On 18 minutes, more good work by Harvey saw the keeper isolated and Jon White's goal-bound shot from hit a GC foot half a metre from the line. The resultant penalty stroke was converted confidently by Harvey, out of reach of the GK's dive to his right.

Both sides were warned about stick tackles and green cards were duly presented. The visitors had had few scoring chances but with the young GC forward breaking through 5 mionutes before half time, Peter McArdle demonstrated his lumberjack skills by striking the youngster's stick away with his own. Yellow card was rightfully awarded along with an unconverted short corner. 2-0 at half time.

BBHC were hardly entertaining going forward but the bedrock of the performance was some good defending and effective transition to attack by the midfield core of Ravi Chana and Danny Eyre. GC created better opoenings this half but Harvey went on to complete his hat-trick and White made it 4 before the close. Harvey could have filled his boots and made one memorable miss with the goal at his mercy!

A vital 3 points to keep BBHC in touch with mid-table, New Beccehamians at the HSBC ground next week.

MoM: Danny Eyre
DoD: Paul Harvey - one missed golden chance was pounced upon by the voting panel!

[Andrei Mendis]

4th XI 0 - 3 Old Williamsonians 3rd XI (A)
This was a dissapointing game with few things that went our way, a late game away is never promising and the enevitable happened. However, we started promisingly and we whethered the barrages of short corners and got some ourselves. Which could so easily have gone in. the half ended with high spirits and a hope for the second half.

However, it was not to be as a quick goal from old wills was a big set back. We were looking to get back into it until, in a bizzare moment where everyone stopped except the umpire and the striker, the ball ended up in the goal again, 2-0. A scrappy ten minutes followed this moment in which we should have scored again but the final straw was when a cross was knonked towards goal by none other than our own simon brown, that was kept out but a waiting striker pounced and the game was dead at 3-0.

MoM - Sumeet Dhinsa, for a good attacking performance
DoD - Mairtin Hickman for missing a number of sitters on the back post.

[James Isteed]

6th XI 1- 5 Sevenoaks 6th XI (A)
With only 10 men including two more new faces, this was always going to be a tough game, but the feeling before the match was positive after last week’s performance.

The game started evenly, but slowly the home side began to make use of the space in the BBHC defences and won a short corner from which a well struck shot was soon being picked out the back of the goal. Undeterred we pushed on but still found it difficult to win any meaningful possession in the opposition’s half of the pitch and it wasn’t long before good work down the left side led to a ball being played across the face of the goal to the waiting forward who made it 2-0.

The half ended with BBHC pushing forward but this meant that gaps appeared in defence and a third goal was conceded.

Dropping a fourth player into the defence at the start of the second half meant that the home side’s attacks were now rebuffed and a period of domination ensued during which a couple of short corners were won by BBHC but without success. As the half progressed and the tired (old?) legs began to tell, Sevenoaks scored again from another short corner and a crisp shot across the keeper inside the far post.

Determined not to go down without fighting, a final push by BBHC led to several free hits around the D and one resulted in a deliberate foot by a defender preventing a pass to a well positioned attacker - short corner given. “NO!" cried the forwards and captain. Impassioned pleas lead to the umpires consulting and a P-flick was awarded. Confident from his only other success from the spot this season, (Old Bordenians - 19th Sept), Mason M slotted the ball away despite the keeper getting a stick to it.

With calls for 4 more from BBHC, and Sevenoaks’ desire to score again, the last few minutes were frenetic but goalless.

Thanks to Sevenoaks for providing both umpires, Barry Chivers for travelling and not umpiring, Andrew Hawes in goal playing his first senior game, becoming the third generation of the Hawes family to play for the club, and by playing with his Father, Steve, today, executed a memorable if not unique double - Steve played alongside his father for Bexleyheath HC some years ago.

MotM - the whole team

Final Score Sevenoaks 6th XI 5 BBHC 6th XI 1

Ladies' Report

3rd XI 0 - 5 Canterbury 3A (A)
Once again we travelled to Canterbury at the crack of dawn, to face a strong Canterbury side. Ten players played their best but after being three goals down after fifteen minutes it was always going to be an unhill struggle. To be absolutely fair, they were superb goals and Canterbury played some outstanding tactical hockey.

But we were pleased with our second half where we held Caterbury off for 20 minutes and got a short corner. Some amazing performances from BBHC were by Caitlin Colman, who had some great runs from midfield, and Hayley Patrick who, due to working shift patterns, had only had a few moments sleep.

So I'm afraid dear reader we are rooted to the bottom of he league mainly due to more games being played with 10 players than with a full strength squad.

But we're having fun.

Next week away to Wellcome.

Men's Reports

1st XI 2 - 1 Blackheath 1st XI (A)
BBHC travelled to Blackheath with the intent to take their first three points away from home this season. The game started well with the team putting some slick moves together. Creating some short corners from good work down the wide channels the pressure was on the home side. Despite all the pressure the home team stood firm until half time.

After the break BB started how they finished. A ball was crashed in Blackheaths circle for David Humber to tip in. One nil to BB. With the first goal going to BBHC it wasn’t long before Blackheath then put some moves together only to find the BBHC defence standing firm. BB extended their lead after a short corner that broke down fell to David Pyke who put his shot away convincingly. Now BB were playing out the game when a loose ball in BB’s circle fell to a happily accepting Blackheath forward who then slotted the ball into our goal. This made the last 10 minutes uncomfortable for BB but after defending 4 blackheath corners BB came out with the 3 points which were well deserved and long overdue away from home.

Next week Home to Sutton Valiant’s [sic].

[Kevin King]

3rd XI 1 - 1 Gillingham Anchorians 2nd XI (A)
A number of the usual BBHC 3rd XI players were unavailable this week, but a team of comparable strength to most weeks strode onto the Gillingham Anchorians astro to face their high-flying 2nd XI. This was thanks to a cameo appearance from BBHC old boys Derren Westbrook (now living in Portsmouth with his sailor friends) and Omar Mohideen (now resident in Dubai with his air stewardess friends). Mohideen was in fact back in town for the weekend and received a late call-up whilst perusing HMV in Bexleyheath that morning.

BBHC were fastest out of the blocks with a surging run down the right saw Mohideen take the ball into the D, to the by-line for a smart cutback to Jon White with the Anch's GK way out of position. White's instant, raised slap shot was goal bound but deflected off a defender's stick and out for a long corner. A golden chance to set the tone gone. The delayed arrival had led to an inadequate warm-up, thus the home side dominated the next 15 minutes of possession in midfield, forcing the visiting forwards to sit deep. The BBHC defence held firm with some good marking and timely interceptions.

Tempers also flared in the opening exchanges. This was thanks to some cynical stick tackles from the Anch's number 22 on BBHC's Matt Thurlow. The heated "discussion" that ensued was only verbal and dealt with via some firm words from the umpire and shaking of hands.

The visitors began to find their way into this game of hockey and carved out chances down the right through the tricky Mohideen, but the 3rd XI's cursed form in front of goal this season continued. Westbrook and White threatened the flimsy defence with their silky skills with no end-product. Anchs' midfield provided good support for their backs and were the source of their dangerous counter-attacking ability.

The half ended with a BBHC penalty corner on the half-time whistle. All outfielders went up for the set piece which saw White's shot rebound from the keeper to Andrei Mendis. His lifted slap was again well-saved by the impressive Anch's keeper and 0-0 it remained.

The game was there for the taking but a lack of concentration after the break saw the home side round our keeper for an easy tap-in for the lead. To add injury to insult, Mendis made a pointless attempt to sprint to challenge the Anchs forward and pulled up in pain with a hamstring strain. Captain Paul Harvey (the smallest man on the field) and the Anchs number 22 graciously carried the ex-Belvedere HC cripple to the bench, and BBHC were down to 10 men.

Anchorians faield to press home the numerical advantage and the balance of play remained even and the early pattern of play similar to the 1st half. Short corners came and went, and swift counterattacking took over. Mohideen won a short corner mid-way through the half and White made no mistake this time. He followed up the rebound to his initial shot and found the back of the goal.

Meanwhile, Anchorians' villain-turned-hero continued his dubious challenges to stick rather than ball and was only green-carded. Harvey was in inspired form at the back, intercepting countless passes to turn play over. His only weakness proved to be a number of his aerial passes, which barely went above his own diminutive height! Westbrook showed him how it was done with his own version in the middle of the park..... which went 20 metres vertically, but about 5 metres horizontally. Fun and games from the former-Bexleyheath HC impresarios!

As the final whistle approached, Westbrook set off on one of his trademark runs. Defenders were left in his wake and ,with just the keeper to beat, he could not shoot on target - his attempt flying 2 metres past the right post. The Anch's keeper should be given credit for a solid display.

1-1 it ended.

A good turn visiting turn-out in the clubhouse afterwards was matched by their hosts, but the hospitality only extended as far as the food (soup and bread). Not a word of conversation from the home side. This seems to be the norm for this division, Kent Open Premier B, and it's a big shame. BBHC are by no means models of post-match hospitality but it's up to the home captains of all teams to engage the visitors to maintain the social side of the sport that we love.

MOM: Paul Harvey.
DOD: Andrei Mendis - another injury and accompanied by an impressive cry of pain!

[Andrei Mendis]

4th XI 2 - 2 Bromley & Beckenham 5th XI (H)
This home game was an interesting one with a pretty fair result. The first half was tight with both teams denied a few times. We went into the break 0-0 thinking we should be able to take this game.

The second half started well until BromBecks started to bring the game to us. From a prolonged period of pressure, the ball finally slipped in. quickly though, a short corner was converted by Martin Hickman. BromBecks then scored a 2-on-1 to go 2-1 ahead. Then another chance came along for BBHC and we were again level.

What followed after was a ten minute period of nervousness for both teams with a dissallowed goal from BBHC but finally the whistle went and the result was, fairly, 2-2.

MoM - Jazz - good attacking role
DoD - James Smith - 4th XI captain going to watch England lose the rugby at Twickenham instead of supporting his team!

[James Isteed]

6th XI 0 - 5 Deal 2nd XI (H)
Don't be fooled by anything you might have seen on the league results web page, this was a game that was well contested and hard fought.

Losing two players in the morning, but still wanting to play the game, the decision was made to borrow some of the younger 5th XI players from the preceding match. The game started evenly with Deal using their experience to probe the home defence, but after last week's cascade of goals, a reorganised back line held firm. A deflected shot after 10 minutes caused an injury and necessitated a home side substitution and this seemed to affect the visitors' concentration and home side pressure led to a short corner which was initially saved but forced home: 1-0

Further short corners led to more attempts on goal including a flick against the bar, but eventually one shot was deflected from in front of the keeper's pads: 2-0

The second half followed the pattern of the first, with Deal pushing forward and the BBHC defence holding strong for the most part. Slack marking allowed the visitor's most immobile player a free shot to drag a goal back, but for the most part the home midfield broke down any attacks, ably helped by a short cameo appearance by Ravi returning from injury.

Post match objections were received from the visiting side and so the game was conceded (for league purposes). Thanks to Sammy for umpiring.

DotD - for getting injured, again, slack marking in the second half and being spineless after the match - the author!

Final Score BBHC 6th XI 2, Deal 2nd XI 1

Colts' Report

U18 Boys 2 - 3 Bromley & Beckenham (A)
Right from the start both teams were attacking to try and get the early goal but solid defending and good midfielding from BBHC denied Brom Becks the early goal. Unfortunately a combination of quick skills and a bit of luck allowed Brom Becks to score the first goal on the reverse. BBHC retaliated with a brilliant goal scored by Sukh Chaggar to bring the score to 1-1. Brom Becks was back out on the attack again and one of the attackers took a wild shot across goal which was going off the back line; in his attempt to dodge it Karan Chana accidentally kicked it into our goal. BBHC appealed for a short corner/ penalty flick but the umpire (Karan’s dad; Sammy) gave it as a goal; 2-1.

However, BBHC U18s didn’t let this stop them though as superb skill allowed Karan to bring the score to 2 -2. With the end of the game in sight BBHC was looking as though they could win; with shots from attackers like Rohan just missing their mark! Then towards the end the umpire gave a series of short corners against BBHC; the result was that we conceded a third goal towards the end of the second half and Andrew Mendl got a yellow card in the last minute. It was a brilliant game with a superb effort from everyone who played and we were so unlucky not to achieve a win.

Thanks also to everyone who came to support us!

M.O.M.: Sukh Chaggar

6th XI 2 - 9 Old WIlliamsonians 5th XI (A)
Everyone agreed after the match that this was not a 9-2 thrashing, but that’s how it turned out, and not to BBHC!

On a windswept pitch that somehow managed to avoid any of the torrential downpours that had plagued the south east during the previous 24 hours the home side raced out of the blocks and BBHC found themselves pushed deep into their defence. From the first short corner a crisply struck shot passed the defender on the line, 1-0. Soon after, with the home side making good use of their experienced wingers, a low flicked shot at goal that it transpired was going wide was hand stopped expertly low down to his left by Mason - problem was he wasn’t in goal! Result: P-flick and 2-0.

Spurred into action a reshaped defence started to break down the ever advancing centre forward and supporting midfield , Blake Bartholomew collected the ball on the right hand side of the defensive 25 and proceeded to beat six opposition players with speed and skill on his way to the other end of the pitch, showed the ball to the keeper, retrieved it and slotted it home for a great goal. However, this was soon rebuffed as the half ended 4-1 to the hosts, but not before James Breaker in goal had made several outstanding saves.

Playing into the wind in the second half it seemed the biggest problem was going to be keeping the goals from blowing away, but a series of short corners led to a goal from Danny Ayres, a rocket strike from top of the D into the bottom right hand corner. 4-2 and game on, or so we thought.

Despite at least sharing possession evenly with the hosts for the remainder of the match, it was they that proceeded to take their chances, mainly on the break, as they romped home.

Special mention must go to Peter Wright of the home side who scored a double hat-trick and was gentlemanly enough to buy a round in the bar. Despite the score, MotM must go to James Breaker for possibly his best ever performance and keeping Old Willies down to single figures.

Final Score Old Williamsonians 9 BBHC 2

Unfortunately this was a must win game for us, and as the score line shows it didn't all go to plan. The weather was appalling with horizontal rain, hail and sand in ever increasing quantities, and a very capable Old Willies team.

Very few chances were created by us, as the oppo intercepted most hits out.

The team played well under the circumstances, with some fine saves by Kirsten, great tackling by Lisa and great battling by Ruth. A note dear reader is that Ruth is now injured for the next few weeks.

We then spent nearly an hour on the Rochester bridge on the the return journey, oh joy, oh rapture!!!

Next week Gore Court at home.

Men's Reports

1st XI 1 - 5 Lewes 1st XI (A)
BBHC had an encouraging start to the match with some strong attacking play putting Lewes under pressure. The first chance fell to Dan Lucas who was on the end of a ball smashed into the area from David Pyke. Unfortunately it was Dans foot which connected with the ball.

Despite early pressure BBHC found themself 1-0 down before the move of the match pulled them level with Jamie Parfitt sliding to get on the end of a cross to slot past the keeper after "arsenal esq" build up play from the back through to the forward line.

This however was the highlight of the match as the wheels came off dramatically with a comedy of errors and a yellow card that ended in Lewes taking all three points an a healthy +4 goal differnce from the match which ended 5-1.

JONTY of the Match - Jamie - Goal scoring forward!
HORSE of the Match - Cookie - if you need anything to drain your rice with give him a call!

2nd XI 2 - 2 Gillingham Anchorians 1st XI (H)
After last weeks well earned point against top of the table HSBC, BBHC 2nd XI welcomed Gillingham Anchorians 1st XI.

The game started off brightly with BBHC moving the ball round well and stretching Anch's midfield. However, it was Anch's who took the lead after some quick one-twos in the centre of the park saw them slice through the BBHC defence. A (mis-)hit saw Steve Porter in goal wrong-footed and the ball creep home at the far post. BBHC quickly bounced back and moving the ball round the back well. The scores were soon levelled after a short corner strike was converted by Mark Ashby. With the scores even, BBHC were dominating the field using both flanks to create opportunities. The lead was grabbed by BBHC after a surging run through the middle saw Alex Webster slip the ball through to Andy Tither, who finished the move off on his reverse through the keepers legs. The lead was almost further extended after a deflection in the D skimmed the bar.

The teams came out for the second half with BBHC looking for a continuation of their first half performance. However, the fluidity of the first 35 minutes was not to be found. BBHC had the better of possession but created few chances. As the half progressed, Anch's , slowly found there way back into the game and nearly caught the BBHC defence out on a couple of occasions. With ten minutes remaining Anch's grabbed an equaliser after breaking through on the right flank.

The ball was worked to a lone attacker on the top of the D and slipped past the on rushing keeper. With minutes remaining, BBHC surged forward to try and grab a winner but it was not to be and the scores finished even.

Next week BBHC visit lowly New Becc's.

3rd XI 0 - 0 Holcombe 4th XI (A)
It was a fine day to take the field at Pitch 2, Holcombe Park, for the 3's to face effectively Holcombe's 8th XI. A squad of 13 turned out thanks to Bal Kalsi's availability on the bench and BBHC started the stronger. They hit their stride from the off with the ball being moved around patiently and confidently across the back line and throughout midfield. This allowed the BBHC defence to easily deal with the inexperienced Holcombe attackers.

The home side rarely threatened and failed to register a shot on target in the first half. However, all BBHC's possession and pressure in the D yielded few shots. The lack of a natural BBHC finisher flattered the home defence as they were able to repel most attacks in the end.

The second half was more even, with BBHC's 1st half composure less evident and a more attacking Holcombe formation yielding more trips into the BBHC D but only one clear chance near the end. The visitors suffered 2 blood injuries: Danny Eyre left with a cut on the bridge of his nose, and Andrei Mendis catching a stick above the left eye (due to a slightly poor flat-stick tackling position!) with an ensuing gush of blood. Both returned to the fray, patched up in the style of Paul Ince and Terry Butcher (!).

BBHC's best goalscoring chance came in the second half too, but the attacker dwelt on the ball. The onrushing keeper delayed him enough for reinforcements to arrive as he put his shot wide.

Oddly enough, each side only won a single short corner each in the entire match. A situation that puzzled the visitors but their possession should have yielded results from open play. And Holcombe were kind enough to supply both umpires - thanks Dave and Ray! Thanks also to BBHC's vocal support from Ranbir Kalsi and his wife - much appreciated!

With honours even, BBHC will rue the chance to take all te points that they had the upper hand in for most of the game. A solid defensive display was the plus point.

MOM: Paul Harvey - a lot of candidates this week, Paul won with 3 votes!
DOD: Tarin Chana - for his phantom shower after the match, reentering the changing room on cue as we discussed the very subject!

{Andrei Mendis]

6th XI 1 - 2 Old Bordenians 7th XI (H)
The 6th XI is slowly becoming a settled side with more than half the team now playing every week and so with just one addition to the 'squad’ this week the pre-match talk focussed on which of the seven defenders would not play at the back.

The game started evenly with both teams making forays into their opponent’s D but with no real chances being created. As the half progressed Old Bs began to apply more pressure drawing some excellent saves from James Breaker in goal, but on 18 minutes the defence was breached and the visitors took the lead. Undeterred BBHC fought back and good running from the wing half backs, Rupert and Chris, supported from midfield by Tom and Sukh, began to push the opposition defence back.

The pressure eventually paid off and after a number of short corners, and a spell of domination the ball fell to Clayton Little in the D who withstood some sturdy challenges to work the ball beyond the keeper and knock the ball into the goal on the reverse stick. The team’s first league goal.

Half-time 1-1

An even second half saw both sides create several chances but with defences and both goalkeepers working well it looked as though both sides would have to settle for a draw, when with 4 minutes to go a mis-hit shot from the visitors that was going wide was collected at the back post and passed into the vacant goal. No amount of effort in the final minutes could bring about a second equaliser -

Final Score BBHC 1 Old Bordenians 2

Thanks to all and for 70 minutes of tireless running, MotM - Chris Parker

Ladies' Reports

3rd XI 1 - 6 Dartford 1st XI (H)
We played Dartford Ladies who are top of the league, and as they were intercepting most of our passes, we could see why!

Unfortunately we had a bad start as there seems to be a 'new rule' where the goal is given when the ball isn't hit inside the D! Oh well. With only 10 players we were always going to be up against it, but felt some great hockey was displayed. Kim Selby converted a fine penalty flick to keep us in the game.

The second half was a bit like Groundhog Day, there seemed to be short corner after short corner! The final score was again no reflection on the level of commitment and determination showed on the pitch. Special mentions for Hannah who was very dedicated in trying to get the ball up on the left, and Lisa who came back after a tour of Australia and was excellent in midfield.

Next week- (yes no slip date) Old Williamstonians at the Maths School

Colts' Report

U14 Boys 1 - 1 Marden Russets (A)
BBHC started a little apprehensively with some tentative passing. Marden made the better start with some more accurate passing. With ten minutes gone Jozef replaced Matthew. Jozef was put into his usually left back position where he played well throughout the match with a lot of important interceptions and some aggressive tackles (which earned him a warning and a green card in the second half). With Jozef at Left back, Kieron went to right back and George moved into the right mid position. This strengthened the team and BBHC started playing the ball a lot better. Ben, in goal, was not too busy, however, mid way through the first half Marden managed to work the ball into the BBHC 'D' and, with poor defending on the part of BBHC, Marden had a person free on the back post to slot home the first goal (1 - 0 to Marden).

Not deterred by going a goal down BBHC managed a few forays forward into the Marden 'D' but did not manage to score. BBHC were also denied a couple of clear short corner decsions, one where Nakhil swept the ball towards goal which struck a defender on the shins, but the umpire waved to play on! There were four short corners won, but the first three were not converted. The fourth short corner was won at the stroke of half time. Rohan and Philip swapped duties. Rohan pulled out and Philip took strike. Philip received the ball and managed to work it to his strong side at the top of the Marden 'D', and he manage to get a shot off towards the right post, where Nakhil was in the right position to deflect the ball into the Marden goal (1-1).

Buoyed with their goal just before half time BBHC started the more positive in the second half. Tarin came on for Philip and made a couple of solo runs but the lack of team mates in the opposition 'D' left him with no-one to make the final pass to. Marden were struggling to contain a lot of the pressure BBHC put on them and their goalkeeper made some good saves to keep them in the game. Marden also created some goal scoring chances but Ben made some crucial clearances. Marden started pushing higher up the pitch and started using the width of the pitch a lot better and with the BBHC defence at times were too far up the pitch Marden created a couple of clear chances for a goal but failed to convert them. Also strong performances by Kieron and Jozef saw a lot of the Marden attacks thwarted.

BBHC created chanes of their own but their control of the ball in the Marden 'D' let them down.

The game finished 1-1, however, on the balance of play BBHC should have won the game. Every BBHC player performed well, with good performances by Nathan and Joseph up front, George and Lucien in mid field, Jozef, Patrice and Kieron at the back and Matthew coming on as a substitute up front. Rohan and Philip played well together in the middle of the pitch. Player of the match has to go to Nakhil who worked hard to try to win the ball back and was in the right position to score the goal.

Special thanks to Philip and Tarin for sharing umpiring duties.

Men's Reports

1st XI 2 - 1 Brighton & Hove 2nd XI (H)
BB welcomed Brighton today, after a disappointing result last Saturday. BB started on the front foot with good pressing from Dan Lucas and Jamie Perfitt. After some quick passing around the left from “Data" and some good skills from Sam Ash an awesome pass was made to the predator Lucas to finish a move with a goal.

Some more good pressure but BB couldn't find another goal and after half time Brighton started getting back into the game. The task was made harder with James Baldwin receiving a straight yellow card for chat to the umpire and within minutes of going down to ten men Brighton got the goal to get them back in the game.

With BB were back to full strength and the clock running down into the last two minutes of the game, the home side earned a short corner. A well worked routine straight from the training ground resulted in a penalty flick when Kevin King’s shot was stopped illegally on the line by the Brighton defender. Pressure was on David Pyke having missed a penalty stroke in the first half but kept his nerve and sent the goal keeper the wrong way. A 2-1 result that hopefully will start us on a winning run.

When the draw was first announced, a trip to Devon was not the most appealing fixture. However, this provided the team with a road trip with a satisfying result at the end.

Thanks to the club for providing a minibus, we were able to travel to Totnes (near Torquay) as a team, but due to the incompetence of the captain Kev, the minibus was speed-limited to 60mph. The journey took longer than planned, arriving at around 9.15pm. After half an hour, we set off for town, looking for food and drink. Returning to the hotel, everybody went to their rooms, for sleep after the tiring minibus trip. A foolish Dave Pyke walking to his room toilet, but mistaking the door for the entrance to the room, so shutting the door behind him and realising he was now standing in the hotel corridor in his boxers.

Sunday morning, and we were up and ready to play, but a trip to a local café for a Full English Breakfast seemed an ideal pre-game snack. When we arrived at the pitch, we found out it was not the greatest pitch in the world, with it being very hard under the foot, no bounce and sandy. We were also told it was the training pitch for Luton Town. Meanwhile Dart HC did not look as strong as expected, with a warm up consisting of just hitting a ball between each other.

The game got underway with early pressure from BBHC, and this paid off with a run from Jamie Perfitt running down the byline and pulling it back to Mark Ashby who coolly pushed the ball into the far side of the goal. Our dominance continued with Dan Lucas putting his name onto the scoreboard hitting the ball into the far corner. Pyke also followed this up with a short corner, a sly partnership with King, gliding past the defensive runners and pushing the ball onto the top of the backboard. It was an awkward height for the Dart keeper and the sound of the ball hitting backboard was heard once more. 3-0 was the score at the half-time whistle.

The team talk during the interval was one of emphasising our dominance in the game, and to continue to play as we were. It was also a talk of Rob Porter whinging like a girl that he wasn’t getting enough support. A training bra is being so

The second half was more eventful than the first. Pyke scored once more, a short corner strike put past the keeper’s right side. BBHC received a penalty flick, after a cynical body check James Baldwin would have been proud of sent Perfitt to the floor. The player who committed the foul was shown a yellow card. The penalty flick was converted by Pyke, to complete his hat trick. A couple of minutes later, the luck was turned on Pyke after a strike by the Dart forward, hard and high, struck Pyke on the head. There was more concern for the ball, which after deflecting off Pyke’s head flew over the fence. He got up however, and continued to play. BBHC received their own yellow card, with Data controlling a lifted ball above his shoulder. His reaction to this had a slight element of shock, holding his head in despair, the whole pitch laughing at his surprise to this decision. The match was concluded by a strike by Ashby once again, sending the ball between the goalie’s legs.

The trip was worth it after all. The win sees us drawn against Letchworth once more at home on Sunday 22nd November.

A special mention must go out firstly, to Tarin Chana, who volunteered for the trip last minute, but an even bigger mention to Andy Mendl and Andrei Mendis, who travelled from home to Totnes, on the morning of the game, getting up in the early hours to drive down. With this commitment from players, we can push become a club that can be noticed.

TEAM: Lee Cook, Rob Porter, David Pyke, Andrew Mendl, Jamie Perfitt, Yazu "Data", Kevin King, Andrew Horsman, Dan Lucas, David Humber; Mark Ashby, Tarin Chana, Andrei Mendis

3rd XI 1 - 0 Tunbridge Wells 3rd XI (H)

The wait is over! BBHC Men’s 3’s got the first league win they have deserved at fifth time of asking and kept a clean sheet to boot.

Fellow-strugglers Tunbridge Wells 3’s were the victims and they visited Erith School with the mental advantage thanks to a 3-0 win in pre-season at Hawkenbury Road. It was a game where BBHC ran the show but were hit by 3 sucker punches on the break. The pattern of the game was similar this time but a tightened BBHC defence was the big difference.

BBHC played some great hockey according to club President Ron Patrick from the sidelines and Wells barely made it into the home D in the first half. By contrast, BBHC fashioned plenty of chances through all channels but continued their trend of failing to convert. 0-0 at half time was a great platform to build on.

The second half began in a similar vein but the hockey slowly became more stretched as tiredness set in for both and either sides more desperate to score. Wells won 3 short corners as a result of this but the danger was easily dealt with.

BBHC’s own short corner count approached double figures with no end-product and frustration threatened. Further open play chances were fashioned by Tarin Chana but his team mates spurned the opportunities. Peter McArdle, in particular, was guilty of a number of these, perhaps over-elaborating when his strength could have been better used to create space for himself for a quick shot on the strong side. With 8 minutes remaining, McArdle redeemed himself during some more BBHC pressure in the D, tapping the ball home to ease BBHC nerves.

A 1-0 win and a corner turned! And it was notable that youngsters Blake Bartholomew, Karan Chana, Tarin Chana, Rohan Chana, Harpal Kalsi and Sumeet Dhinsa demonstrated their development with some assured performances. Kalsi and Dhinsa were calm under pressure, the Chanas were industrious, and Bartholomew covered most of the pitch with his boundless energy.

TEAM: Danny Major, Sumeet Dhinsa, Andrei Mendis, Harpal Kalsi, Paul Harvey, Tarin Chana, Danny Eyre, Ian Cole, Matt Thurlow, Jon White, Peter McArdle, Blake Bartholomew, Manaran Chana, Rohan Chana

Next week the lads face Holcombe 4th XI for a 13:30 pushback at Holcombe Park.

[Andrei Mendis]

4th XI 1 - 2 Marden Russets 3rd XI (A)
The 4’s travelled to Marden Russets for an early game this week in a close, competitive match. The game started promisingly with constant attack through Martin Hickman and James Smith. This culminated in a number of consecutive short corners which were well dealt with by the Marden keeper. However, this could not continue forever and, after a passage of pressure, a free hit outside the 25 yard line was struck in by John Gibbard and converted neatly by Andy "Goals" Galbraith.

The second half was another game as a strong Marden team attacked again and again and the BB team was struggling with no substitutions. A lot of short corners were conceded and eventually one crept in. A good defensive presence kept the pressure down but we could not prevail as, two minutes from time, another short corner deflected off the logged GK James Isteed’s foot and snuck into the bottom corner.

Overall, a disappointing result and we all feel that we will give them a good game at Erith later in the season.

MoM - Jas Phull for a fantastic performance with no support.
DoD - Simon Brown for generally being Simon.

[James Isteed]

5th XI 5 - 0 Gravesham 2nd XI (H)
As your reporter had had to previously cancel the 6s match due to half term resulting in too many adults having to go on holiday thus decimating his team, the opportunity of a guest appearance for the 5s for those of his team not so fortunate was not to be missed.

Two minutes into the match the regular 5s players might have thought otherwise as a badly struck 16yd hit (13.4 metres?) went straight to the visitor’s strike force who gratefully accepted the gift. Score - 1-0.

Within 5 minutes, and hardly having made any progress into their opponents half, BBHC found themselves two down, whereupon it was decided to increase the back 3 by one to attempt to counteract the marauding forwards. Stability returned and we started to exert pressure of our own, winning several short corners and forcing the visiting keeper into some good saves. However, half time arrived too late to prevent a third goal being conceded, a mis-struck cross that, appropriately enough for Hallowe’en, magically spun and evaded both the aforementioned guest defender and the keeper.

Making good use of substitutes, further changes were made at half time, (guest defender replaced for 25 minutes!), and a more even match ensued in the second half. However, with the home side pushing to recover ground, it was seemingly inevitable that Gravesham would break and score again, which they did twice. Several good chances were created by the home side including one strike from Dave Corker that was deflected over the keeper by a defender only to land on the cross bar and go behind.

Thanks to Matt Thurlow for umpiring.

Final score: BBHC 5th XI 0 Gravesham 2s 5

BBHC travelled to Holcombe Hockey Club for a much anticipated league encounter, befitting two teams with strong ambitions to progress for honours in the Kent/Sussex Regional Division.

Visitors BBHC made the stronger start, as Jamie Perfitt combined well with Dave Humber to force a smart save out of the keeper. Dan Lucas was also denied a goal with his shot blazing millimetres wide of Holcombe’s goal. It was BB’s Goal keeper, Lee Cook, who was left to thwart the Holcombe attacks as the home start started to exert extended pressure on the BB defence. Half time saw the scores level at 0-0 and all to play for in the second half.

With the second half 10 minutes old, BB found themselves 1-0 courtesy of James Baldwin’s deflected shot. This should have been the start of things to come as BBHC looked to build on their lead, however it was Holcombe who stepped up a gear and equalised within 5 minutes scoring from a drag flick at a penalty corner. The visitor’s cause was not helped when Neil Barr was harshly sent off with a yellow card. This gave Holcombe the extra impetus they needed and some what fortuitously they grabbed the winner following an attacking foray into the BB circle.

BBHC struggled to find the equaliser, and Holcombe buoyed by their home support, ran the clock down to record a 2-1 win. On reflection BB felt they deserved much more from a game that they controlled for the majority. Special mention goes to the midfield trio of Ashenden, Horsman and Baldwin all of whom had good games.

Next week sees BB entertain Brighton at home, with a road trip to Dart (Devon) for the next round of the HA Trophy.

2nd XI 1 - 5 Maidstone 2nd XI (H)
The less said about the performance of the 2nd XI vs visiting Maidstone the better. A muddled first 20 minutes saw BBHC 4-0 down, but slowly as the half came to a close BBHC began to string some passes together. A couple of short corners led to nothing but eventually Mark Ashby powered a shot home from open play.

The second half was a more even affair with BBHC defending well as a unit but going forward it looked disjointed. Maidstone managed to grab a goal through a short corner and were more than worthy of their 5- 1 victory.

Next week, BBHC visit HSBC with an improved performance much needed!

A very early start for us, and after having a slip date last week, it took us some time to adjust to the weather and pitch. The first half was an end to end affair with New Becks able to convert a short corner and score a very soft goal.

Unfortunately in the second half BBHC couldn't convert any chances to enable the score line to reflect the effort and level of hockey being played! Everybody played well especially Emma (on her debut for a Senior team), and Ang (definitely NOT on her debut)!

Yet another slip date next week, then Dartford Ladies on 7th November.

This weekend BBHC entertained Crawley at home. With BB looking for their first league win, the team was fired up for the game. BB started very well putting Crawley under a lot of pressure and controlling the game from the beginning. After some good passing and great movement from the BB midfielders and forwards, Dave Humber found a gap in the Crawley defence after picking the ball up on the edge of the D and turning well he slotted the ball under the Crawley keeper. With one in the bag BB didnt waste time and carried on exerting the pressure. It wasnt long until a big space on the left allowed BB’s new star player “Data" to make a 50 yard run from left back to pick the ball up in the D and fire a powerful reverse strike into the Crawley goal securing his third goal this season for BBHC from left back.

Crawley’s only real opportunity in the game came just before half time when “Lego head" Ben Bradley did not fail to disappoint and managed to pull of his usual “once a game stunt" passing the ball straight into the path of the opposition’s centre forward. From the resulting short corner, Crawley’s centre back stepped up with a powerful drag flick heading straight for the bottom left corner. This however was not good enough to beat the Cookie monster as he pulled of a great save. At half time BB got a positive team talk from their captain Kevin King reminding them of the previous weeks 2-2 draw. Spurred on by this, BB came out in the second half keen to come take further control of the game with more goals and a convincing display, to which they didn’t dissapoint. After a few short corners and some great open play chances a short corner saw Kevin King sliding in and deflecting the ball past the planted keeper, this goal got the ball rolling again and shortly after BB were denied a definite penalty stroke.

With BB wasting a few open play opportunities everybody looked to the next short corner to produce another goal and it did as BB went 4-0 up with Samash putting his flick in the top right corner of the goal. 5 minutes before the full time whistle Kevin King made it 5 with a great individual effort running the ball into the D and rocketing the ball past the defenders heads and into the goal off the cross bar.

With the full time whistle going and the end of a very good performance, BB ran out worthy winners which surely brings confidence for a tough game next weekend against Holcombe.

2nd XI 3 - 2 University of Kent 1st XI (A)
With a solid defensive performance last week against Canterbury, BBHC 2nd XI were hoping to build upon this foundation whilst playing a more attacking style of hockey. With availability finally improving and the return of Mark Ashby, Sukh Chagger and Andy Tither the team were optimistic.

The students came right zooming out of the starting blocks with solo run from the centre, however, after a shaky few moments BBHC soon began to find their shape and taking the game back to Uni of Kent.

Five minutes in BBHC grabbed the lead after a run round the back from Andy Tither saw him set up Allan Sains for an easy tap in. The students heads did not go down and continued to play good hockey, and the BBHC back 4 rode their luck on occasions being saved by Steve Porter in goal. BBHC continued to make chances of their own and managed to extend the lead when Mark Ashby converted from a short corner. Mis-directing the keeper with his eyes he sent the ball bottom left . The students kept probing BBHC with a mixture of long balls and aerials but BBHC stood strong until half time.

The second half saw BBHC dominate from the push back for a solid 15 minutes moving the ball around well found the pacey Andy Titther frequently with way too much space for the Student's liking, BBHC utilised this attacking option and were able to make the scores 3-0 after a run from Andy Tither saw a weighted ball into the centre finished off by Allan Sains on his reverse. 3-0 and BBHC were cruising. However, Uni of Kent's attacking prowess never disappeared and when BBHC hit the self destruct button, they were quick to pounce.

A short corner was well finished on the reverse at Steve Porter's near post. However, without the reactions of Steve Porter in goal the Students would have been level. As the half drew to a close, the hockey increasingly became scrappier and more desperate. Uni of Kent grabbed another (via a foot??) with 5 minutes to go but some no nonsense tackling meant BBHC managed to hold on to the end of a game for their first 3 points of the season.

3rd XI 2 - 3 Wellcome 1st (H)
The Men's 3's started slow, yet again. Confusion with the formation led to poor marking on the left and Wellcome converted from an easy stroll down their right wing. BBHC keeper Danny was unsighted as the tight-angle shot squeezed in under his body. A further 10 minutes of uncertainty ensued but the home team got their heads together and turned things around. Some fluent play going forward bred confidence saw Tarin Chana deflect a firm hit into the D. The far more experienced Wellcome side were still dangerous during their own possession but GK Danny Major has proved to be a more-than-capable custodian. His positioning and decision-making saw him do his job whilst his team-mates seemed uncertain at times in defence. Thankfully, the half eventually ended 1-1.

The second half began true to form! A swift Wellcome attack down the BBHC left saw an arrow-like cross fired to the un-marked Will Jewiss to deflect like a rocket high inside the near post. Poor concentration and marking undid the 3's again. However, BBHC steadied themselves and reasserted themselves. BBHC short corners were won - 4 in succession at one point - but an unpolished set of routines saw only 1 show any real promise. Wellcome had far fewer but converted one with 15 minutes to go thanks to a strike from the top of the D, 3-1 to the visitors.

A convincing loss was on the cards but BBHC pulled one back thanks to some smart team work - some play that the home side have only been able to show in short periods. Blake Bartholomew - a sporadic performer throughout the match - won a lost cause once more on the left wing near the half way line and moved it to Danny Eyre in centre midfield. Karan Chana recieved it next and drove into the D. A scramble for possession saw the ball fall to the experienced Peter McArdle, who seemed to take a shot on his reverse. That he did, surprising the Wellcome keeper with it's speed of execution and the ball found the roof of the net for a deserved consolation goal.

Final score 3-2. The results are getting better and goals are being scored, but BBHC continue to concede space and possession through the middle, leaving them vulnerable more often than desired. Individual performances have fitfully woven together into some impressive attacking and defensive moves but more is needed. Danny in goal has provided a sure base, and Tarin Chana has been dangerous down the right wing. However, Sumeet Dhinsa was the stand-out performer today - his assuredness in possession was particularly impressive.

Next week, 11:30pm PB at Alleyn's School, Dulwich, to play King's Alleyn's 3rd XI.

4th XI 1 - 1 Sutton Valence 3rd XI (A)
BBHC visited Sutton Valence for a 10am (!) push back with high hopes of grabbing three more points after a good result last week.

S.V started off the stronger with good basics through out the team saw them move the ball round, however, the experienced back line including John Gibbard and Simon Brown limited the shots on target to a minimum.

BBHC defended well but looked less confident going forward. Despite S.Vs dominance in possession both teams went in with the scores at 0-0.

As the second half started, it looked as if S.V had a serious team talk at half time. Their hockey was more direct and after several good attempts were saved by James Isteed in goal, they finally broke the deadlock with a cross being swept into the far post from 5 yards. BBHC showed their spirit though and continued to push forward with some good attacks down the right from Andy Gailbraith. Midway through the half, BBHC finally won their first short corner. The routine didn't quite go to plan but the ball finally made it's way to Rajan Sehra on the back post whom was only denied by the defender's knee on the line. The resultant penalty stroke though was save by the S.V keeper from captain James Smith,

BBHC did not let their heads drop though and eventually the tireless running from Andy Humber upfront paid off, the initial shot was deflected into the keeper's chest but he was quickest to react slotting the ball through the keeper's legs on his reverse. With the scores at 1-1 BBHC fought to the last to preserve the well earned draw.

6th XI 0 - 6 Holcombe 6th XI (A)
The day started well with all the players who were due to meet at the club doing so, on time. We arrived at Holcombe Park and 15 minutes before the match was due to start we actually had 11 players. Things were looking good!

We knew that against an experienced (synonym for mainly veteran) side we were going to have our work cut out, but for the first 15 minutes we held our own and even forced a couple of short corners. However, a quick break by the home side saw them score their first goal, followed shortly after by a second from a short corner.

Whilst Patrice Kay and Lawrence White worked tirelessly up front, against a well drilled Holcombe defence they were only occasionally able to hold the ball up long enough for the midfield to support and create chances on goal, one such occasion resulting in a fine point blank save by the home keeper.

The only other notable, nay, laughable, moment of the first half was the visiting keeper failing twice within 5 seconds to kick the ball clear of his D when under no pressure, resulting in him seemingly auditioning for Swan Lake rather than a role in Dodge Ball.

Before half-time the home side scored twice more, but not to be discouraged, we adjusted the midfield for the second half, and whilst this meant we were playing deeper, for 20 minutes there were no discernable attempts on the visitors goal, and the home side became increasingly frustrated. However, the inevitable happens, and after a series of short corners a fifth goal was conceded and as Holcombe pushed on with their regained confidence, their young right winger came across the man mountain that is Francis. Sticks and voices were raised and Francis found himself on the floor and was awarded a 5.5 for style and performance in the dive. The game re-started and with the final play of the game a sixth goal conceded.

Many positives came from the match - a full side, periods of great defending and five of the team outlasting the home side in Holcombe’s bar! Thanks are also to our Luton import for coming to visit and putting in some hard graft in the midfield.

Final score: Holcombe 6s 6 BBHC 6th XI 0

1st XI 2 - 2 Marden Russets 1st XI (H)
Following on from a deserved point from their opening match of the season, you could forgive BBHC from experiencing a case of déjà vu. A 2-0 lead, inside the second half and the first 3 points of the season seemed destined to be but a draw was the outcome.

There is a history between the two teams and no one was under any illusion that this would not be a test for BBHC. A team missing a few players needed to show solidarity and teamwork to overcome a strong and 'competitive’ Marden Russets side.

The early exchanges were full of energy and probing with both sides fighting for dominance. A side-splitting (comedy? [Ed] ) pass from Andrew 'Horse’ Horsman sent David 'Dazie’ Humber through on goal where a crisp strike into the bottom corner would have been a better shot selection, rather than a flick which the MR goalkeeper dealt with. Marden Russets seemed to have difficulty with the new rules and BBHC exploited this weakness on a number of occasions. A quick interception from the enforcer James Baldwin saw him with a one-on-one with the MR goalkeeper. Alas some indecision saw his slapped shot saved and go out for a long corner. A break through was needed.

After a starring performance in the opening match of the season, BBHC’s man of the moment Data duly delivered. A short corner broke down and the ball broke to our stopper who dispatched a rather tame shot, which caught the MR defence on the back foot. Home debut goal for the foreign import put BBHC on their way.

However, with the first half drawing to a close. MR mount a drive down their right and our hero becomes the villain (in the eyes of the umpire) and is yellow carded for a deliberate foul on the edge of the D. The MR player has to leave the pitch suffering from a wounded shoulder. BBHC protest and feel hard done by. The resulting short corner needs the Lee 'Cookie Monster’ Cook to do what he does best and the danger is squashed.

HALF TIME: 1-0 TO BBHC

The second half begins with BBHC down to 10 men and MR very much 'up for it’. Some interesting interpretations of the rules by the umpires and players mean both teams sense an opportunity for victory. No one can rest on their laurels. The teams are soon back to equal numbers (even after a sly attempt by Data to rejoin the match before the umpire waved him back on!) An attack down the right flank from Jamie Perfitt had the MR defence back-tracking. A swift low ball from the by-line bounced around and fell to that man again, Dazie, who made up for his earlier disappointment with a cool finish. 2-0 to the BB’s. Even at this stage the result was by no means certain.

As the second half approached its conclusion the tide changed. A debatable decision, involving the new 5 metre ball travelling outside the D, lead to a clinical finish from the MR centre forward. MR’s tails were up. As the final minutes ticked away, a loss in concentration led to a weak pass between BBHC’s defence and midfield. MR intercepted, again fed their centre forward who finished the move off with a reverse shot leaving Cookie with no chance.

Attacks into the BBHC D kept the defence on their toes with Ben 'Lego Head’ Bradley putting in a Jonty of the Match performance. Passion played its part and a green card was shown to David Pyke. A win must be on the horizon.

We are home next week to Crawley.

[Andrew 'Horse/Ass’ Horsman]

2nd XI 0 - 0 Canterbury 4th XI (A)
Having started the 2009/10 league campaign with a disappointing performance against local rivals Burnt Ash and shipping 7 goals to boot, BBHC 2nd XI were looking to secure their first points with an away trip to Canterbury.

A new look 2nd XI stepped out onto the Canterbury water-based pitch, with the team welcoming Phil Williams for his debut and Kevin Wrake, Alex Webster and Lee Humber back into the fold. With six recognised defender in the starting line up, BBHC were hoping that the defensive issues of the previous week would not be an issue. However, the young Canterbury side caught BBHC on the back step winning a short corner within the first minute. Having successfully repelled this early attack, BBHC soon began to grow in confidence with simple hockey moving the ball around well. Despite the lack of attacking minded players in the team Allan Sains and Phil Williams movement up front with the support of the midfield caused Canterbury issues. Short corners came and went for BBHC but everything that was thrown at the Canterbury keeper he was equal to, pulling off some stunning saves from Allan Sains drag flicks.

Canterbury did pose an attacking threat themselves throughout the half but some tough tackling from the back, combined with the constant hassling back by the BBHC midfield meant that goal opportunities were few and far between. However, when they did break through keeper Steve Porter was well positioned to make the save.

With the scores all even at half time, both teams came out hoping to grab the elusive first goal. Both teams played good hockey moving the ball about well but it was still the defenders who were coming out on top in this battle. As the half progressed, Canterbury's extra subs began to show, as BBHC began to tire. Canterbury missed a golden opportunity to snatch the lead after a break down the BBHC left saw the Cants wingers in a one on one with Steve Porter in goal. Quickly of his line Steve was able to take the ball (and player) allowing Adrian Prong to mop up. BBHC had a chance of there own to snatch the lead after a long ball from Allan Sains left Phil Williams with a one on one of his own. He was also unable to find the net.

As the game came to a close, Canterbury made a final grab for victory with a final few attacks but some last ditch tackles meant that BBHC held out for a well deserved point.

M.O.M - Steve Porter - Great saves at key times
D.O.D - Andy Franklin - Doing a little too much for inter-club relations

6th XI 0 - 6 Wellcome Unicorns (H)
We started with only nine men against a Wellcome Unicorns team full of familiar faces. Inevitably, being two men short mean we were being caught on the break. We played 3-3-2 in an attempt to make a game of it, adding a third up front in the second half when we dragged a spectator on. Notable performances from Francis Saldanha in his first match back from 18 months out injured and from Lee Collins in goal despite pulling a muscle early in the game.

Unicorns had a young right winger who caused lots of problems, hopefully he will have been promoted a side or two by the time of the rematch.

4 - nil down at half time, we gelled better in the second half and Unicorns were perhaps lucky to score a further two.

Final score: BBHC 0 Wellcome Unicorns 6

Well dear reader, this was phenomenal result for us as Greenwich Poly are the team we either win big time or spectacularly lose, too!

So some fabulous hockey was played, especially by Ruth and Lou who were fighting illnesses. Katrina had some shots on goal and is starting to fit into her new role as striker! There were some scary moments as the Poly pushed for the win, but on the whole BBHC had more of the game. and really deserved to win.

Well done girls, shame we now have a slip date next week! Roll on New Becc's on the 24th, bet we get lost on the way!

1st XI 2 - 2 Horsham 1st XI (A)
With the sun shining on a gorgeous sunny day for the beginning of another season for the 1st team. BBHC travelled away to Horsham, for their traditional grudge match to kick off the season.

The anticipation and excitement on the trip down to Sussex was extended straight onto the pitch with BB starting strongly, pinning Horsham into their own half for most of the opening 15minutes. Unfortunately some great flowing moves were not capped off with a goal deserved for the opening pressure exhibited.

Horsham soaked up the pressure well and countered on the break. With a long ball passed through to their centre forward who controlled the ball well with his stick and controlled Lego head Ben even better with his elbows leaving him laid out on the floor. However he was no match for Lee Cook who returned the favour. The BB pressure was at last rewarded with a short corner. Horsham were unable to clear their D. A sweet strike from David Pyke was never in doubt and he turned to celebrate as it left his stick. BB continued their good pressure but their lack of a final touch was punished after half an hour with Horsham breaking with numbers over running the midfield, but only managing to secure a corner. The whole team watched in slow motion horror as the ball struck the top of Lego head Ben’s stick and looped into the top corner of the net. As the half time break loomed another Horsham break was expertly broken down by the defence and BB broke back at them. Lego head Ben saw a great pass up to the forwards, unfortunately his passing wasnt as good as his plans, and the ball only got as far as their centre forward who combined well with his team mate to one, two the ball past the helpless Cookie in goal. BB went into the half time break 2-1 down.

The second half began with BB’s esteemed captain Kevin King limping off with a bad injury and worries for the upcoming weeks games. Being 2-1 down BB knew they needed to get an early equalizer but found themselves at the wrong end with Horsham this time dominating both the state of play and Lego head Ben. It was looking bleak until up stepped “Data", BBs new Japanese signing into sweeper. Nothing Horsham did could overcome the defence with Data popping up to thwart them all over the pitch. This geared up the team and the game slowly turned back into BB’s favour. Some great work by David yike, Sam Ash and James Badwin continued the pressure which eventually earnt a corner. A slick move finished off clinically by Neil Barr. The last ten minutes saw BB continue continue to press for the winner. Some fantastic efforts where again missing the final touch. In the closing minutes of the game a head high cross into the D was expertly deflected at goal by James Badwin, which had it have been scored, could have easily been an early contender for goal of the season. The game finished 2 -2, a pretty fair result on reflection and a good fight back.

The positive news of BB’s new emerging sweeper (Data), was somewhat soured with the sight of captain and mentor, Kevin King limping off into the changing rooms. We are at home next week to Marden Russetts.

3rd XI 1 - 4 Sevenoaks 4A's (H)
With the pre-season friendlies over, the weather took a slight turn to comfortably cooler temperatures for hockey as the Men's leagues got underway. BBHC Men's 3rd XI faced the experienced Sevenoaks 4As side. Though not a patch on the Canterbury Millers team of 2 weeks before, they proved to be tough competition.

The visitors had the best of the opening 5 minutes but as BBHC began to find their rhythm, Oaks won 2 short corners/ The first was struck low to the right hand corner of the goal but was stopped ahead of the line and cleared by Andrei Mendis. However, the second struck keeper Danny Major as he saved comfortably diving to his left but his defence were static as the rebound was clipped over the grounded net guardian.

A second goal was added late in the 1st half as an Oaks attacker shaped to strike the ball on his reverse from the top of the D but left it to his advancing left back. The strike was true and through a crowd of players, sneaking in at Major's right post. 2-0 at half time and BBHC had their work cut-out for them.

A positive BBHC start to the second half was consolidated by a goal. Play was switched from the inside left channel across to Tarin Chana and Karan Chana, who worked the ball in from the right. A sharp cut-back to Jon White saw him beat the keeper and shoot high into the middle of the goal where an Oaks defender had retreated to and was unable to avoid the ball. A penalty flick was awarded and captain Paul Harvey coolly converted.

Then followed a 10 minute period of BBHC dominance but nothing was to come of it. Stamina and fit substitutes were lacking and sloppy passing from the home defence was punished with an Oaks tap-in. A later Sevenoaks counterattack saw their midfielder clip a shot over the onrushing Danny into the net to round of the victory.

On the whole, BBHC look to be moving in the right direction with the style of play and formation. However fitness needs to be improved along with the conversion of chances. In the short term, concentration whilst defending remains key in order to minimise goals conceded and to keep us in the game.

Next week, Ashford 4th XI (A).

TEAM: Danny Major; Sumeet Dhinsa; Adrian Prong; Andrei Mendis; Tarin Chana; Mankaran Chana; Paul Harvey (c); Matt Thurlow; Danny Eyre; Blake Bartholomew; Jon White, Peter McArdle.

GOAL: Paul Harvey [PS]
MoM: Blake Bartholomew
DoD: Paul Harvey (brought a bag of Primary School books instead of a bag of practice balls for the warm-up!).

Once again the fearless few committed themselves to the game against Burnt Ash. On a very Autumnal morning ten ladies played great hockey against a determined Ash side. Early goals gave us issues ( too many of them- too few of us), but we absorbed the pressure as best we could. Every player gave 100% (note to Simon Cowell 100% is all you can give) and a fine performance was had by all. Basically the score didn't reflect the effort given. Oh well, bring on Greenwich Polygons next week!

U14 Boys 0 - 4 Tunbridge Wells (A)
BBHC's U14 Boys were hosted by Tunbridge Wells at the impressive Tonbridge School facilities for their first league game on a bright day. With a number of new and highly inexperienced 11 year old recruits in the team, BBHC also fielded over-age players Ben Nowell, Rohan Chana and Tarin Chana, with the blessing of the other league managers.

T.Wells started the better and scored after 5 minutes with a well struck shot at GK Patrice Kay's right post. BBHC woke up after that surprise and were able to hold possession well and create their own chances. Both Chanas dominated possession and tried to bring their team mates into the game. The remainder of the half was fairly even and the score remained 1-0.

The 2nd half got underway in the same manner as the 1st ended but BBHC's resolve broke 10 minutes in as they conceded a 2nd, and the tide of the game went largely to T Wells. They were able to crowd the Chana boys out as they held onto the ball for too long, despite the occasional mazy run forward that did breach the home defences. However, not enough was done to bring their team mates into the game and T Wells were able to add 2 more to make it a final score of 4-0. Lucien May had a brief injury scare as he inadvertently blocked a raised Rohan Chana shot.

Debutants today were Gagen Singh, Joseph Hoyne and Arjan Phull, whilst Matt Williams made the full step up from the U12s this year. Hoyne and Phull looked very much at home with the pace and length of the game, whilst Williams showed some promising skills when he was occasionally utilised in the acres of space he had on the left. Promising signs for future matches.

What a difference a week makes - 12 players and an umpire this week. (It would have been 13 players but apparently a path needed some cement mixing, but it was ok, this was completed in time for the 4s game!)

Back to Polo Farm though, and if Man Utd score in time added on at the end of matches, then the hosts scored in time prefaced at the start of this game - short corner, shot diverted into the goal by a defender, 1 - 0.

Undeterred, and now up to full strength after players turned up late following haircut appointments and getting lost in the town centre, BBHC began to push their marginally older opposition back.

Several good moves down the wings by Ben Nowell, Lawrence White and Phil Williams, with support from new midfielders Gurdip and Bhupinder, came to nothing and the home side were able to extend their lead before half time.

The second half saw a rejuvenated BBHC pushing forwards and earning a succession of short corners, with one finally resulting in a goal after the initial shot was saved by the keeper only for the ball to find its way back to Sammy Chana to slot the ball home. Further pressure failed to produce an equalising goal and once again the Friars were able to make experience tell as after a number of good saves they scored waht proved to be the telling goal.

This side is slowly taking shape, and with a gap in the fixture card (at the moment) next week, is looking forward to the league program starting against Wellcome on the 10th.

Thanks to all, and to Francis for umpiring.

Final score: Canterbury Friars 3 BBHC 1

Well we played some great hockey but Blackheath scored two more goals than us! Oh more detailed required? Oh ok then...

BBHC started the game really defending well, considering we had ten players. (Kim was hot footing it from coaching the 1st team). It wasn't until at least 20 minutes into the first half that Blackheath scored from a short corner. To be fair it was a blinding shot!

It finished one nil a half time, and we were determined to push for the equiliser and maybe even the winner!

Some cracking hockey happened in the second half- to be honest it was a case of great passing and tackling with some disgruntled Blackheath players coming off the worse.

Kim Selby converted a short corner to keep us in the game. But fatigue, the sun, old age, players doubling up, all took it's toll, and Blackheath scored twice more (the final one was suspect)from short corners.

Burnt Ash next week!

(Starting my 23rd season at the club I now know how difficult it is to get a full side out for a game). My thanks to the 2nd and 5th XI players, who made up the numbers particularly those who undertook umpiring duties along with Mark Bettany.

Starting strongly, the visitors soon had their hosts on the back foot and would have gone ahead earlier but for some excellent goalkeeping. However, about 10 minutes in the home keeper was beaten only for a defender to stop the ball with a foot before it entered the goal. As the big guns from the 2nd XI queued up to take the awarded penalty stroke the captain trotted up from the back and pulled rank, confidently scoring the team’s first goal of the season.

The lead was soon doubled as Andy Franklin finally found the net, the ball just making it across the line, the same player having earlier failed to lob the diminutive keeper. This spurred the home side into action with a quick break that caught the otherwise unoccupied BBHC defence by surprise with a crisp shot passed a stranded James Breaker in goal. A short spell of pressure was then endured before a third goal for the visitors, scored by Jaz, took the match to half time with the score at 3-1.

The lead was further extended early in the second half, Amandeep scoring the first of his two well taken goals, in between which OBs had a spell where they scored twice and BBHC scored a fifth through Allan Sains.

Tireless work down the right from Rohan Chana, working with and feeding off Allan and Andy with good midfield work and solo runs from Porno and Sammy, all supporting Jonathan Rookes, Dave King and Clayton Littel at the back meant a successful start to the season.

Final score: Old Bordenians 3 BBHC 6

Next week: Canterbury Vintage XI away.

Men's Reports

3rd XI 0 - 3 Tunbridge Wells 3rd XI (A) - Friendly
The summer draws to a close and the hockey season is with us once more.

The weather for Saturday's 1st autumn friendly wasn't very conducive to playing for 3rd XI personnel - blue skies, sunny and a Celsius temperature in the 20s. A BBHC 3rd XI fielding a considerably younger side than had finished last season felt the heat first. The first 5 minutes were all T. Wells' - BBHC were stalling in an unfamiliar formation and the summer's cobwebs evident.

However, the boys stuck to the task and the tide turned for the remainder of the half. The BBHC tackling was sharp, and the passing and movement without excessive sprinting, were a joy to watch. The more experienced home side then rarely entered the BBHC 25' and repeatedly conceded possession cheaply.

The visitors' confidence increased as the half progressed The best example of this was the performance of Tarin Chana - nervous in the opening exchanges and perhaps thinking back to his unhappy games at the start of the last 3rd XI campaign. Taking on advice and encouragement from his older team mates, his self-belief grew and he was soon taking on his markers with speed and guile. He created numerous chances and won most of BBHC's short corners.

In fact, BBHC created so many chances, it was frustrating that none could be converted. Meanwhile, the older heads of T. Wells kept their's and finally produced a counterattack. And with their first shot on target, they scored and I am surprised to find myself using the phrase "against the run-of-play" so early in the season and in reference to our opposition!

It was a hammer blow before half-time, but Paul Harvey gee'd the boys up at the break. And the 2nd half began positively, with the only thing weighing them down being the exhaustion brought on by a summer of little exertion. T. Wells, on the other hand, had reorganised and the 2nd half was a far more even affair in terms of possession.

The minds were willing but some bodies were not. - Sammy Chana, Andrei Mendis, Matt Thurlow and Jon White were soon running low on stamina and mistakes were made. Your author today, in particular, leaving the home team forwards 2 virtually open goals to score.

Thankfully, BBHC were not too disappointed. The performance here was everything and we rarely reached these heights in the first half of the 2008/09 hockey season. All the youngsters played well today and Tarin Chana was the most improved. However he was eclipsed by his cousin - Karan. His tireless running, tackling and passing kept the team ticking over. Overall, it was very promising for the games ahead.

Many thanks to T. Wells for supplying both umpires. The game was umpired and played in the true spirit of hockey.

TEAM: Martin Mason, Sumeet Dhinsa, David Mason, Andrei Mendis, Tarin Chana, Mankaran Chana, Paul Harvey, Matt Thurlow, Jon White, Sammy Chana, Rohan Chana.
