1st XI 3-1 Sutton Valence 1st XI - Kent Plate Final (at Canterbury
HC)
BBHC's Men's 1st team looked to make up for a difficult league season
by winning the Kent plate final played down at Canterbury on a sunny
Sunday.
BBHC started out strong, moving the ball round the back patiently, gently probing the Sutton Valance defence. The majority of possession for the first 15 minutes belonged to BBHC but this was converted into few meaningful chances with the S.V defence standing strong. However, the constant probing eventually paid off after a well struck in ball, was expertly deflected home, mid-dive by Jamie Perfitt.
This goal spurred S.V into life and they put BBHC under a period of pressure, but the defence were playing well and Steve Porter in goal was rarely called into action. S.V managed to win a short corner, which was well converted with a drag flick to the bottom right hand corner. With the scores level, the game opened out and BBHC created many more chances. Phil Price was close but sent the ball flying over the bar. Dave Humber managed to lob the keeper from an acute angle and with the ball bouncing tantalisingly on the line Jamie Perfitt just missing the half volley.
The teams came out for the second half with the scores all even and both teams believing a win was in their grasp. BBHC continued to be the dominant side and soon took the lead after a 1 on 1 for Jamie Perfitt saw the ball rebound back kindly after an initial save from the keeper to be converted into the empty net.
S.V bounced back as they had done previously winning several short corners and blasting a shot over the bar but were still struggling to test the keeper.BBHC found themselves a man down after James Baldwin was yellow carded for a strong tackle but it was not long until S.V also lost a man for a similar offence. BBHC sealed their victory after some good solo work from Andres Labourt drew the keeper and simple square pass left Dan Lucas with an easy tap in.
Final score 3 – 1 to BBHC.

BBHC waited until relegation was confirmed until they finally pulled
put in a display worth of the team fielded. Cliftonville, one place
above BBHC, visited on Saturday the 5th.
In a generally friendly match BBHC took the lead 5 minutes in when Steve Neville's well placed shot dribbled over the line. From then on there was no looking back and BBHC found themselves four up at half time. Two strikes from Dave Humber, worthy of Papa Humber and a fantastically worked move deflected home by John light .
Cliftonville started the second half well and after catching the BBHC defence napping grabbed a goal after a topped shot was tapped in at the far post, ruining Jim Jackson's hope of securing his first clean sheet of the season. BBHC responded well with further goals from Alan Sains, another for John Light and one for John White. The half was slightly marred by a red card for Matt Thurlow who gave the umpire some choice words.
A fantastic way to finish off a disappointing season.

1st XI 5 - 4 Trojans 1st XI (H)
BBHC Men's first team entertained Trojans for their last game of the
season this Saturday.
BBHC were caught napping as Trojans slotted an easy chance home within the first minute of the game but fought back strongly and drew level after 10 minutes when a great move down the left resulted in Sam Ashenden flicking the ball into an empty net.
Two sloppy pieces of marking allowed Trojans to get the upper hand as they converted two easy chances to take the score to 3:1.
Again BBHC fought back and with Trojans conceding a penalty flick when Kevin King deflected a short corner into a Trojans defender on the line, David Pyke stepped up and coolly flicked the ball past the Trojans keeper. With the half coming to an end Marvin Kennedy lobbed the Trojans keeper to make the interval score 3:3.
Trojans discipline in the second half was poor and they received yellow cards for back-chat to the strict umpires. BBHC capitalised on the numerical advantage and Kennedy got his brace from a well worked one-two from a short corner, which he flicked past the keeper.
Phil Price got BBHC's fifth when he turned the last Trojans defender to go one on one with the keeper and after showing him a dummy, slotted the ball into the net. Trojans scrambled a goal back which gave BBHC an uncomfortable last 10 minutes but they held out for the 5:4 win.

3rd XI 2 - 4 University of Kent 1st XI (H)
The penultamate game of the season for the 3rd XI saw the young Uni
of kent side visit in some extreme weather conditions. All players
were soaked to the skin by rain then frozen to the bone by the wind
half-time! Roll on British Summertime!
Uni of Kent started off strong and after a mistake by Alex Webster on the left hand side found themselves in the lead after 2 minutes. The ball was cut back from the byline and calmly converted on the reverse side, high into the net. BBHC played some good hockey through the first half, but where unable to convert due to some good keeping from the opposition keeper. However, with Uni of Kent's midfield so quick to support their attack, BBHC conceded a further 3 goals throughout the half with the BBHC defence finding themselves out-numbered on several occassions.
The second half saw a much better performance from the team, despite at times having to ride theri luck defensively. BBHC managed to grab two goals back through Alan Sains, both converted from close range leaving the on form opposition keeper with no chance . BB C won several more short corners but, despite the good execution, they were equalled by the Kent keeper.
Final score 2-4. Cliftonviille visit next week, with last place assured BBHC..

1st XI 2 - 9 Epsom (A)
BBHC Mens first team were away at Epsom this Saturday. The game was affected
by the demonstrations in London which, even though the start was delayed, it
caused 3 players to turn up as the game was starting.
This was not the best preparation for BBHC who found themselves a goal down within the first five minutes with a simple move ending with a push into an empty net. This spurred BBHC back into life and silenced the home crowd with a slick move that saw Dan Lucas set up Jamie Perfitt to deflect the ball past the Epsom Keeper.
The game settled down for a period with chances at either end but some BBHC mistakes let Epsom in to score three very easy goals.
4:1 at half time and the game looked all over, especially when Epsom stretched the lead with the first touch of the second half. BBHC really dug deep and struck back with a flicked short corner from Marvin Kennedy.
BBHC had a put a lot into the game but were found wanting with Epsom counter attacking any break down in play with great speed and in the latter part of the half converted four very simple breakaway goals, leaving the final score 9:2 to Epsom.
With the Easter break this week BBHC's last game of the season is at home to Trojans in two weeks time.
[Alex Webster]
2nd XI 11 - 1 Horsham (H)
BBHC's 2nd XI men signed off in style this week, claiming the Kent/Sussex
Open Division 1 championship with an 11-1 win over Horsham.
The home side were keen to put the previous week's slip behind them and started at pace keeping Horsham penned into their defensive third. It wasn't long before Mark Ashby started the party with a rasping drive from the top of the D, firing across the keeper and into the top left corner of the net. The Bs didn't look back and scored 3 more before the half time whistle.
A cautious team-talk from skipper Paul Harvey ensured that the energy and work rate remained high throughout the second half, and the home side responded with a further 3 goals before Horsham finally put something on the scoreboard. A broken down short corner found its way back to the top of the D for the Horsham striker to confidently despatch the ball into the bottom right corner. This minor setback did nothing to dampen the party atmosphere, and the Bs treated the home crowd to a further 4 goals, the pick of which came from a mazy run by Jimmy Henderson, composure personified.
At a guess(!), I'd say the home goals came from Ashby (5), Henderson (2), Pickersgill, Wrake, D Humber, and Harvey.
Jubilant chants rang throughout the clubhouse long into the night, as the 2s celebrated their championship winning season coming to an end. Final stats for the team were as follows: Played 20 W 16 D 2 L 2 Goals For 79 Goals Against 21. Amongst those stats lies an incredible 100% home record, 10 wins, 45 goals scored with just 7 against.
Finally, a message from the captain:
"I would like to thank everyone for their efforts this year, it's truly a huge team performance which has got us through the season. It's been a great achievement by everyone both on and off the field. You always enjoy it more when you become champions.
I'm sure that you would all join me in thanking Phil Watson for umpiring throughout, it helps when you have someone so experienced holding a whistle. It's about getting it right throughout the season, which we cannot fault this time round. So a big thanks to everyone who has helped with the team and for those who have kept things going when I have not been around.
I would like to see as many of you at the annual dinner which is on the 5th April at the club, it should be a good night to celebrate again! Tickets are available from Julie, £20 before 31st March, £25 thereafter. Lets enjoy being champions, and when it's time, start to rethink how we approach the new league (which will be less travelling), we'll need to be more professional and focused next year. I hope you all enjoyed the season as much as me, it's not every day that you become champions. Thanks Paul"

3rd XI 1 - 6 Bexley Invicta (A)
With 2 games left of a dismal season, BBHC's Men's 3rd XI needed all
3 points from their derby match with Bexley Invicta's 1st XI to stand
any chance of
avoiding last place in Kent Open Premier A. It was not to be.
A solid first half without conceding goals was needed and it looked to be on
the cards with some solid hockey from the whole team and a number of chances
created. However, a well-struck BI short corner slammed into the left corner
of the goal to begin the rot. Poor defending all round saw Invicta sail through
to score 3 more goals. Meanwhile, numerous BBHC shots were frustratingly placed
directly at the opposing 'keeper, barely forcing him to make any deliberate saves.
4-0 down at half-time but the spirit that saw the B's come back to draw 3-3 with
Sevenoaks 4's the week before was still there. Instant dividends were reaped
in the 2nd minute of the 2nd half when Allan "Chuckie" Sains' drag-flicked
short corner shot was rebounded successfully by Jon Light.
Hopes were high of more goals but the rather pedestrian BI defence were well
supported by their midfield and imposing 'keeper. Passions normally run high
in such fixtures but the spirit remained good-natured - the only blemish was
the BI captain's unsporting, scarlet-faced outburst (it was thought that he had
forgotten he was playing against the 3rd XIs of other clubs).
BBHC's improved play in the 2nd half came to nothing thanks to 2 more BI goals
and more missed BBHC chances. While BI celebrated the victory that sealed their
league title, BBHC are rooted to the bottom and were left to reflect on a poor
season. They failed to adapt to the absence of a number of the high stamina players
from
the
season
before, which
made a significant difference to their performances and style of play. And
those
drawn
matches early in the campaign (which should have been turned into victories)
came back
to haunt them. However, the potential of league restructuring means relegation
has yet to be confirmed.
One more game left to go after Easter, at home to University of Kent. Plus the
possibility of the rearranged fixture at home to Cliftonville.
[Andrei Mendis]
5th XI 2 - 9 Holcombe (A)
A strong Holcombe side hosted the 5th XI on Saturday.
Holcombe started out strong and found themselves 1 - 0 up after some lack marking 2 minutes into the game. BBHC performance gradually improve through the half as they started to string some moves together. Despite this, they were unable to contain the attacking force of Holcombe and found themselves 4 - 0 down at half time.
The second half saw a more determined BBHC come out, but despite this Holcombe further extended their lead from a short corner. BBHC hit back though quickly though with a short corner converted by Sammy Chana. Holcombe quickly converted again before BBHC grabbed another when a shot from David Bates was deflected high into the net off a defender. Before the final whistle Holcombe managed to convert a final 3 goals to leave the final score at 9-2 to the home side.

Kent U11 Boys Championships (at Ashford Hockey Club)
The U11's took part in the Kent round of the National Mini Hockey Championships
on Sunday. An enthusiastic but inexperienced squad of 7 boys and 3 girls
arrived at grey and wet Ashford HC for 3 matches in their qualifying group.
The first match was a tight close fought encounter against our local friends and rivals Alex McCleod School who managed to grab a late but deserved winner to make it 1-0 to them.
The second match was against Canterbury B and despite some valiant defending from our team, the superior Canterbury teamwork paid off and they won 4-0.
The third match as against Wickham Common School who had earlier beaten Canterbury. Their speed and accurate passing quickly overcame our spirited defending and they run out easy victors 8-0.
The whole squad was a little disappointed with the results but seemed to enjoy the afternoon and all improved as the games went on.
Thank you to the many family supporters who travelled down to Ashford in such poor conditions to cheer on the team.
[Steve Hawes]
U16 Boys 1 - 0 Old Williamsonians (H)
On a cold blustery day at Mayplace Astroturf, BBHC Under 16s welcomed
Old Williamsonians for the re-arranged and last fixture of the season.
Both teams started off well but it was O.W who had the better possession, having numerous attempts on goal and winning several short corners throughout the half. But with some good BBHC defending and some good luck in places BBHC went in at half time with scores level.
The second half saw a more solid defensive performance from BBHC but attacking chances were few and far between. O.W continued to create chances but the defence still stood strong.
With mere minutes to go BBHC grabbed the lead and all 3 points after BBHC caught O.W on the break with a well worked move finished off by Tarin Chana at the far post.
[Alex Webster]
U16 Girls 0 - 6 Tunbridge Wells 1 (H)
U16 Girls 0 - 0 Ashford (H)
Due to a busy season, BBHC's U16 Girls needed to play a triangle of matches to
complete their seasons fixtures against Tunbridge Wells 1 and Ashford.
On a horrible day for weather, BBHC braved their first game against the league leaders who showed why they were at the top. However, BBHC battled hard with some great saves from their goalkeeper Millie Palmer, the score could have been a lot more. Losing 6 – 0, it was difficult to then focus for their next game against Ashford.
Cold, wet and tired they found some more energy for their last game of the season. BBHC controlled the game and had many near misses, both from open play and short corners but it was not to be. BBHC's 0-0 draw with Ashford leaves them mid-table in the Kent U16 Girls’ league.

1st XI 2 - 4 Rover Oxford (H)
BBHC played Rover Oxford this weekend in a tight relegation match. Rover
Oxford struck first when a shot hit the post and rebounded kindly to
the centre forward
who slotted the ball home. BBHC bounced back when some great movement by the
forwards allowed the centre of the pitch to open up and Ben Bradley to ghost
into the area and crisply strike the ball into the corner past the stranded
Rover Oxford keeper.
BBHC had a golden chance to take the lead but unfortunately Dan Lucas was unable to convert the chance. Rover Oxford immediately punished BBHC when they took the lead with a breakaway goal which was flicked past the BBHC keeper. Although the game was very even two slips by BBHC allowed Rover Oxford to consolidate their lead by scoring twice more. BBHC piled on the pressure and were rewarded when a diving Kevin King deflected a short corner high into the Rover Oxford goal. BBHC needed the points so late on pushed several players forward but Rover Oxford held out to this late onslaught winning 4:2. Next week BBHC travel to Epsom.
[Peter Stanley]
3rd XI 3 - 3 Sevenoaks (H)
The 3rd XI welcomed Sevenoaks 4th XI for this weeks Kent Premier A fixture
at a blustery Mayplace astro.
With a good preparation BBHC hoped to start out strong but found themselves 0 – 1 down after a hit into the BBHC D was deflected over the defences' heads and landed at the Sevenoak's attacker's feet, who promptly slotted home.
BBHC bounced back quickly creating three good chances within 5 minutes but all where spurned. Sevenoaks soon took a hold of the game and grabbed a second goal before BBHC managed to grab one from a well struck short corner from Andy Humber.
Sevenoaks secured another goal early in the second half but despite the 2 goal defeceit BBHC continued to fight.
BBHC found a way back into the game after a quickly take hit outside the D saw a shot by Andy Franklin was saved by the Sevenoaks keeper and followed up by Joe Brown from close range.
The home side found themselves level from another set piece 2 minutes from time. A hit outside the D was fired into a crowded D and after a scramble was tapped home by Andy Galbraith at the far post.
Next week BBHC "visit" top of the table Bexley Invicta.

Veterans - Burnt Ash Veterns' Tournament
Tournaments are always difficult to report on since so much happens,
but since we are such good friends with Burnt Ash, and since so many
of our players were
there, several playing for other sides (mainly RASRA), I feel obliged to mention
a few high and low points. Burnt Ash dishonoured themselves by winning their
own tournament for a second time, but since they were probably the best side,
this is almost forgivable. We lost 1 - 0 to them in our first game, victims
of both a terrible bobble which led to their goal, and of unnecessarily pedantic
umpiring which led to one of our team being yellow carded for dissent, and
which set the umpiring tone for the rest of the day.
We beat Cobdown, drew with Blackheath, lost to Wallington (having been ahead) and then in a fantastic and eventful game, beat RASRA, and not many teams can say that. This game was notable for the fact that we won after going behind, and for the fact that despite it being a sportingly contested game between friends, three players found themselves dismissed, two from RASRA and one from BBHC. The vets update is not, and never has been, in the business of singling out individual players for ridicule and public humiliation, and so the names of those unfortunates who had yellow cards thrust in their direction will be withheld.
It must
be noted however that four players were yellow carded during this tournament,
and all of them are to be found on the members list of BBHC. This shows commitment
to the cause of the first order on the part of BBHC players, but it must
be
said that a more insidious analysis might equally be made. Two of these players
were dismissed for dissent (which we cannot condone), one was dismissed for
a deliberate stick foul, resulting in blood loss to a nose (unforgivable,
but since it was his own nose, justice may be seen to be done), and
one was dismissed
for mere mild clumsiness as a result of tired legs, after which everyone
agreed that the perpetrator was hard done by (indeed all voiced the
opinion that the decision might just have easily gone the other way).
Three of our players should
therefore think long and hard about their conduct.
Simon Ross organised the tournament, and is to be applauded for a well run
and competitive day. Dave Ovenell (Daddy O) convened the umpires, and dealt
with
a difficult man-managing situation very well. Thanks are due to everyone who
played. A thoroughly good time was had by all.

1st XI 2 - 4 Banbury 1st XI (A)
Playing away, BBHC took on second in the league Banbury HC, this week.
With absences from a number of key players the 1st XI welcomed back
Andrew Horseman to the
team and saw a number of players taking on new positions.
An early injury for silky skilled Andres Labourt meant that the pressure was on straight away for the B's but after some solid defending and some goal line saves, the BBHC team broke down Banbury's defence and a hit into the D from stand in in captain Steve Harding gave Dan Lucas the opportunity to push one past the keeper into the Banbury goal. Despite several breaks from the Banbury forward line BBHC held their own and finished 1-0 up at the end of the first half.
Banbury put on the pressure for the second half and winning a short corner excecuted a well rehersed routine past the BB defence. Shortly after, a fired up Banbury broke down play and on the break put one past Gareth Bayliss in goal to make the score line 2-1 to the home team. Another one to follow from Banbury against a tired BB defence but the BB spirit never died and after winning a short corner Marvin put a well placed flick onto the back board.
Giving everything the BB team showed determination but with tired legs a commited goldberg gave away a flick which was well placed by Banbury past the keeper. Home win for Banbury 4-2 the final score.
[Stephen Harding]
2nd XI 2 - 0 South Saxons 2nd XI (H)
BBHC's 2nd XI men crept ever closer to the league title this week with
a good win against South Saxons, the only team to have taken all three
points from the
2s this season.
The one trait that sets the away side apart from many teams in the league is their fight and spirit, closing down quickly and trying to force their opponents into errors. BBHC were not about to roll over however and picked the passes moving gradually up into the Saxons third. The B's took the lead within the first 10 minutes when Mike Leigh ghosted into D and put the goal at the mercy of Mark Ashby. The lead was then doubled when Rob Porter pounced on the pads of the goalkeeper to convert the home side's first short corner.
The second half was played out in the midfield, both sides scrambling to get their sticks on the ball and create some meaningful possession. It is within this congested area that Jimmy Henderson plies his trade, countless interceptions and flashes of his talent from bygone years deservedly won the ageing superstar this week's Man of the Match award (although I was going to vote for Kevin!).
Rumours are circulating that Steve Porter made a save this week, low down to his right sweeping the ball away with the stick. This intervention undoubtedly kept the Saxons boys in their cages and made the closing stages that bit more comfortable for the table toppers. Desperate to get at least something for their travels, the Saxons' captain threw caution and sensibility to the wind and tried to change the goalkeeper for another attacking player. Cue a stoppage of unprecedented proportions whilst the umpires scoured their glove-boxes for a copy of the rule-book. Eventually, after promising to settle the dispute in the bar by way of a cash fine, the game resumed with the goalkeeper back on the pitch. The away side may have felt aggrieved, but not as much as teams scheduled later that day who were forced to play their second half by the light of the moon!
Another strong performance from the 2s maintains their 100% home record, and leaves them requiring just 2 points from the 2 remaining games to clinch the league title.
[Mike Leigh]
3rd XI 1 - 4 Marden Russetts 2nd XI (A)
After last weeks "victory" that BBHC are still within touching
distance of Cliftonville placed above them in the Kent Premier A league.
After disappointing performances since Christmas, BBHC were hoping for
a win against Marden, who had also been struggling form recently.
The games started well for BBHC, who created chances from the start. The energetic runnning of debutant Sukh Chaggar in the centre of midfield gave BBHC something that they had been lacking since the loss of Steve Neville. After the initial, slightly cautious probes from both sides BBHC soon began to play the type of hockey that they have always been capable and pinned Marden back for long spells. Despite several good oppotunities and short corners, a goal was not forthcoming, There was a strong shout for a penalty stroke when the ball was (allegedly) stopped on the line by a foot, but with both umpires unsighted a short corner was all that was given.
BBHC continued to create chances but went a goal behind after Marden converted a short corner from close range. The visitors nearly levelled when Jon Light had a shot well saved by an outstretcehd keeper. Despite the better of the play in the first half, BBHC found themselves 2 down after a well struck long corner pinged about in the D before being tapped home by the Marden forward.
Despite the negative score line it had been a very positive display by BBHC up until now. This may have contributed to the deterioration in the second half, which saw BBHC gradually become more frustrated, as despite playing the better hockey they still could not get that vital goal.
The second half was a more open affair as BBHC slowly lost their stranglehold on the game but after a mistake in defence found themselves even further behind. With one of the Marden players being yellowed for a second deliberate foot, BBHC thought they had an oppotunity to work their way back into the game, especially after a ball was scrambled home by the hard working Andy Humber but their luck was still bad as a short corner sweetly struck by Allan Sains hit the post. With the re-introduction of the carded player Marden managed to grab a final goal before the final whistle.
Despite the flattering 4 -1 score line to Marden, this was a much improved performance by the 3rd XI from a game where they deserved at least a point.
Man of the match was awarded to Sukh Chaggar after a great debut and DOD to Mark Pellat.

competitive game. A very tight first half saw very few chances at either
end and it ended nil nil.
In the second half Tulse Hill continued to have the territorial advantage but BBHC's defence was excellent, restricting Tulse Hill to just a few half chances. Technical fouls by David Pyke and Legohead Ben Bradley saw BBHC reduced to ten men twice during the second half and it was during the second of these that Tulse Hill struck with a shot from the top of the area, that was going wide, being deflected in on the post by the Tulse Hill striker.
BBHC kept their
composure
and formation and nearly caught Tulse Hill out on the break a couple
of times. In the dying seconds Tulse Hill grabbed a late second
with a well taken flick from a tight angle to run out 2:0 winners.
BBHC
are away at Banbury next week.

2nd XI 5 - 1 Sutton Valence 2nd XI (A)
Every game seems to be a cup final for the 2's at the moment. And if
that were true, they'd be putting an order in for a new trophy cabinet.
The visitors arrived in good time for the 4pm start and used the empty
pitch to get the ball going and get focused on the job in hand.
The visitors started out quick and aggressive and forced Valence into a number of errors, losing the ball almost as soon as they had won it. Mark Ashby took no time at all in punishing some confused defending to put the league leaders ahead. Ashby added another soon after with a well taken flick from a short corner, made by an excellent drag out from Wrake which could only be described as "in the right area". The home side very rarely troubled BBHC's goal but for a couple of set plays that were comfortably dealt with. The game was all but over when a Valence defender was pressured into a mistake and David Humber hit an unstoppable reverse strike high into the far corner from a tight angle. Half-time 0-3.
Valence were showing signs of frustration, and probably embarrassment in front of their home crowd which threatened to ruin the spirit of the tie. Although this undoubtedly showed signs of fight, it was certainly to their detriment and Andy Mendel, forced to play out of position in this game, found time and space in the D to skip past the keeper and place the ball into the open goal. Valence nicked a consolation after a couple of incidents were missed by the umpires and the ball was forced in from close range with the B's keeper Steve Porter presumably still half asleep through lack of activity. Ashby completed the scoring, and yet another hat-trick firing through the keeper after his initial effort was blocked.
This win ensures the 2's a top 2 finish in the league, but the title race goes on. As such, the next cup final will be played at Erith School, with South Saxons (the only side to have beaten the 2's this year) attempting to breach the league leader's 100% home record.

U16 Boys 2 - 6 Holcombe (A))
After several impressive results BBHC U16s visited a strong Holcombe
side one place above them in the league.
Holcombe started out strong moving the ball about well and putting the
BBHC defence under pressure from the start. Holcombe tgook a swift lead,
scoring 3 within the first 10 minutes. Sensing a goal fest Holcombe soon
stopped playing the attractive hockey that they had been and began running
with the ball. This gave BBHC a chance to get their act together and
they began to play the kind of hockey that they are capable of playing.
Holcombe managed to grab another goal before Dave grabbed one
for BBHC with solo effort finishing from the top of the D. 4-1 at half
time.
BBHC cam out the second half strong and had Holcombe on the back foot
for a while, winning several short corners. Holcombe responded well and
came back strong wining repeated short corners, from which one they managed
to extend their lead. BBHC managed to grab one back after Andrew Newton
tapped home after a scramble in the D. Holcombe managed to grab a final
goal before the final whistle. Final score 6 - 2.

1st XI 3 - 2 Winchester 1st XI (A)
BBHC Men's first team were away at Winchester this Saturday. A fiery
game saw BBHC pick up three yellow cards and Winchester one. BBHC edged
the first
half but made Winchester pay as they converted the chances that came to them.
Dan Lucas struck first after he tucked the rebound from his own shot coolly
past the keeper. Two goals from Andres Labourt, the first from a short corner
strike that went through the Winchester keeper and the second a sweetly struck
shot from the top of the area gave BBHC a 3:0 half time lead.
Winchester came out firing for the first part of the second half and scored twice in quick succession, the first a short corner that post man Kevin King could only take the pace off the shot and the ball crept over the line, the second a penalty stroke. The game levelled off but chances were had at both ends, notably the BBHC striker Andres Labourt hitting the crossbar. BBHC ended the game 3:2 winners, making it a three match unbeaten run.
Next week, BBHC host top of the table Tulse Hill.

Kent Plate - Semi final (Sunday 17th February): 1st XI 5 -
1 Bexley Invicta 1st XI (A)
On Sunday BBHC Men's first team played Bexley Invicta in the Semi
Final of the Kent Plate. BBHC controlled the early period of the
game and, after a few chances,
Kevin King opened the scoring for BBHC with a deflected short corner. A spirited
Bexley Invicta had a few break away chances and pulled level when a mix up
in the BBHC area ended with the ball rolling through the BBHC keeper's legs.
BBHC continued to press Bexley Invicta high up the pitch and were rewarded
with a second when Kevin King cheekily lobbed the Bexley Invicta keeper from
another short corner. Sam Ashenden scored the third to make the half time
score 3:1 to BBHC with a flicked short corner.
BBHC continued the second half as they had in the first, by pressing Bexley
Invicta back and they scored twice more when Sam Ashenden picked out a diving
Jamie Perfitt who deflected the ball past the keeper into the corner of the
goal and James Baldwin who blasted the ball in from close range with the
last hit of the game.
Final score ended with BBHC running out 5:1 winners. Notable debuts were had by Alex Webster and David Mason.

2nd XI 7 - 1 Kings College London 2nd XI (H)
BBHC retain their position at the summit of the Kent Sussex Open Divison
1 with confident win against visiting King's College.
Phil Price opened the scoring with a snap shot from the top of the D which, with the keeper, unsighted by his own defence, powered through at the far post. Goals then followed from Mark Ashby and another from Phil Price before half time.
The second half continued in the same vein as the first with BBHC having most the possession and creating chances, limiting the visitors to the occasional counter attack. Phil Price completed his hat-trick with a scuffed shot over the keeper shortly after half time before Mark Ashby added to his tally with a short corner drag flick.
King's College managed to grab a consolation with a well place LBZ before Andrew Horseman managed to increase the total to six. Mark Ashby then finished off the scoring with a short corner strike to complete his hat-trick.

3rd XI 1 - 5 Burnt Ash 3rd XI (H)
After last weeks disappointing surrender to a strong Holcombe side, BBHC
3rd XI were looking to put up a more of a fight in this derby game
with local side
Burnt Ash.
BBHC started out strong, and moved the ball round putting pressure on the Ash defence. Several short corners were won and despite the good execution were well saved by the young Ash keeper. Ash's confidence grew throughout the half and midway through the half they sneaked a goal with a deflection creeping in at the near post.
BBHC continued to push men forward and despite creating chances were constantly thwarted by the opposition keeper. Ash soon doubled the lead after a well worked corner which saw the Ash forward dribble past the runners and smash the ball home. 2-0 the score stayed until half time.
BBHC came out for the 2nd half hoping to force their way back into the game but two quick goals by Ash put the fixture out of BBHC reach. Despite this BBHC continued to put in 100% effort and found themselves with some consolation when the short corner routines finally paid off with a drag flick from Allan "Chuckie" Sains.
As the 3rd XI poured players forward to seek out another consiilation fixture they were caught by another As break, leaving the final score 1-5 to the Ash.
Despite a disappointing result, it was a much better performance from BBHC with everyone putting in 100%. Next week Deal visit.

Men's Reports
1st XI 2 - 2 Eastcote 1st XI (H)
BBHC Men's 1st team entertained Eastcote this weekend, who were level
on points with the home team.
The first half was even but Eastcote took the lead with a flicked short corner going in at the post. Eastcote doubled their advantage with a well struck diagonal shot that slipped through the BBHC goalkeepers legs. This was the only mistake that Gareth "Goldberg" Bayliss, the BBHC' Keeper, made and he ended the game receiving the man of the match award.
BBHC scored a flicked short corner of their own and a well worked move saw the ball moved several times within the area with Kevin King getting the final touch but the whistle was blown just before the ball crossed the line. David Pyke coolly converted the resulting penalty flick to draw BBHC level.
Again BBHC squandered several excellent chances during the half which could have resulted in them have a commanding half time lead, instead the score was level at two apiece.
The game got a little scrappy in the second half with neither team wanting to drop points. Chances were had at both ends but the final score ended 2:2 which on reflection was a fair result.
BBHC are away at Winchester next week.

Harrod UK Men's Trophy - 4th Round (Sun 10th Feb): 1st XI 0 - 3 Devizes 1st XI (H)
On a sunny Sunday afternoon the crowd came out to see BBHC play Devizes
in Round 4 of the England Hockey Men's Trophy (sponsored by Harrod
UK).
The first half saw Devizes take a 2:0 lead when some sloppy marking left the Devizes striker free at the top of the area to pick his shot into the BBHC goal twice. The half time score of 2:0 was not a fair reflection of the half, in which BBHC had once again not taken their clear cut chances that fell to them.
The second half continued in the same way to the first, with both sides giving full commitment to the game but BBHC were unable to hit back at Devizes even with the crowd raising the volume on the sideline.
Late on Devizes sealed the game with a classy third goal when the Devizes striker slap chipped the ball over the approaching BBHC 'keeper. The young BBHC striker David Humber had a good run out for BBHC who are hoping for great things from him in the future.

2nd XI 4 - 1 Tunbridge Wells 2nd XI (A)
Another spirited second half performance allowed BBHC to take the points
in a hard fought game down in Tunbridge Wells. As has been the case all too
often for BBHC's Men's 2nd XI, they failed to make possession, pressure and
chances tell, and found themselves a goal behind after a rare T. Wells
attack. BBHC's
midfield allowed the attacker far too much space and he beat the last defender
at pace before slipping the ball past the keeper.
The goal came as a shock to the league leaders, but they remained resolute and continued to plug away with wave after wave of attacking play. During the onslaught, BBHC found the T. Wells keeper in inspired form and he single-handedly kept his side in front at the break, most notably with a brilliant double save from Kevin Wrake.
Despite their concern at the immediate stats, the visitors didn't have too many complaints from the first half and merely tightened things up for the second. 'Wells were once again penned into their defensive third for long spells, and their resistance finally broke as Rob Porter levelled the scores, slapping in from close range. The B's were now working hard and breaking down 'Wells' possession quickly and efficiently, and it was no surprise when they took the lead. Mark Ashby drove wide into the D and hit a strike back across into the far corner, a goal worthy of winning any tie.
David Humber extended the lead, as the ball ricocheted into the young striker's path he simply adjusted his feet and calmly fired into the net, before posing quite outrageously to the cameras.
Man of the Match Ashby rounded off the scoring late on, the striker tried his best to miss the open goal he was presented with, but composed himself and put the ball home at the second time of asking.
Another good, gritty team performance from BBHC's 2nd XI, who will be bolstered next week by the return of captain Paul Harvey.
[Mike Leigh]
3rd XI 0 - 5 Holcombe 3A (A)
As a general rule, having a car full of players hit by a rather large,
careless Spanish lorry on the A2 is not the best preparation for a
game at Holcombe.
Despite
everyone being unhurt, the delayed BBHC Men's 3rd XI still turned up with
one player less than they left with, as the irate Andrei Mendis escorted
his car
to
the
garage.
So with a lack of preparation, BBHC nervously started the game. Holcombe were on the front foot from the start and stretched BBHC. However, the visitors stayed strong and put together a few attacks of their own. After fifteen minutes though Holcombe finally took a deserved lead. BBHC kept their heads up and continued to play but the attacks rarely ventured into the opposition 25. Holcombe managed to slot home another two goals before half time with little fight from BBHC.
The second half continued with Holcombe pinning BBHC back for large spells. BBHC managed to create a few chances but were unable to force a save from Holcombe's 1st XI bench-warmer. Holcombe managed to score another two goals this half.
A disappointing, lacklustre performance from BBHC that desperately requires improvement. Man of match went to Jim Jackson in goal without whom the score would have been much greater.

Ladies' Reports
1st XI 3 - 1 Hertford 1st XI (H)
Another match report from the Ladies 1st XI... things must be looking
up!
This gloriously sunny afternoon at Erith School saw BBHC entertain Hertford. In our close and highly competitive league, Hertford have been a consistent team stuck around mid-table. Hoping to build on last week's performance, the Bs desperately needed the 3 points from today's game to have any chance of escaping relegation and with that in mind, the same 11 from the previous week lined up to take on the challenge.
The game started at a high pace with both teams keen to take the early advantage. The B's were disciplined in their approach and played together as a unit, patiently waiting for the opportunity to strike. This came around the ten minute mark when Sorcha Crowley was released down the right hand side taking on the defender and running the ball from the half way line. This superb solo effort was rewarded as she cut into the D and calmly placed the ball past the goalkeeper. This 1-0 lead remained into half time.
Having let go of a 2 goal lead last week, it was imperative that the Bs remained focussed. As legs began to tire, our concentration faltered and we allowed Hertford to get a goal back.
Unlike previous performances, the Bs refused to settle for a draw and pushed forward on the opposition. The BBHC attacking trio (Leah Kember-Hollands; Karen Hall; Sorcha Crowley) relentlessly pressured the Hertford defence creating a number of chances for the Bs. Their superb play upfront was duly compensated with another goal from the on form Crowley, her cross from the right deflecting off the defenders stick, onto the cross bar and into the side netting.
In the lead and refusing to be the victims of a late opposition goal once more, the Bs maintained their pressure on Hertford. Again on the attack, Zoë Hubbard found herself on the right with time to execute a perfectly struck ball from the 25, finding Leah Kember-Hollands on the far post to finish for the B's third goal.
A convincing performance and a convincing win for the Ladies 1st XI. The much deserved 3 points lifts us from the bottom of the table, but not yet out of danger. Watch this space

U16 Girls 2 - 5 Sevenoaks A (A)
On a bright sunny day in February, BBHC went to Sevenoaks for a tough
game with only 11 players.
A great start saw BBHC take an earlier lead by a well taken short corner scored by Ellie Kember Hollands, which was then shortly followed up by a goal by Sorcha Crowley in open play. Unfortunately due to an injury, BBHC lost a defender. Sevenoaks took advantage and equalised with two goals before half time.
In the second half both sides had opportunity through end-to-end play. Sevenoaks put the pressure on the BBHC defence to score a short corner and two in open play.

1st XI 6 - 1 City of Portsmouth 1st XI (H)
BBHC Mens 1st team hit City of Portsmouth for six this weekend in what
they hope will kick start the second half of their season.
The first half was dominated by BBHC but their efforts were only rewarded with a solitary goal, after they squandered several chances. Andres Labourt hit first as he drove the ball in from the left and unleashed a strike into the bottom corner.
BBHC continued to apply the pressure in the second half and were rewarded with a Kevin King goal from a deflected short corner. The young City of Portsmouth team did not give up and clawed one back from a loose ball after a broken down short corner
BBHC stuttered for a five minute spell but regained their confidence and pushed forward again with the goals coming thick and fast. Andres Labourt getting his brace with a sweetly struck short corner powered through the City of Portsmouth's goalkeepers legs.
This was shortly followed by a Phil Price hat-trick. For the first he received the ball wide of the City of Portsmouth goal but he coolly finished by flicking the ball over the diving keeper into the net. With time running down Phil Price hit twice more to complete his hat-trick, first with a deflection and then a clean, reverse-stick strike from the top of the area. His adoring fans at the side of the pitch were jubilant! One young lady fainted in all the excitement.
The final score was a well deserved 6:1 win for BBHC who next week entertain Eastcote at home.
[Peter Stanley]
2nd XI 4 - 0 Folkestone 3rd XI (A)
When Folkestone came to visit earlier in the season, BBHC managed to
put 7 goals in with 7 different names on the score sheet, and it was
a similarly spirited,
team effort that got the Bs through this game.
Normally, when you play Folkestone away, the pitch and the weather conspire against you and very little hockey gets played. Thankfully, it was a bright sunny day and the visitors were in no mood to blame a surface for dropping points.
The game started at a frantic pace and Folkestone were on the back foot as the Bs set up camp in their half. Kevin Wrake signalled his return with a well taken goal from a short corner. Plenty of chances presented themselves throughout the half, but BBHC were nearly caught napping at the back as the youthful Folkestone attack broke away in spurts. Half-time 0-1.
The second goal would be crucial, and David Humber settled nerves as he raced into the D and despatched a low reverse strike past the keeper. The Bs started to enjoy themselves and created a great team goal, Wrake set off down the right, finding Humber in the D who calmly slipped the ball for Mark Ashby to put the ball into the empty net.
The victory was rounded off with a freak goal from Jimmy Henderson - the Folkestone defender could count himself unlucky as his clearance hit a team-mate on the knee and the ball rolled across to Henderson at the top of the D, and he hit his shot first time into the corner.
As in the first game between these sides, BBHC shared the scoring and are looking increasingly like a team who can press on and top the table. Final score 0-4.
[Mike Leigh]
5th XI 2 - 6 Tunbridge Wells 4th XI (H)
Tunbridge Wells were short of one player for this fixture, but it soon
became evident that this was more than made up by the quality of those
who were present.
The hone side initially kept the visitors in their own half, but soon the TW defenders were quick identify gaps in the midfield to lay on accurate passes to their forwards. James Breaker in the home goal produced a couple of fine saves but eventually slack marking by the defence allowed the visitors to open their account with a well struck shot. Shortly after this their lead was doubled when a firm cross was deflected into the net. BBHC continued to press forward but this was at the cost of leaving gaps in the midfield which were exploited by the visitors to score two further goals before half time.
After the break the home side applied more pressure on the visiting defence and they were eventually rewarded when Vince Moore found the net from close range. More pressure ensued and the lead was further reduced when a goal bound shot was stopped illegally, the resulting penalty stroke being converted by Vince Moore. This caused the visitors to raise their game which resulted in two more quick goals, the second from a follow-up shot form a penalty corner after an outstanding save by the 'keeper.
Not to be totally overwhelmed, BBHC forced another penalty stroke when Harpal Kalsi was challenged illegally by a defender, but on this occasion the shot went wide of the post. Your correspondent is open to bribes to reveal the name of the guilty party.

Ladies' Reports
1st XI 2 - 2 Harpenden 1st XI (A)
The return of the Ladies 1st XI match reports would suggest that we finally
have something positive to relay, and I'm glad to say that we have!
Having continued our early season efforts and battled hard over the past few games, the Ladies 1st XI have been unable to pick up any points leaving us firmly rooted to the bottom of the table. A trip to take on 3rd positioned Harpenden was as good an opportunity as any for the Bs to halt their losing streak.
The previous meeting between these 2 teams saw a BBHC victory in possibly their best performance of the season to date, to beat this opposition again with a number of changes to the squad and being only able to take the bare eleven was a daunting task.
The B's stood loud and proud, and it paid off. BBHC started strongly with some impressive early attacking play. Perhaps to the surprise of the opposition, we were certainly not there to go down without a fight, despite what our results might suggest.
It wasn't long before the attacking pressure resulted in our 1st short corner of the game. In previous week's we have been unable to convert these opportunities into goals but as it was slipped to the right, Sorcha Crowley swept at the ball and, taking a deflection off the oppo's stick, it flew into the goal!
Both sides continued as if it were still 0-0 in an evenly matched battle. As the B's began to open the field playing superb short balls around their opposition, they were awarded their 2nd short corner. In an almost identical move, the B's again took advantage of the right slip and as Sorcha went for goal, Karen Hall deflected the ball straight past the Goalie.
2-0 up and unchartered territory for the B's, we knew the 2nd half was going to be difficult and as legs grew tired, we hoped we could hold on to the lead. Harps were first out of the blocks in the 2nd half and within 10 minutes were awarded a penalty flick. With the memories of previous games in BBHC minds, was this the point where the tables turn and we return home defeated once again? The Harps player stepped up but was unable to beat the BBHC Goalie, Karen White, who superbly saved to her left. Go on Whitey!!
The game commenced and Harps were far from finished. They continued to pressure and a break down the left found a lone player in the D who finished well. The B's continued to dig deep and withstood the pressure for sometime, eventually allowing Harps to get the better of them once again shortly before time.
The game finished 2 all. Overall a good result for BBHC and a much needed point. Is this the start of the great escape from relegation? I hope I'm writing a match report next week! The only way is up!
Player of the Match: Karen White.

2nd XI 3 - 2 Old WIlliamsonians 1st XI (H)
On a cold, blustery day both teams started slowly getting used to the
pace of the game. Old Williamsonians scored the first following a quick
break down
the right. BBHC levelled the score 5 minutes later when Sue Hetherington smartly
tucking away the rebound off the keeper from Vicky Bilby's initial strike.
Scored remained 1-1 till half time.
Just into the second half, Old Williamsonians again took the lead with a well taken shot from the top of the circle. BBHC battled against a Old Williamsonians onslaught, to break away down the left wing gaining a side line hit. A quickly taken side line ball found Vicky Bilby alone with the keeper in the circle & she convert the cross into the top right hand corner to make it 2-2.
Last 10 minutes game could have gone either way, BBHC pressure lead to two short corners in a row, the second of which was converted by Chloe Phipps from a Jane Augustin shot. BBHC held on to win 3-2.

Colts' Report
U16 Boys 3 - 3 Tunbridge Wells (H)
BBHC Under 16s played host to the visiting Tunbridge Wells on Sunday.
The game started off an even affair with both teams probing each others defence with neither side really testing the others keeper. As the half progressed though chances were found by both sides. It was the visitors who struck first with a well worked short corner. BBHC kept their heads up though and won several short corners themselves, but the normally slick routines failed to pay off. T.W doubled their lead before half time with converting a controversially awarded short corner.
BBHC came out of the second half a new side and pinned T.W back from the start. A goal finally came after some good skills from Sam down the right drew the keeper out for the ball to be slipped across and Dave to finish it off with a tap in.
BBHC continued to pile on the pressure in search of an equaliser but some good saves from the T.W keeper kept the visitors in the lead. It was a mistake by the keeper that saw BBHC to equalise when a hit outside the D was deflected by Sam with out the keeper realising and allowing it to roll into the goal.
With the scores now level, a win looked a real possibility and, after a good attack down the left from Blake, a penalty stroke was won after the ball was stopped on the line with a deliberate foot. The resulting flick was put wide by David.
T.W soon found themselves in the lead after a rare attack saw a short corner won and again converted with a drag flick.
With 5 minutes remaining BBHC surged forward in an attempt to grab something from the game. Good work down the right from Blake saw him beat his defender before switching the ball right, where Sam again rounded the keeper but this time the pass was not necessary and he slipped the ball home himself.
A solid performance from all those involved and a well deserved point.

BBHC Men's first team were away at West Hampstead last weekend, who were
equal second in the table. BBHC took West Hampstead by surprise forcing
them onto the back foot in the early exchanges but West Hampstead hit
back and took the lead from their first serious attack with a sweetly
struck reverse stick hit after 10 minutes.
BBHC pulled level half way through the half when the ball fell to Andres Labourt at the top of the D and he calmly converted with a reverse stick strike of his own, into the bottom corner, leaving the keeper no chance.
BBHC had a couple of clear cut chances to take the lead after this but they squandered them, leaving the score 1:1 at half time.
West Hampstead came out strong in the second half and a well worked move put them back in front. BBHC again fought back hard and again, after several chances, James Baldwin deflected a cross past the West Hampstead keeper, who had been wrong-footed by the move.
The game was in the balance but with 15 minutes left West Hampstead scored with another slick move. BBHC had not conceded any short corners in the first half but had given four away in the second and with the last of these West Hampstead flicked the ball high and Kevin King, who was on the goal line, could only deflect the ball into the roof of the net. BBHC at 4:2 behind never gave up but committed more and more players forward leaving themselves exposed at the back which West Hampstead capitalised on with two late, break-away goals, leaving the final score 6:2 to a strong West Hampstead side.
BBHC are at home to bottom of the division City of Portsmouth this Saturday.

2nd XI 3 - 0 Holcombe 3A (H)
Having strung an impressive 7 wins together in the league, Holcombe were
up challenging for the title before this game, but met a confident
BBHC side that hadn't lost at home since the end of the 2005/06 season.
As appears to be the trend against the better sides, BBHC brought their 'A' game along and began to dominate the play. Holcombe were under sustained pressure and were behind mid-way through the first half as Sam Ashenden popped up unmarked in the D to slide the ball between the legs of Holcombe's number 1. The away side fought to get back into the game, but never really created any telling opportunities and struggled to get through the hard-working BBHC midfield.
The home side were prepared for a backlash in the second half, but as they were so prepared, it didn't materialise! Instead, Rob Porter doubled the lead, picking up the pieces as a ball from a set piece found its way to the back post.
Holcombe started to pick up their game and won a few penalty corners, but the one strike that managed to beat the keeper was cleared off the line by David Mason.
BBHC ended the tie, converting a well-worked penalty corner, although Ashenden's strike was deflected before creeping over the line. Adrian "Pingu" Webster was on hand to ensure the umpires knew that the ball was in, sweeping it against the backboard and letting out a manic and somewhat embarrassing celebration. The tapes have been analysed and we can confirm that the goal was indeed Ashenden's. As such, the two goal hero was nominated man of the match and BBHC's 2nd XI remain perched proudly at the top of the division.

3rd XI 1 - 7 Sevenoaks Shadows (A)
BBHC 3rd XI got up ridiculously early on Saturday morning for a trip
down to Sevenoaks to play the Shadows. The first meeting between these
team was a niggly affair that ended in a 5-5 thriller.
The fitrst 10 minutes saw BBHC pinned back with the experiened Shadows having several good oppotunities. However, BBHC surprised the hosts with a decisive move of their own thanks to a fine counterattack. A clinical passing move from the back, down the right hand side, saw the ball transferred from Andrei Mendis to Andy Galbraith, then from John White to Allan "Chuckie" Sains . Chuckie's tantallising close control allowed him to drive into the D and strike a rising drive over the the onrushing keeper and high inside the left hand-side netting!
Sevenoaks continued to play good hockey and create chances and nearly equalled the score on several occassions but it was BBHC who almost grabbed the next goal when Mark Pellat rode several challenges and slotted the ball home.... but only as the whistle blew to award a short corner.
Shadows took this as a wake up call and picked up their play another notch and fired home 3 goals before the half time whistle.
The second half saw Shadows quickly out the starting blocks and further extend their lead . BBHC with nothing to lose chucked men forward but this allowed the opposition too much space for the long ball and BBHC were caught out a further 3 goals before the final whistle.
Final score, a 7-1 loss. A much more committed performance than previous weeks though leaving BBHC hopeful for next weeks' home game versus Cliftonville.

5th XI 2 - 4 Canterbury Griffins (H)
The number of goals in this return fixture was identical to the number
in the early part of the season, but on this occasion were not equally
distributed. The home side had the better of the early exchanges with
the visitors defence having difficulty in clearing the ball from their
half, often being caught in possession and losing the ball. A number
of chances were created but not taken, until debutante Harpal Kalsi
struck a firm cross into the 'D' to be deflected to the back of the
net by Jamie Saunders.
BBHC pressed forward in an endeavour to increase their lead, but were thwarted by solid defenders who used their experience to break down the attacks and gradually Canterbury fought their way back into the game. The result of this was the equalising of the scores when a well struck cross was neatly deflected into the roof of the net giving the goal keeper no chance. The visitors then took the lead when the BBHC defence failed to fully cover a long through ball which an alert forward tapped into the net.
Although trailing at half time, the BBHC mood was positive and the team tried to force further attacks after the break. Canterbury in turn, also started to play in a more attacking manner which led to a fluid game, although the experience of the Canterbury players meant that they seemed to be getting the better of the exchanges an won a number of penalty corners. Most were comfortably dealt with by the defence, James Breaker in goal stopping a number of shots, but eventually the pressure led to the visitors extending their lead to two goals. A further increase in the lead came when the Canterbury winger latched on to a cross which reached the back of the net via the inside of the post.
Despite the three goal deficit, BBHC continued to press forward and managed to reduce the Canterbury lead when a well placed cross from Jamie Saunders was slotted home by Udi Jayasuriya.. With only a few minutes left, no further improvement of the score line was made, but despite the defeat the game proved most enjoyable.

6th XI 2 - 4 Old Bordenians 6th XI (H)
Old Bordenians visited BBHC for this home fixture.
An open game saw Old Bordenians take an early lead before BBHC responded
with two quick goals, O.B's hit back though just before half time as
BBHC looked to further extend their lead.
BBHC set out from the start of the secnd half and as they pushed more
and more men forward in search of that winning goal BBHC were twice caught
out on the break.
Final score 2 - 4.

Veterans 1 - 6 Wallington (H)
This week we hosted Wallington - one of the fixtures you look out for
when you first view the fixture list. Wallington have four distinctive
features. The first is that they are (in your correspondent's opinion)
head and shoulders the best team we play against. They have skillful
players in all positions, and for this they are to be applauded. The
second is that they have a deserved reputation for systematically pressurising
umpires. This cannot be condoned, and yet has continued unabated for
as many years as I have been playing against them, and this game was
no exception. The third is that they operate a defensive none-shall-pass
ethos. In itself we cannot criticise this approach, for we adopt it
ourselves, but I like to think that BBHC players do it is a style mindful
that people might like to get to work on the following Monday. We block
if we have to. We obstruct. Wallington will happily hack, scythe and
assault with impunity. The physical well-being of opposition members
is of no consequence as long as a goal is not scored. Again, I have
seen this in Wallington for a decade, and this game was no exception.
The fourth is that as threatening, rude and malicious as they are on
the pitch, they are very good and friendly in the bar - an incongruity
I have never reconciled. Does anyone like playing against them? The
answer clearly is yes, and no.
They murdered us on this occasion. It is true we did not have our strongest side out, but it was not weak by any means. The game was memorable as far as we were concerned for only three incidents. The first was a penalty rightly awarded in our favour (a foot on the line from Roy's shot, not a contentious decision, but nonetheless predictably contended by Wallington). For the first time in years Arthur Davies ran the full length of the pitch, this time in order to grab the ball and take responsibility for the flick, which he dispatched clinically before anyone had a chance to say 'bet-you-ten-to-one-he-misses-it'. This was the only chink of light anyone in a BBHC shirt saw all afternoon. The second incident was an appalling assault from behind, when one of our players (who would prefer to remain nameless) was intentionally hooked when clean through. It is bad enough when one's stick is hooked. It is worse when it involves an ankle or knee. On this occasion our player (running at full speed) had an opposition stick thrust between his legs, stick then lifted soundly northwards and pulled backwards robustly, causing material damage to genitalia. Wallington would argue that since a goal was not scored, this was appropriate roughness. Our scrotum-violated player might hold differing, and strong, views on the subject. The incident was hallmarked by the level of poise and decorum maintained by the victim after this genuinely vicious attack, and everyone agreed about the level of self-control he kept. The fact that while he was still down, and while he was barely audibly muttering profanities (clutching as much self-control and bits of scrotum that he could muster) his assailant chose to show his concern by threatening to dent our player's head with a second menacing assault tells you everything you need to know about the way Wallington play hockey.
The game resumed with a free hit to Wallington, though your correspondent is at a loss to know why a second penalty was not awarded. Sportingly Wallington conceded possession by putting the ball out of play. Even with swollen testes a man can spot quality irony.
The third incident was an own goal, scored by Francis. Those with a working knowledge of the rules will know that you cannot score an own goal in hockey - but Francis did. A Wallington youth reached our goal line inside the D and pulled it back towards the penalty spot, whereupon Francis (trying to put the ball out of play) smacked it smartly into our goal with clinical precision. There was some dispute about whether a goal should be awarded, since the Wallington youth had actually propelled the ball more towards his own goal than ours (indeed it now occurs that an argument might have been cited that in this case the goal should be awarded to us) but Colin (who understands more rules than anyone else) adjudged against us. So there we have it. A difficult game. They scored more than half a dozen. We scored fewer than two. Hmmm.
The Morris went to Graeme in goal. and this is right. The score would have been in double figures without his heroics. Two Dorises were awarded. One went to Arthur for taking a penalty without reference to the captain, and for hitting the ball of the pitch in a fit of pique. The second went to your correspondent for gently whimpering the the face of unexpected castration. Hmmm.
Thanks are due to Koki and Jagi for providing fantastic food. We try to make an effort against Wallington, since they entertain so well at their place. Perhaps we could just dispense with the game in future. Also thanks to Colin whose experienced umpiring controlled a very difficult and fractious game very well.
Next week we are away to Addiscombe, against whom we traditionally do well. Please confirm availability to Jagi if you have not already done so.

U16 Girls 1 - 0 Herne Bay (H)
BBHC's U16 Girls welcomed the visiting Herne Bay side on a chilly Sunday
lunchtime.
Both teams started off well with some good flowing play. The best of the early chances fell to BBHC with good attacking play from Leah Kember-Hollands and Sorcha Crowley but the Herne Bay keeper was never challenged. Herne Bay caught BBHC out on the counterattack on several occassions but this was dealt with efficiently by Erin Courtney, Ellie Kember-Hollands and Emma Miles at the back.
Midway through the first half, BBHC had the visitors pinned back in their D for a spell of 5 minutes, winning short corner after short corner. Despite the well-worked, varied routines, some good defending prevented BBHC from taking the lead.
A goal finally came though after some work down the right saw Crowley isolate the keeper and slip the ball across the goal to set up Annie Hawes to sweep home. Herne Bay had the upper hand for the remainder of the half by winning several short corners of their own before the half time whistle blew.
BBHC pushed back to start the second half and were soon testing the Herrne Bay defence but in this half the play was much more open, with Herne Bay nearly catching out the BBHC on several occasions. Despite good play and several short corners for both the home and away sides, neither team could grab a goal. BBHC came closest though but the finishing touch was constantly lacking.
A good team performance though and a well deserved 3 points.

1st XI 2 - 3 Henley (H)
BBHC played Henley last Saturday with the final score being the reversal
of the score from the first half of the season. BBHC came out of the
blocks firing and forced Henley onto the back foot. BBHC took the lead
half way through the first half with a goal mouth scramble ending with
the ball falling to Dan Lucas, who cooly slotted the ball home.
BBHC kept the pressure up and were rewarded with a second when a broken down short corner was excellently converted by Kevin King, as he swivelled on the spot with the ball on the end of his stick and found the gap between the post and the diving keeper. BBHC were good for their 2-0 half time score line and this could have been even greater.
After the break, BBHC were caught napping as Henley got a scrappy goal back only seconds into the second half. BBHC still looked comfortable if a little nervous and a sloppy hit out of defence handed Henley a one on one with the BBHC keeper, which was duly accepted to level the scores.
The home side scorned several clear chances to take the points before being punished with minutes to go as Henley tipped a short corner over the diving BBHC keeper. Final score was 3:2 to Henley. This Saturday BBHC are away to West Hampstead.

2nd XI 1 - 1 Brighton and Hove (A)
This eagerly-awaited, top-of-the-table clash did not disappoint in terms
of drama, although the away side could have done with the score line
being a little more reflective of the game.
BBHC had avoided major traffic problems to get to Brighton with plenty of time, and they began to focus on the task ahead. Nothing could have prepared them for the whirlwind start though, the home side came flying out of the blocks and within seconds had won and converted a penalty corner. BBHC hadn't even touched the ball but found themselves behind. After this initial setback the Bs rallied hard and managed to win themselves a penalty stroke, the perfect opportunity to get back into the game. Unfortunately, and not for the first time this season, Ashby failed to convert as he sent the flick wide of the left post. Before long BBHC had found the backboard, but a strange umpiring decision pulled play back to award a penalty corner...
Despite going in at half time a goal down, the away side were confident that more opportunities would present themselves. And soon after the break a great solo effort from David Humber levelled the scores. The home side were now hanging on as the Bs camped out in their half of the pitch. A good goalkeeping performance kept Brighton in the game, as BBHC were unable to make the possession and countless penalty corners count. The Bs knew it wasn't going to be their day when late on a Brighton defender deflected an Ashby effort away from high on the goal line.
On paper a draw away at Brighton is a good result, but the Bs will be disappointed that they haven't stretched their lead at the top of the league.
Man of the Match this week went to little David Humber - some good runs, excellent work rate and a well taken goal were amongst the reasons. Another good test next week as Holcombe come to visit.

3rd XI 1 - 2 Gore Court (H)
Two BBHC teams turned up for the 3rd XI game vs Gore Court on Saturday.
One side who played some great hockey and moved the ball round with
ease,
patiently building up attacks from the back and testing the Gore Court
defence . The other side unfortunately did not play as well and the
less said about this side the better.
The good BBHC started off the game and played well for the first 15 minutes. Some slack marking though saw a man free at the top of the BBHC "D" and his shot low into the corner squirmed underneath the unsighted Jim Jackson in goal.
Unfortunately, conceding this goal saw the dark side come out. From this moment on BBHC failed to perform as they can, the less said about this the better. BBHc managed to hold out though until half time with conceeding more.
After a stern talking to at half time by captain (and man of the match) Adrian Prong, BBHC came out looking to fight their way back into the game. Unfortunately the dark side continued to play and, midway through the half, were punished from a short corner. It wasn't until the last five minutes that BBHC finally began to perform as everything was chucked at Gore Court but only a consolation goal was scrambled home by Prong, minutes before the final whistle.

5th XI P - P Old Bordenians (H)

failed to arrive at the game, this game was postponed and a friendly
played instead.

Men's Reports
1st XI 4 - 8 Gore Court 1st XI (A)
BBHC's Men's first team were away at Gore Court this week for the first
league game back after the Christmas break.
After chances at both ends, BBHC were the first to strike with Dan Lucas slipping home a chance deflected to him by Jamie Perfitt. Gore Court hit back quickly winning two short corners in quick succession, the first hit the crossbar but the second, which was a quick flick, went in.
BBHC took the lead again with a swift counter-attack which, with three quick passes, saw Jamie Perfitt cross to Peter Stanley who slotted the ball past the approaching keeper. Another flicked short corner saw Gore Court draw level again just before the half time whistle, ending a very even half.
The second half started with BBHC conceding two goals very quickly after the restart. However, the visitors kept their spirits high and fought back winning a couple of short corners - Kevin King only just failed to convert the first but cleanly beat the keeper with the second.
As BBHC pushed for the equaliser, Gore Court struck twice to push the lead to 6:3. Sam Ashenden dribbled into the D and after riding a couple of tackles slid the ball under the keeper. BBHC pushed again but as their fitness waned, Gore Court scored twice more making them the rather flattering 8:4 winners. Next week BBHC entertain Henley.
[Peter Stanley]
2nd XI 7 - 2 Eastbourne 3rd XI (H)
A confident start to the second half of the season puts the Bs 3 points
clear at the top of the Kent/Sussex Open Div 1.
BBHC didn't have it all their own way and spent most of the first half
brushing away the cobwebs of the long Christmas break. The home side's
lead was twice pegged back as Eastbourne's young attackers countered
quickly after long spells of defending. At half time the scores were
level at 2-2.
The Bs were fired up in the second half and scored three quick goals
to effectively end the tie. Midfield and attack began to express themselves
much better as the confidence grew, with a notable display from Man
of the Match Mark Ashby. Besides scoring 4 goals, Ashby showed some
clever touches and good awareness to ensure he was always one step
ahead of his defender.
[Mike Leigh]
3rd XI 2 - 3 Ashford 3rd XI (A)
After a disappointing few games before the Christmas break, BBHC's Men's
3rd XI were hoping that the new year would see an improvement in form
and
some much needed
points. This Saturday they travelled to bottom-of-the-table Ashford.
Ashford had the better of the early exchanges nearly catching the BBHC defence out on several attacks but failed to test Jim Jackson in goal. A rocket of a half volley that nearly broke the cross bar was their best effort.
BBHC soon began to find their feet but it was Ashford who grabbed the lead. A short corner powered into the bottom corner passed Dave King on the line. BBHC continued to fight and grabbed a goal back 5 minutes before half time after Raju Mathoroo slotted home from close range.
The second half started at a frantic pace with both teams looking for that early goal. It was 10 minutes into he half when Ashford again took the lead after Ashford won a controversial short corner, which was duly converted.
BBHC pushed men forward in a hope of finding their way back into the game. This left the BBHC defence stretched at times and Ashford managed to win another short corner, again converted.
With 5 minutes remaining BBHC managed to convert a short corner of their own, powered home by Andy Humber but this was not enough with Ashford claiming all 3 points.

Colts' Report
U16 Boys 2 - 1 Herne Bay (H)
A strong Herne Bay side visited BBHC for this fixture and, after a positive
pre-Christmas performance against BromBecks everyone was expectant.
The first 10 minutes saw Herne Bay on top putting the BBHC defence under pressure. At times BBHC struggled to put into place what was practised and work the ball out of their half. However, after 15 minutes a counter attack saw them break away and some good work from Blake set up Jamie Saunders with an open goal.
Herne Bay kept their heads and continued with the pressure but BBHC’s confidence was growing seeing more moves put together. It was another break away that saw BBHC double their lead with Gareth Jones powering the ball between the keepers legs from the top of the D.
The second half saw Herne Bay come out just as strong pinning BBHC back for large periods of play. They found their way back into the game after following up on a short corner and flicking it passed James Isteed in goal.
The last 15 minutes saw BBHC defence stand solid though and despite several near misses hang on to take all 3 points.
[Alex Webster]
U16 Girl 0 - 1 Bromley & Beckenham (A)
U16 Girl’s travelled to Brom/Becks for their league game, after a long
break for Christmas. The game started fast and furious, with BBHC having more
opportunities
and most of the play, however they could not convert.
The second half was as entertaining as the first. BBHC pushed hard by Leah Kember-Hollands and Sorcha Crowley with some wonderful attacking play and held their own with great defending by Ellie Kember-Hollands, Erin Courntney , Lauren Frankis and Emma Camp, but to no avail. BromBecks gained a late short corner in the last two minutes to score.
A great game to watch with end to end play
