Sunday 3rd April:
2nd XI 2-3 University of Kent 1st XI (A)
(Price [FG], Sains [FG])

(Here follows a "short" novella from 3rd XI stalwart, Adrian Prong. Full stops and paragraphing added by Andrei Mendis)
A recently rejuvenated BBHC Men's 3rd XI entered their final league game of the season in the knowledge that only a win against the Kent Premier B champions HSBC would save them from possible demotion to the Premier C league.

In the brilliant sunshine, HSBC started at a high tempo. They put immediate pressure on the BBHC defence, who managed to stave of the initial danger to allow their central midfield to start taking control of the game. A quick counter-attack and a superb turn by Andy "Goals" Galbraith saw his deft shot saved by the HSBC goalie. This led to a BBHC penalty corner and then a penalty flick, neither of which were converted.

Once again via a quick, high-tempo, passing move, HSBC reasserted their initial pressure. This was defended and broken down with another precise BBHC counter-attack. Some ragged defending by HSBC, allowed a free hit to be taken quickly by Andy Franklin and was expertly deflected home by Galbraith, the HSBC defence left wrong-footed. 1-0 to BBHC, the 1st half continued with HSBC's speedy passing while BBHC slowly worked up their own passing game.

This allowed further penalty corner conversions by Andy Tither and David Humber. It was Humber's first 3rd XI goal in only his second appearance and it was memorable. It came from a reverse-stick strike, a chip of the ball over the HSBC goalie to close the first half.

From the start of the 2nd half, HSBC had consolidated and came out from the pushback fully intent on scoring. Thanks to lax concentration in the BBHC defence, HSBC worked a number of passes after a poor clearance to score 3-1. From the restart, BBHC had an excellent passage of concise passing which brought the opportunity for Galbraith to score again to make it 4-1.

HSBC continued to press to close the gap, and were rewarded when a slightly mis-hit penalty corner wrong-footed the BBHC goalie and went in cleanly through his pads. Once again BBHC applied themselves to their continued passing game resulting in a high number of squandered chances to kill off any further come back from HSBC. In the last 10 minutes HSBC converted another short corner, though objections were raised - the first shot that had been struck not aimed at the backboard. Deliberation by the officials led to the award of the goal and brought the score to 4-3.

However, BBHC were able to run down the clock by maintaining their passing and movement. A great result for team, which had looked to be down and out of the league yet beat the league winners. Hopefully, wins like this will be more common next season as the Men's 3rd XI look to regain the form of seasons past.

3rd XI
The returns of Dave King and Andy Franklin to the Men’s 3rd XI eased BBHC’s injury woes from the previous week and contributed to an excellent 1st half display in the warm sunshine. The home side played with purpose and confidence, converting their pressure into a goal thanks to a penalty corner goal from Raj Matharoo. Captain Andy Galbraith doubled the lead with an open play goal, finally showing all the hallmarks of his prolific efforts from past seasons. Meanwhile, the visitors found the BB defence holding firm.

The pattern of play continued into the 2nd half and persistent open play manoeuvres saw Matharoo net his second. However, complacency, fatigue and poor concentration started to creep into the BBHC play with 20 minutes to go. A strike from an Anchorians penalty corner was saved by GK Jordan Laws but the ball was not cleared in time and a visiting player slotted the ball in. The initiative was with the opponents as BBHC gave the ball away cheaply. Another short corner goal made it 3-2 and Anchorians pushed for an equaliser as time ran out. Thankfully, BBHC were able to hang on and claim 3 precious points that lift them off the bottom of Kent Open Premier B. Another win in their final match against HSBC should guarantee their survival

The Men's 4th XI took the short trip to Blackheath in need of a win to pull them out of the bottom 2. Having played good hockey since the Christmas break, they had still to start securing the results that their performances deserved. Well warmed up, they took to the pitch and a great flowing movement saw an early goal from Ross Pearman, his first for the season. However, fortunes changed shortly after as Blackheath kneed the ball across the line and the goal was awarded for 1-1. Half time came with no more goals but with BBHC having the upper hand.

A positive half-time talk saw them get back on track with a tight angled deflection from Udi Jayasuriya, followed by a short corner struck by John Gibbard which deflected off a Blackheath player into the back of the goal. The final goal came from a messy short corner which was well recovered by Rob Porter to put Sammy Chana through for the goal. The strong defensive centre of John Gibbard and Darren Storey left Blackheath little opportunity but a couple of harsh short corners lead to a first time strike from one rocketing straight into the roof of the goal and Blackheath were awarded a second. A great performance by all involved and at last the result to match the performance in a 4-2 win

Sunday 20th March:
Kent U16 Boys Cup 2004/05 quarter finals

U16 Boys 2-3 Marden Russets (A)
(Ashenden [PC], J Laws [FG])
See photos of the quarter final >>

With the league fixtures finished, BBHC’s U16 Boys had finished fourth in Pool A and qualified for the Kent U16 Boys Cup with a tie against Pool B winners, Marden. In perhaps their biggest game to date, BBHC showed great spirit in the first half despite conceding a soft goal from a penalty corner early in the 1st half. The score remained 1-0 with Marden pushing for more with some great passing hockey through the middle of the pitch, led by their diminutive and skilful playmaker. However, Lee Humber, Sam Ashenden, Andrew Mendl and Alfie Johnson held firm with some solid defending, while Tom Golding in goal made some vital saves. BBHC were able to fashion many chances themselves but the through passes from Ashenden and Vince Moore went unconverted. They sorely missed the movement of their first choice strike force.

The second half began as badly as the first, with another penalty corner goal from their no 8. The game threatened to run away from BBHC, when possession was repeatedly surrendered far too easily and invited further Marden offensives. However, the BBHC spirit carried them through. Some BBHC pressure in the home-side’s D was converted in style by Jordan Laws, angling his stick to send a rebound over the grounded keeper with a deft slap-shot. 5 minutes later, it was a case of “short corner perfection” when Ashenden and Moore executed a textbook conversion from a set play, with Ashenden slapping the ball home following a neat 1-2. Unfortunately, a minute later, BBHC were caught napping as they pushed for the winner, a Marden midfielder made a dazzling 50 yard run and calmly slotted the winner home. This made the final 10 minutes a frantic affair but the home side held for a deserved win. However, BBHC be proud of their efforts this season and the squad’s future together looks bright.

12th March 2005

Men
1st XI 3-2 Mid-Sussex (A)
2nd XI 5-0 Herne Bay 3rd XI (H)
3rd XI 1-4 Sevenoaks 4th XI (A)
4th XI 2-3 Holcombe 4A (H)
5th XI vs Deal (A) - game conceded by BBHC
6th XI 0-5 Sevenoaks (H)

Low on morale and on regular players, BBHC's Men's 3rd XI handed debuts to Darren Storey and Rob Porter.in this potentially tough encounter. The game started badly as a poorly cleared Sevenoaks penalty corner was tapped home by the hosts after 2 minutes. Next, Andrei Mendis had to leave the field with blood pouring from his right hand after he was caught by a Sevenoaks stick while making a regulation tackle. A compound fracture to his thumb required visits to a couple of West Kent's hospitals! Down to 10 men, BBHC re-grouped and held on but the home side sneaked a goal in before half time. Rob Porter pulled one back early in the second half with a field goal, then some great BBHC pressure saw Mark Rochford hit the post. However, the bad luck that has blighted their season struck again as Rochford succumbed to a groin strain, and Sevenoaks were able to convert their only two 2nd half shots against the 9 men. 2 games remain, with a mathematical possibility of survival in Kent Open Premier B, but other results would need to go their way.

Harrod UK Men's Trophy: Quarter Finals (Sunday 13th March)
1st XI 1-4 Trojans (H)
(Lucas [FG])

The game started out badly for BBHC as a trademark Pete Stanley charge down the right wing was stopped by the Trojans left back, seeking to assert himself. Stanley went flying and landed awkwardly, necessitating a trip to Darent Valley Hospital. A broken thumb was the worst of his injuries. His boss, Mo, was a watching from the sidelines, so no sick-note required...?

The B's made light of this and took advantage of some static Trojans defending. As the visitors looked for a decision from the umpire, Ram Kalsi tapped the ball across the goal for Dan Lucas to carry over the line. Further BBHC possession went unrewarded, especially with some outstanding team-play from every home player. Meanwhile Trojans fashioned the more clear-cut chances in open play yet had nobody to apply the finishing touch. Lee Cook in goal made a string of fine saves from several penalty corner drag flicks.

However, 10 minutes into the 2nd half, the Trojans' set-piece team finally got it right with a drag-flick into the top left corner of Cook's goal. BBHC started to lose their way as team spirit soured slightly and teamwork dropped as individuals tried to dribble the ball a step too far, conceding possession cheaply. 3 quick field goals cemented the south-coast team's position and a well-deserved place in the Semi-Ffinals, while BBHC were left to rue what might have been.

Nevertheless, this was a great Cup-run for BBHC and provided player-coach Henrico Murphy some reward for his efforts this season. Murphy departs these shores for his native South Africa now, as he looks forward to enjoying a summer in the Southern hemisphere after his last few years enduring the winters of the North!

Good luck for the future, Henrico, and thanks very much for your work!

Yet again BBHC U16 started well – holding the first half against Maidstone to two goals. BBHC fought hard but the well organised Maidstone forwards converted their chances.

5th March 2005

Men
1st XI 7-1 Horsham (H)
(Ashby 3 [3FG], D Cole [FG], K King 2 [2FG], Murphy [FG])
2nd XI 0-1 New Beccehamians (A)
3rd XI 0-3 King's College London 2nd XI (H)
4th XI - no game
5th XI 2-3 Sevenoaks (H)
(D Humber 2 [FG, PC])
6th XI vs Gore Court (H) - Game cancelled due to dangerous travelling conditions for Gore Court.

A blistering start by BBHC's Men's 1st XI saw them go 3-0 up inside 10 minutes. Some fine work by the midfield was finished off by Mark Ashby who scored the first 3 goals. Slowly Horsham came back into the game but the BBHC defence held firm. Kevin King scored a tap in just before half time and then after the break BBHC scored 3 more from Henrico Murphy, Dave Cole and Kevin King. Horsham scored a late consolation but it was BBHC's day with a fine 7-1 victory which should give the team confidence for their cup quarter final against Trojans on Sunday 13th March.

Relegation looks to be a real prospect for BBHC’s Men’s 3rd XI as they lost to fellow strugglers, King’s College London. Thanks to the cancellation of their 1st XI’s fixture due to weather, the away side were able to field a far stronger side than normal and hence were able to control the game. The students went into half-time with a 1-0 advantage thanks to a penalty corner goal. Some indecisive defending in the second half led to 2 more goals for King’s. Yet BBHC had plenty of chances to score from numerous penalty corners and were left to rue missed opportunities, again. Three difficult games remain to be played but every point remains valuable.

The youngsters of BBHC's Men's 5th XI playing their toughest game to date in the snow against a very experienced Sevenoaks side, the score line show's how far some of the youth of the club have come along. With Sevenoaks taking the lead half way through the first half through a sloppy penalty corner, it was up to BB to find their level and bring the game back to the visitors. A free-hit just out side the D by Davind Mason was deflected in by Dave Humber for the first BB goal. With the scores at 1-1 at the break, BB struggled to find their feet again and had to work hard to keep the visitors out of the D. However, a quick counter-attack across the D saw Sevenoaks take the lead again. the BB boys were then awarded a short corner and Dave Humber managed to convert a soft push-in with a reverse-stick strike to bring the game level once again. With 10 minutes to go, a short corner was awarded to Sevenoaks. This was poorly defended by BBHC and saw the visitors take the points. Overall, though, a Well played game by all concerned.

26th February 2005

Men
1st XI 2-4 Maidstone (A)
(Ashby [FG], Stanley [PC])
5th XI 2-1 Marden Russets (A)
(N Chana [FG], S Porter [FG])

BBHC's Men's 1st XI travelled to promotion hopefuls Maidstone amidst fears that the game would be cancelled following a flurry of snow. Despite a cold start, the home team were quick to take the advantage with a penalty stroke awarded within the 1st five mins. Another goal followed shortly after, leaving Lee Cook in goal as a mere bystander. BB fought back immediately with Mark Ashby scoring with a reverse-stick sweep, following a goal mouth scramble. The home team promptly scored their 3rd goal, leaving the visitors to climb a mountain. The deficit was nearly reduced before half time, captain Dan Lucas cruelly having a fine shot ruled out for an earlier altercation.

Following the half time break, BB score their second, with Peter Stanley striking the ball in at a short corner following good work from Kevin King. It was, however, the home team who scored another goal to kill of the game. Although more goals were sought after two red card dismissals, the scores could not be brought closer.

The Men's 5th XI players were up for getting an away win against Marden Russets to avenge last week's 4th XI loss against the same club. With only a minute being played and some excellent passing hockey amongst the midfield players saw Steve Porter place a field goal from the top of the D past the keeper's far post to give BBHC the lead. With this vote of early confidence BB pushed throughout the half and played some excellent balls into the D but failed to convert there chances. Marden began to come back into the game and some brave goal keeping by Jordan Laws, including one double save at a penalty corner, maintained the advantage at half time.

After the break, Marden found a new level of fitness and spirit and brought the game to BB's 25 yard line in the second half, thanks to some experienced hockey-heads. With mounting pressure it was only a matter of time before the home side fashioned a breakthrough with only 5 minutes to play, but incontroversial circumstances. Determined not to lose out on the full three points BBHC threw everything at Marden and were rewarded with a winning goal following a goalmouth scramble with just 40 seconds left on the clock - Nav Chana found the back-board from 2 yards out. BBHC were 2-1 winners. Notable performances came from Darren "about time he played 3rd XI" Storey, Steve Porter & David Mason and Ed "The Rock" Andrews.

Harrod UK Men's Trophy: 4th Round (Sunday 27th February)
1st XI 2-2 Tulse Hill & Dulwich (A) - 3-2 after extra time
(Lucas [PC], Murphy [PC]; Golden goal = Ashby [FG])

A chilly Sunday afternoon match in England Hockey’s Harrod UK Men’s Trophy saw BBHC Men’s 1st XI visit Tulse Hill & Dulwich for their 4th round tie. The B’s asserted themselves well in the opening 10 minutes, keeping their opponents from the division above at bay with some patient hockey. Their efforts were rewarded by a well worked penalty corner goal for captain Dan Lucas following a 1-2 with Steve Rudduck. Ravi Chana and his BBHC defence held firm as their hosts searched for an equaliser and failed to convert the few chances that came their way.

Following the half-time break, Henrico Murphy smoothly converted a penalty corner with a low, drag-flick to double the lead. In reply, Tulse Hill increased their work-rate, and were awarded and converted a disputed penalty stroke. BBHC goalkeeper Lee Cook pulled off some fine saves to preserve the away advantage while his team-mates continued to look for more goals as their play changed to a more counter-attacking style. However, they were punished for a lack of concentration with 5 minutes to go as a home forward slotted their equaliser in.

15 minutes of extra time then ensued, with some nervous play from the home team as time wore on. Further BBHC counter-attacks proved fruitless, but perseverance brought home the result. With 1 minute remaining and a penalty stroke contest looming, a Tulse Hill attack had broken down and Rudduck received a pass from his defence 15 metres inside the opposing half. Some good close control and a fine run into the D saw him use all of his experience to draw the ‘keeper the defenders toward him, allowing him to provide square pass for Mark Ashby to tap home the golden goal winner. Needless to say, Ashby disappeared underneath a bundle of jubilant team-mates and supporters!

The Quarter Finals on Sunday 13th March are next for the B’s, with opponents such as Bournemouth, Mansfield, and Hampton in Arden also left in the draw.

Colts
U16 Girls 0-7 Beckenham (H)

After a very cold, snowy start, where Beckenham scored several goals, BBHC started to warmed and settle into the game. However, BBHC had several chances but could not get past the solid Beckenham defence. The away side continued on the attack and continued to score, despite a great effort by BBHC in the terrible weather conditions.

19th February 2005

Men
1st XI 2-3 Sutton Valence (H)
2nd XI 0-1 Old Bordenians (H)
3rd XI 1-2 Alleyn Old Boys 1's (A)
(Chaggar [PC])
4th XI 0-6 Marden Russets (A)
5th XI 5-0 Gillingham Anchorians (H)
6th XI 4-2 Holcombe 6B
(D Davenport [FG], D Humber 3 [3 FG])
Veterans won 5-1

While BBHC Men's 1st XI lost 3-2 to their bogey team, Sutton Valence, the 2nd XI had a tough, top-of-the table encounter at home to Old Bordenians. Although BB played the better hockey, with lots of pressure throughout the 1st half, they were unable to make the most of their chances. OB's scored from a mis-hit shot, wrong-footing the Keeper and making it 1-0 at half time. Although the B's kept the pressure on, they were unable to convert any chance. The away side kept BBHC out with some tight marking at the back and hitting the ball the length of the pitch to relieve pressure.

Ladies
2nd XI 3-3 Blackheath (H)
3rd XI vs Cobdown (H)

Kent Ladies' Plate (Sunday 20th February)
1st XI 2-2 Ashford (H) - 2-3 APS

BBHC Ladies 1st team faced Ashford in the Kent Plate. BBHC camped out in Ashford's 25 for most of the first half and were finally awarded a goal when Emily Chartres took a quick free hit and found Ashleigh Davonport completely unmarked and well positioned to put the ball in the back of the net.

The second half saw Ashford fight back and manage to squeeze a goal in from a well taken short corner. BBHC continued to put pressure on the Ashford defence and were rewarded short corner after short corner but to no avail. It wasn't until Zoe Hubbard put the ball away in open play that BBHC thought they finally had the game in the bag. However Ashford were determined not to lose the game and after being awarded a flick which was converted the game ended 2-2.

No extra time was played and it was down to penalty flicks to decide who was going through to the next round. Coral Jones and Sally Wallace scored their penalties and whilst Nev Hamlett made some good saves, Ashford finally won the penalty round 3-2.

12th February 2005

Men
1st XI 5-1 Tunbridge Wells (H)
(Murphy 4 [2 FG, 2 PC], Rudduck [FG])
2nd XI 3-1 Folkestone 3's (A)
3rd XI 4-4 Holcombe 3B's (H)
(Matharoo 4 [FG, 3 PC])
4th XI 1-2 Wellcome (A)
5th XI vs Maidstone (H) - game conceded by BBHC
6th XI 1-0 Gilligham Anchorians (A)
(Corker [FG])

BBHC Men's 1st XI entertained Tunbridge Wells on a blustery day. With both sides looking for the 3 points to boost survival hopes, this was a do or die game. BB started the brighter with good early pressure. It was just their inability to put away the final shot that spared the visitors. The pressure however was too much to bear when midway through the 1st half, Henrico Murphy scored the 1st of his 4 goals, finishing from a broken down short corner.

The lead was doubled 5 minutes later as Murphy converted from another short corner to put BB 2 ahead. As the 2nd half started, the home team made the most of the strong head wind, and took the game to the visitors. A strong midfield game from David Cole, Ram Kalsi and Pete Stanley ensured Murphy was able to add two more goals either side of a consolation for T Wells. The game was wrapped up in the last 5 minutes with Steve Rudduck tapping home from a yard to complete the scoring. All in all a good performance.

BBHC Men's 3rd XI salvaged another point this week in their bid for survival in Kent Open Premier B in a thriller at Erith School against Holcombe 3B's. Once again, Raj Matharoo led the the BBHC fight in a game that was there for the taking had the home side converted their chances from open play. Possession shifted between the two teams regularly in the opening 20 minutes, with BBHC looking more likely to score, yet Holcombe converted their first penalty corner. Thankfully, Matharoo was on hand to return the favour soon after. The away side scored again from their next penalty corner, thanks to a poor clearance, but Matharoo demonstrated his prowess once more as the scores were levelled for half-time.

Yet another short corner goal 10 minutes later regained the lead for Holcombe but BB pushed for another equaliser with Mark Pickersgill and Matharoo maintaining the fight in midfield. A high-elbowed challenge on Andrei Mendis by the visitor's no. 82 saw him sin-binned and BBHC saw the chance to press home their advantage. However, the visitor's umpire felt he had to even the score and chose to ignore the expletives from the Holcombe players up to that point and yellow-card Pickersgill for foul language. To his credit, Pickersgill took the punishment without protest, and the contest remained finely balanced.

With 7 minutes to go, Matharoo grabbed his hat-trick with a mesmerising run, rounding the defenders as if in slow motion and slotting the ball home from a tight angle to make it 3-3. A home win was still feasible, but the inexperience of young VInce Moore taught him a harsh lesson as he conceded possession cheaply in his own D. This allowed a young Holcombe player to drill home their 4th goal. With a minute left on the clock, however, Matharoo saved the day with another goal from a short corner and a share of the points. Though the Men's 3's were left to rue a great opportunity to pick up 3 points, they can surely take heart from a stronger defensive performance in open play, which will help them inch thier way to safety.

Men
1st XI 3-0 Eastbourne (A)
(Ashby 2 [2 FG], Murphy [FG])
2nd XI 5-1 Burnt Ash 3's (H)
3rd XI 3-3 Wellcome 1's (A)
(Matharoo [PC], V Moore [PC], Pickersgill [FG])
4th XI vs (H) - Game conceded by Biddenden
5th XI 0-4 Old Bordenians (A)
6th XI 7-0 Cobdown (H)

The Men's 1st XI travelled to Eastbourne to pick up some well-deserved points, to move them up to 7th in the table this week. BB took control early in the first half with some fancy work coming form Mark Ashby, who put two clean goals past the keeper. However, mounting pressure from Eastbourne, eventually won them a controversial penalty flick. Lee Cook stood big in the goal and made a spectacular save to keep BB two goals clear. With BB finding their second wind in the game, they pushed forward again and were rewarded with a third goal, this time from player-coach Henrico Murphy. Man of the match was Lee Cook.

Another derby match for BBHC Men's 3rd XI saw a familiar pattern of play develop, with the opposition putting away their chances while the BB boys spurned their's in the 1st half. The well-drilled home side made good use of their possession and were 2-0 up by half-time. A 3rd goal soon after the break would normally have been a terminal sign, yet BBHC mounted a fine come-back. The guile and experience of Raj Matharoo and Mark Pickersgill in central midfield helped to turn the tide. Matharoo drilled home a simple penalty corner routine, then Vince Moore tapped home the 2nd from another short corner. A tense finish was on the cards as BBHC pressed for, and finally clinched, the equaliser. Tej Chaggar's improving form and confidence saw him make a run out to the right wing and drill a firm cross into the D. He found Pickersgill unmarked on the penalty spot and the midfielder made a cool low finish to cap his fine return match from injury. The share of the points edges the 3rd XI away from the relegation zone, however much work remains to be done.

Harrod UK Men's Trophy: 3rd Round (Sunday 6th February)
1st XI 3-0 Brentwood (H)
(Lucas [FG] Rudduck 2 [2 FG])

With the win from Eastbourne fresh in their minds, the Men's 1st XI players took the same tactics to the HA Trophy game against visitors Brentwood. BB played their best hockey for weeks against a strong Essex side and proved that they are back on form following recent results. Team manager Steve Rudduck scored two great goals while captain Dan Lucas slotted in the third to finished the visitors off and move forward to the next round. Player of the weekend goes to Lee Cook For two clean sheets

Next opponents: Tulse Hill & Dulwich (A) on Sunday 27th February.

England Hockey: Men's 2nd XI Trophy: 3rd Round (Sunday 6th February)
2nd XI 2-3 Isca (A)
(Perfitt [FG] P Price [PC])

BBHC Men's 2nd XI made the long trip to Exeter for their 2nd round match in the national 2nd XI Trophy. Solid possession of the ball in the first half gave BBHC confidence to test their west country hosts, with Derren Westbrook and Phil Price working hard in the centre of midfield. This was rewarded by a goal from breakaway move as Allan Sains sent Jamie Perfitt clear to round the 'keeper and slap the ball home.

BBHC extended their lead early in the 2nd half when Price slammed a penalty corner strike into the bottom left corner of the goal. Isca responded by stepping up the pressure and keeping possession in the BB half. Tom Golding in goal and Alfie Johnson helped stem the tide solidly. However, the defence were left flat footed as Isca gained the initative anf pulled 2 goals back. Penalty strokes would have resulted had the score remained level, but some of the experienced Isca heads carved out a fine chance which finally un-did BBHC and sealed the tie with 5 minutes to go.

The game was played in a great spirit by both sides and, despite the loss, the good standard of hockey (and some rigorous team-bulding exercises the night before) made the trip a worthwile one.

6th XI 3-2 Wellcome 4's (A)
D Davenport 2 {2 FG], B Patel [FG]

Herne Bay travelled to Erith School to play BBHC Men's 1st XI in a crucial mid-table battle. Starting brightly, the home team dominated the early proceedings withHenrico Murphy, and Kevin King linking well in midfield. BB were denied an early goal which the Herne Bay 'keeper saved smartly from a Mark Ashby shot.

The 1st goal was not long in coming, following the onslaught. Herne Bay conceded a short corner, and a goal mouth scramble found Ashby on hand to poke in the opening goal. The home team was keen to press on, and, with good flowing passing throughout the team, the 2nd goal was inevitable. Kevin King scoring from a penalty stroke following a foul on Murphy. BB were unlucky not to go in to the 2nd half more goals up, with Pete Stanley causing mayhem down the right wing.

Following the restart - it was the visitors who took the game by the scruff of the neck and scored to quick goals. This spurred BB on, who were anxious to prevent a collapse as per the previous week. Pilling the pressure on, BB were awarded a string of penalty corners - but it was not until the 68th minute that player-manager Steve Rudduck pounced on a loose ball in the D to seal the victory.

The Men's 2nd XI found their encounter with Gore Court's 3rd XI tougher work than in their previous meeting but held out for 5-4 win in Sittingbourne. A two goals by Allan Sains, one by Andy Tither and two by Phil Price brought back the points as BBHC keep pace with Old Bordenians at the top of Kent Open Premier A. Price's net-busting penalty stroke was the pick of the bunch.

A tight local derby saw some stout defending from both BBHC Men's 3rd XI and Rasra, and the game being decided by one lapse. Rasra's high tempo play threatened to overrun the home team at times and BBHC failed to convert any of their numerous 1st half chances. Andy Humber's goal for the away side decided the tie, and also won the family battle with his son Lee, a part of the BBHC defence. An equaliser was on the cards but Andy Galbraith's expertly deflected shot went just over in the 2nd half and summed up BBHC's fortunes this season. However, their improved recent performances should allow them to bolster their final league position.

Kent Ladies' Indoor tournament 2005 (at Gravesend HC, Sunday 30th January)
The women have trained for the last 2 months almost every Monday night and all their hard work paid off by winning the Kent indoor tournament that was kindly put on by Gravesend hockey club which also was endorsed by the Kent hockey federation.

The girls' 1st game was against Gravesend who had a inside knowledge on how we played as for the last two weeks had trained with our women on a Monday so this proved to be a very touchy encounter with BB holding out from a lot of pressure from the Gravesend girls, getting 7 corners in the 18-minute game but failing to convert any. Keeping their composure, BBHC started to create their own chances and finally gained a penalty corner in the last couple of minutes. Old head Julie Somers-Bayley converted from a slipped ball from the top D for a 1-0 win.

Next up was Maidstone - a very young skilful side that could have proved very difficult. However, with some super movement and well thought out drills, Ashleigh Davenport, Sarah Whale and Julie Somers-Bayley all converted their chances. This took BB comfortably onto their 2nd win of the day.

Canterbury were to be the 3rd opponents for the girls. Again, they showed great composure in this game, with fine performance’s coming from Sharon Barnes and Emily Chartres in the central midfield position. Canterbury, who bought a mixed team of experience and youth to this game, had very few chances so a well drilled BB defence of Sally Fairman, Toni, Julie Somers-Bayley and Nev kept them at bay. With goals from Ashleigh Davenport, Sharon Barnes and Emily Chartres that bagged the 3 points for the team.

The last game of the day meant only a draw was needed against Sevenoaks to take the title. The girls set about the game in a professional manner, using the patterns of play they have been practising over the last couple of months. With that in mind, we bombarded the Sevenoaks goal and, after some very good defence from the Sevenoaks team, Sharon Barnes powered her way into the D to slip the ball through the on coming goalkeeper's legs. After going 1-0 up, the girls had to withstand some pressure from the very fast and skilful Sevenoaks forwards. So BB Goalkeeper Nev had to be at her best. She didn’t shirk the responsibility, with some fine saves to let BB run out 1-0 winners. This gave them a played 4 - won 4 total. All in all a very good day for the club's current top team.

Just also to mention three other girls who, unfortunately, could not take part in this tournament but made all the training that was put in before Sunday.

Georgina Smith (breaking a foot how inconsiderate)
Coral (Jones?) Armstrong (just being blonde and forgetting she had a golf match)
Sarah Brine (studying)

Colts (Sunday 30th January)
U16 Boys 2-0 Holcombe (H)
( V Moore [FG, PC])

A stout performance by BBHC's U16 Boys ends their league programme on a high, with an unbeaten home record. .This almost guarantees them a place in the top 4 finish in their pool and a place in the Cup knockout stage - likely opponents are Bromley or Canterbury.

The first half proved a tight affair with an even split of possession and both sides creating numeous chances in the 1st half. Tom Golding in goal and Steven Mason excelled in the BBHC defence, and all retained their focus as a Holcombe penalty stroke was down-graded to a penalty corner early in the 2nd half. Golding kept out some testing shots before the deadlock was finally broken.

Some inspired play to the left of the away side's D by Vince Moore, who dazzled them with his stick skills along the by-line before slotting the ball home. Soon after, Moore was on hand to follow-up his own penalty corner strike with a tap-in. A penalty stroke save by Golding finally dispirited Holcombe and BBHC maintained their unbeaten home record with a clean sheet, at last.

Steven Mason was voted Man-of-the-Match by the players and the coach.

Men
1st XI 1-3 Worthing (A)
(Murphy [PC])
2nd XI 4-1 Canterbury Millers (H)
(Perfitt [FG], Tither [FG], Sains [FG], Alex Webster [PC]
3rd XI 5-4 Guru Nanak (A)
(Chaggar [FG], L Humber [PC], Matharoo [PC], V Moore [FG], Rochford [FG])
4th XI 0-1 UMDS (H)
5th XI 11-2 Bromley (A)
6th XI 1-3 Ashford (H)

BBHC Men's 1st XI BBHC travelled to 2nd place Worthing needing 3 valuable points. Starting brightly the visitors took the game to the hosts, Lucas hitting the post when it seemed easier to score! The deadlock, however was broken mid way through the first halt, Henrico Murphy scoring from a short corner after good work by Pete Stanley. This should have signalled the start of the onslaught, however BB could not put away their chances. This spurred the home team on and a quick equaliser was scored early in the 2nd half only for 2 more quick goals to be added. The 1's entertain Herne Bay at home next week, a crucial 6 pointer for both teams!

The Men's 2nd XI emerged from their mid-season stutter with a win against Canterbury Millers. Alex Webster's penalty corner strike crept in to ease the home-side's fears, then captain Andy Tither tapped in the 2nd and Jamie Perfitt made it 3. The visitors grabbed a deserved consolation goal late in the 2nd half but Allan Sains sealed the win after a swift move when play resumed. BBHC could easily have doubled their goal tally as they wasted numerous chances. However, the result sets them back on track and keeps them in 2nd place in the league.

A hard fought game started out badly for BBHC Men's 3rd XI as they went 2-0 down after 15 minutes. However, some patient play yielded a penalty corner goal for Raj Matharoo. Some excellent team play then yielded a goal for Tej Chaggar. A Lee Humber penalty corner goal, his first for the team, gave BBHC the lead and fueled their growing confidence. The home side equallised 10 minutes into the 2nd half, however, some great work by Chaggar and Vince Moore led to an easy tap in for Moore to open his 3rd XI account. A superb passing move was then rounded off by an expertly slapped goal for Mark Rochford, and proved too much for the home side despite a goal for them in the dying minutes. This win demonstrated the potential of the team and should give them further impetus to fight their way further up the table.

Ladies
1st XI 1-2 Burnt Ash (A)
(Augustin [PC])
2nd XI vs Canterbury 2A (H) - Postponed
3rd XI vs Westgate (H)

After two good wins following the Christmas break, BBHC Ladies' 1st XI went to face Burnt Ash at Mayplace with renewed confidence. An early goal from the local rivals, however, put BBHC on the back foot and they went in to the break 1-0 down. BBHC picked up their game in the second half and pressed the Burnt Ash defence. There were some near misses with Ashleigh Davenport hitting the post and Julie Bayley putting a shot wide by a whisker. Burnt Ash defended well and during a counter attack managed to put another one in the back of the net putting them 2-0 up. BBHC fought back and finally found their form with Jane Augustin converting a short corner with a superb first time strike. BBHC continued to press Burnt Ash but their efforts came too late as Burnt Ash ran out 2-1 winners.

Men
1st XI 3-3 Ashford (H)
(Bradley [FG], Murphy [FG], Stanley [PC])
2nd XI 2-2 Marden Russets (A)
3rd XI 2-2 Canterbury VA's (H)
(Galbraith [FG], D King [FG])
4th XI 0-2 Gravesend (A)
5th XI 0-4 Maidstone (H)
6th XI 1-3 New Beccehamians (A)

BBHC Men's 1st XI entertained visitors Ashford at Mayplace. Following the 2-2 draw the previous week, the Home team were keen to get off to the best possible start. High-flying Ashford had other ideas. Catching the BB defence napping, the visitors went ahead twice in the first 10 minutes, beating Cook in goal with two well worked short corners. The third was not long incoming either, following a break down in midfield Ashford found themselves 3-0 up!

This served as a warning call to the home team, and the fight back ensued. Following a broken down attacking move, Pete Stanley was able to find the net from the resulting short corner. This spurred BBHC on, subsequent efforts were well saved from the Ashford GK from Lucas and Ashby. As the first half went on, BB managed to find goal number 2, Henrico Murphy making one of his customary dribbles into the D to beat the Keeper with a great shot.

Sensing there was still something to play for in the game, BBHC went on the attack in the second half setting up camp in Ashford's half. The return of David Cole to the team added extra impetus as the home team searched for the equalizer. With 10 minutes to go, Bradley, impressing again at sweeper popped up to snatch a well deserved point. In truth, the home team were unfortunate not to add a 4th goal with Wheeler and Ashby coming close. It was left however for BBHC to rue the opening 20 minutes of the game. How different the result could have been.

The BBHC Men's 3rd XI started brightly thanks to some fine work on his debut by U14 Boys' captain Joe Brown. A fine cross gave the "bionic" Dave King a simple tap-in. Unfortunately, Canterbury soon drew level thanks to a mis-hit shot and a freak bobble. The outstanding John Gibbard steadied the ship with some fine defensive work, allowing BBHC to play some good team hockey. BBHC continued their search for the equaliser but a lapse of concentration saw the away side take the lead with 15 mins left. This led to some frantic and heated play, but resulted in a Matt Thurlow free-hit being deftly deflected home by Andy Galbraith and giving BBHC a share of the spoils. An improved performance by the lads.

With BBHC men's 4 1XI seeing there lowest squad members for weeks. It was time to call in the reserves, With an un-experience Ed Andrews taking the No 1 spot of "acting" goal-keeper. With 15 minutes of warm up Ed was ready to take on the world unfortunately. Gravesend took the advantage and slotted two fine goals pass the keeper, Well done to all the players that turned out. man of the match Ed Andrews.

Ladies
1st XI 1-0 St Albans 3's (A)
(A Davenport [FG])

The jubilant BBHC Ladies' 1st XI travelled to St Albans at the weekend, with one intention, to win and try to move up 2-3 places in the league. The girls were missing some key regular's for various reasons, but nevertheless we were there to get the 3 points. It has to be said that the game was not one of our better performances. The pitch was very much not to our liking. We started off very shaky and it took the BBHC ladies a good 20 minutes to settle into the game.

St Albans have pulled off some good results, and they seemed to be perhaps the more passionate side in the first half. It was 0-0 at half time, and relatively little to trouble the BBHC goalkeeper Nev.

BBHC continued to press and eventually squeezed out a goal from our youngster Ashleigh Davenport "the goal machine". But it was certainly a tense remaining 10 minutes. BBHC then went on to score a second from a Julie Sommers-Bayley penalty corner, which was then disallowed. BBHC dug in deep, and defended their half with everything they had left, and managed to keep the 1-0 win.

BBHC will need to take a few things from that game, if they want to continue the current winning form into next weekend local derby with Burnt Ash. Players of the match were Emily Chartres and Georgina Light.

Colts (Sunday 16th January)
U16 Girls 0-6 Tunbridge Wells (H)
U16 Boys 7-1 Gillingham Anchorians (H)
(Ashenden 2 [FG, PC], S Bennett [FG], Morgan [FG], V Moore [PC, 2FG])

BBHC U16 Girls' lack of experience showed again, with a 6-0 loss at home to Tunbridge Wells. However, the largely U14-aged team can take heart from the present U16 Boys, who came from humble beginnings with man heavy defeats, yet they are blossoming into fine players.

After the long Christmas break BBHC started well, playing on a very bouncy pitch, held Ashford in the first half. Due to Ashford set plays and some unfortunate errors Ashford scored 3 goals, BBHC fought hard to hold the score however ended up losing 6 - 0.

BBHC U16 Boys produced their best performance to date and showed that they had taken on board the lessons from the their run of 3 defeats. The lads played as a unit and showed confidence in their team-mates by assuredly passing the ball around. Some fine right wing work by Dave "Dazie" Humber allowed Ben Morgan to tap in his first goal for BBHC. Some good Anchorians tackling couldn't turn the tide of possession, and Vince Moore's perceptive pass to Sam Ashenden gave him ample time at the top of the D to plant a thunderbolt against the backboard to make it 2-0. Ashenden finished off a well-worked penalty corner with a tap-in, then Moore drilled in a goal from open play from the top of the D before half-time.

Anchorians started to assert themselves in the 2nd half, but a classy run by Moore down the left wing and along the by-line led to him rounding the keeper and coolly slotting home. Scott Bennett tapped home the 6th before Moore deflected a penalty corner strike to get his hat-trick. This result puts BBHC back on track for a top 4 finish in the league.

The players voted Vince Moore as their man-of-the-match. Coach Allan Sains picked Andrew Mendl, for his solid performance in a variety of positions throughout the game.

8th January 2005

Men
1st XI 2-2 Folkestone (A)
2nd XI 2-3 Bexley Invicta (A)
(Sains [FG], Westbrook [FG])
3rd XI 0-3 Blackheath (A)
4th XI 2-0 Canterbury Griffins (H)
(S Chana [FG], R Porter [FG])
5th XI vs Burnt Ash (A) - Game conceded by BBHC
6th XI 2-3 Old Williamsonians (H)

On the restart to the 2nd half of the league campaign, the Men's 1st XI travelled to promotion-hopefuls Folkestone, in keeping with the gale-force winds that spread over the south east this weekend BB feared the worst on Folkestone's notorious carpet astroturf.

Starting brightly the away team took the game to Folkestone creating many chances, Peter Stanley coming close to opening the scoring after fluffing a glorious 1 on 1 opportunity. After 10 minutes of constant pressure, it was the home team who started to reverse the flow and attack the BBHC defence, it was only good keeping from Lee Cook which denied Folkestone taking the lead. BB's resolve was starting to bear results and the home team's frustration was growing - two yellow cards for the home team were shown as tempers boiled. Just before the break Folkestone got their just rewards following some weak defending they took the lead.

A stern half time talking to from Manager Steve Rudduck, bought a more positive BB performance from the start of the 2nd half. This, however, was short-lived as Dean Wheeler found himself yellow carded for a petulant response whilst defending a 16 yard hit out. With Wheeler sidelined BB found themselves 2-0 down, with a cruel deflection off of Myers stick. Instead of the usual collapse, BB had come accustomed to following the 1st half of the season, the visitors took the game to Folkestone. Following fine work from the impressive Ben Bradley, Mark Ashby was able to deflect a great shot into the top corner of the Folkestone net. With 5 minutes to go, BBHC attacked Folkestone. Player Coach, Henrico Murphy combined well with Midfield partner Ram Kalsi to beat the Folkestone Keeper at his near post to make the score 2-2.

In truth, the Men's 1st XI were unfortunate not to take all 3 points, however under the circumstances the point was a fair result.

The Men's 2nd XI suffered their first loss in the league this season against Bexley Invicta. Allan Sains and Derren Westbrook grabbed the home-side's goals, but some jovial umpiring did not help matters. However, U16 captain Alfie Johnson had a great game at left back as the B's paid the price for not converting their chances at the other end.

The Men's 3rd XI matched their top-of-the-league opponents in the first half with a solid display in windy conditions. Youngsters Jordan Laws in goal and Lee Humber showed signs of continued improvement in their defensive duties. However, BBHC could not convert any possession into goals and were punished in the 2nd half as Blackheath proved more creative with 3 goals.

Ladies
1st XI 3-1 Beckenham (H)
( A Davenport 2 [2FG], K Hall [FG])

BBHC Ladies' 1st XI entertained Beckenham this week. Even with the gale-force conditions BBHC still managed to put the wind up Beckenham with some of the best play they have put together all season.

A well-placed free hit from Emily Charters found the stick of Ashleigh Davenport who masterfully deflected into the goal. BB's second came from Karen Hall following fine work from Susie Bear. The score at half time was 2-1 after Beckenham pulled one back, although after halftime Davenport found the back of the net again to make the full time score 3-1, finishing neatly after being put through 1 on 1.

Player of the Match: Ashleigh Davenport.

6th XI 0-1 Sevenoaks (A)

8th Positioned BBHC Men's 1st XI entertained Mid Sussex who were placed 7th. After a lively start from the home team BB piled on the early pressure and were rewarded from a succession of short corners when Mark Ashby cleverly finished after a defensive lapse in the away team's D. The visitors were finding hard to resist the Home team's mounting pressure and were lucky to avoid a bigger deficit going into the half time break. Fine work from David Cole and Ram Kalsi ensured that the home team's lead was stretched after the interval with Dean Wheeler scoring from close range. BB should have wrapped up the 3 points however the away team stepped up a gear and scored from a contested short corner. Mids came on strong in the last 5 minutes and were awarded a Penalty flick in the last 5 minutes which was duly converted. It would have been a different story had BB put away their chances. Local derby next week Vs Blackheath.

It was top against the bottom and the Men's 2nd XI needed a win to keep them at the top of the league. BBHC started strongly with Phil Price scoring from a short corner. From then on BBHC never looked back and dominated the rest of the game winning 7-1 with goals from Ian Cole(3), Alan Saines(2) and Phil Price(2). With solid defending coming from Tom Barnett to hold the away team to just the 1 goal.

The bottom-of-the-table Men's 3rd XI finally turned the corner with a result that backed up their improving form. An early Tej Chaggar settled the nerves, then Raj Matharoo followed up his own short corner strike to score with a tap in. Sevenoaks fought back and took advantage of some hesitant defending to level the score. BBHC were able to match their opponents in midfield, producing some entertaining hockey. However, a smart free hit strike by Chaggar was deflected from just inside the D by Mark Rochford and embarrassed the away defence as it bounced in. A superb move down the right via a drilled 70 yard pass from Andrei Mendis finding Mike Leigh, who crossed for Rochford to finish. Sevenoaks pulled a goal back but some sublime skill by Matharoo made it 5 and the away side's final effort was only a consolation.

The Men's 6th XI acquitted themselves very well but lost out in a game that they should have won at a canter. The home side converted a penalty flick half way through the 1st half but generated their remaining chances thanks to counter-attacks. The main battle was in the middle of the pitch, but some "robust" Sevenoaks defending killed off some of the BB attacks. Scott Bennett, Scott Moore, Conner Morris, Joe Brown and David Humber demonstrated some fine passing triangles, while Sam Cuthbert made timely interceptions and fed Mark Pellat's raids down the right wing. All of this promised much but the boys failed to convert a myriad of chances, aiming their shots straight at the Sevenoaks 'keeper. However, their patient style of passing-hockey will bear fruit for them in the future.

Harrod UK Men's Trophy: 2nd Round (Sunday 5th December)
1st XI 4-1 Warwick (A)
(Deeks [FG], K King [PS], Murphy [FG], Rudduck [FG])

BB travelled to Warwick in the 2nd round of the HA Trophy. Following the disappointment of a 2-2 draw the previous day, the lads were keen to get the win and safe passage into the next round. BB started brightly with player/coach Henrico Murphy scoring following the break down of a short corner. Exerted Pressure by skipper Lucas caused mayhem down the left wing for Steve Rudduck to score the second finishing neatly. With a 2-0 lead going into the break, BB were keen to avoid the scenario of the previous day. Excellent defensive displays by Ravi Chana, Ben Bradley, Chris Albut and Simon Myers ensured this was not to be the case. Starting strongly in the 2nd half, the visitors were rewarded for their persistent pressure following good work by Peter Stanley, Chris Deeks recently back from injury slotted following a good move.

Although the Home team managed to score a goal back, goal keeper Lee Cook's D was rarely invaded. The tie was killed off in the final 10 minutes when Ashby was offended in the Circle and Kevin the 'goal machine' King stepped up to convert from the flick spot.

All in all, a good performance. In the 3rd round they face Brenwtood HC, from the East Men's League Div 1., on Sunday 6th February 2005. BBHC old boy, Bimesh Sawhney, scored twice against them on Saturday for Norwich Union and could be a useful source of information.

{Augustin [PC], K Hall 2 [2 FG], Hubbard [FG], Light [FG])
2nd XI 0-6 Herne Bay (A)
3rd XI vs Wellcome (A)

Potentially the most important game of the season with BBHC Ladies' 1XI taking on bottom of the league Bluehearts ended in a well deserved and much needed 3 points for BBHC. Setting the high tempo from the start, it wasn't long before BBHC found themselves 2-0 up via a Karen Hall tap in and a perfectly executed short corner by Jane Augustin. 10 minutes before half time, Karen Hall made a fantastic run down the right to find Zoë Hubband open on the penalty spot to slot in another goal. BBHC started the second half with much the same enthusiasm and looked to have sealed the victory with a spectacular strike by Georgina Light. Bluehearts stole a goal back when they were awarded a penalty flick. However BBHC responded with Karen Hall appropriately with her second of the and five in for BBHC. Overall the game was a great display of what the ladies team are capable of and now hope to continue their form in the 2nd half of the season. Final score BBHC 5- Bluehearts 2. Player of the match Karen Hall.

Colts (Sunday 5th December)
U16 Boys 1-4 Old Bordenians (A)
(Ashenden [FG])

This result made it 3 defeats in a row and another disappointing hockey performance from the U16 Boys. The intensity and commitment provided by Tom Golding, Alfie Johnson and Sam Ashenden was not matched by their team-mates. Yet again, they gave possession away cheaply and put pressure on themselves by then allowing their opponents to run unhindered into the D. One such chance in the 2nd half saw Johnson take a hard and lifted shot against his arm and the BBHC captain required a hospital X-Ray. OB's passing game and all round team play was a joy to watch and scored 4 well-taken goals. More positively, BBHC's defensive and offensive short corner routines were well-disciplined. And they also showed one move of flowing hockey as Ashenden and Andrew Mendl fashioned a chance from the right wing, allowing Ashenden to bounce his shot through the OB's keeper. Tom Golding's great technique earned him the BBHC Man-of-the-Match award.

5th XI vs Sevenoaks (A) - Game conceded by BBHC
6th XI 3-2 Gore Court (H)
(S Bennett 2 [2 FG], D Davenport [FG])

A good match, which either side could have won, got off to a great start for the Men's 3rd's when the energetic Udi Jayasuria forced the KCL 'keeper into a mistake and gave the B's the lead. This match of end-to-end hockey was entertaining and pitted Warwick University old boys Andrei Mendis of BBHC and KCL's Tim Pippard against one another on the BBHC right flank. While they cancelled each other out, KCL pressed for an equaliser and grabbed it during some confusion in the D. The away side had plenty of chances to score but were profligate in front of goal and paid the price as King's struck in the dying minutes. BBHC can take heart from their continued improvement as this season's new squad continue to gain form and confidence, a top 5 finish is well within their capabilities.

(S Chana [FG], Agyei [FG])
6th XI 3-1 Folkestone (A)
(S Mason 2 [2 FG], S Bennett [FG])

The Men's 2nd XI took on a weary-looking University of Kent Men's 1st XI side and took an early lead via a reverse-stick, penalty corner strike from Kevin King. Captain Andy Tither put the home side 2-0 up thanks to a slick attack down the right. The students re-grouped and stood firm in the face of numerous BBHC attacks, then enjoyed periods of extended possession but without many shots. However, poor communication in the home defence led to BBHC's Andrei Mendis deflecting a weak shot into his own goal. The pressure was on but a Jamie Perfitt goal eventually killed the game off after BBHC perseverance.

U16 Boys 2-5 Beckenham (A)
(Ashenden 2 [2 FG])
U16 Girls v Bromley (H) - POSTPONED
U14 Boys 0-19 Canterbury (A)

Despite missing 2 key players, an improved performance from BBHC saw them go 1-0 up thanks to a clinical counter-attack, coolly finished off by Sam Ashenden. Beckenham soon resumed their game plan of patient hockey and drew level with a breakaway goal where the BBHC were caught napping. Captain Alfie Johnson stood firm, steadying the ship with some fine tackles while Sam Ashenden worked tirelessly in midfield and GK Tom Golding made many text-book saves. However, they were powerless when a solid penalty corner strike gave Beckenham the lead. BBHC still tended to give the ball away cheaply and allowed Beckenham to waltz through their defence and score 3 second half goals. Thankfully, BBHC finished on a high with an outstanding combination of passing hockey was smartly finished by Ashenden, thanks to great work by Vince Moore and Scott Bennett.

The Men's 1st XI were hoping to go into this week's game on a positive high from last week's away win. However, with the team finding it difficult to communicate and pass the ball amongst themselves, they found it difficult to dominate the game. BBHC’s only saving grace was the individual effort of Dean Wheeler, scoring a LBZ from the top of the D. The team will want to build on there poor performances before the Christmas break, hoping to save some points and dropping any further in the league.

With the Men's 2nd XI on a winning streak, it was hard to see any team matching them. However, the under-prepared side started poorly, they let Old Bordenians control the game, With their umpire having to work hard to control the level of hockey, many of the team received green and yellow cards for reasons unknown. BBHC went in to the break 1-0 down with a confused and frustrated side. BB started the second half much in the same way, playing poorly and letting the home side dominate the game once again. BB’s only goal came from a short corner that was mis-hit leaving Alex Webster to drill the ball into the back of the goal.

The 3rds are having to find out what work is this year, with many of the team struggling to find their feet in this team of wanderers. This time last year the team were riding high in the table and pushing for top of the league. However, this season tells a different story where currently they share bottom place with Canterbury VA. Unfortunately, the team again found it hard to gel with guest appearances from many “players”, without taking credit away from Alleyn Old Boys who played a high tempo game making some wonderful plays around the back of our defence. Leaving only Adrian Prong and Andrei Mendis to clear the lines several times BB had to battled hard to control midfield with notable performances from Tom Barnet and Dave Corker. However, with our lack of striking and passing saw BB running out 4-3 losers in the end.

With the 4’s away this week and wanting to build on last week's first ever win, the team were on a high, denying 3rd place Marden Russets several attempts on goal. However, with temperatures rising high with the constant hits going against BB, Marden Russets took the advantage and the early lead. BB found themselves 2-0 down before a yellow card was shown leaving BB with only 10 men with minutes to go and another goal conceded before the final whistle. BB missed several chances themselves but is still developing as a team and currently enjoying mid-table.

Ladies' Cup: 1st Round (Sun 14th November)
1st XI 1-1 Sevenoaks (H) - lost on penalty strokes.

The Ladies' 1st XI playing host to top of the league Bromley was going to be a tough battle. Many chances on both sides missed the final touch to seal a goal. However with Sally‘s side holding good form seeing that the game remained 0-0 gaining a well worked and vital point from the game.

The Ladies' 1st XI played Sevenoaks in the Ladies' Cup on Sunday 14-11-04, having to battle hard to take a 1-1 result at full time. However Sevenoaks came out the victors with some strong flicking.

Harrod UK Men's Trophy: 1st Round (Sun 7th November)
1st XI 6-0 Horsham (A)

Travelling down Tunbridge wells, the Men's 1st XI took on a strong Tunbridge Wells side exerting early pressure, yet BB were unlucky not to get an early goal. Four short corners later and Dave Cole put the away side ahead with a swift shot to the back of the goal. A stern defence display from Ravi Chana, Simon Myers and Chris Albutt saw BB keeping a clean sheet. It wasn’t long before BB extended their lead through ‘New Boy’ Henrico Murphy, who coolly slotted home the second. The score line was complete when skipper, Dan Lucas scored the third. Although a good solid performance by BB, the game was over shadowed by 3 yellow cards to BBHC players.

The Men's 1st XI went on to round off a good weekend with a 6-0 win in their Harrod UK Men's Trophy 1st round match away to Horsham. They now face a 2nd round trip to the midlands to face Warwick on Sunday 5th December!

The Men's 3rd XI travelled to Holcombe but the captain’s car breaking down (which held the goalkeeper's kit) forced BBHC to concede the game to a 5-0 walkover for the opposition. However, the away side played an outstanding friendly with Holcombe, drawing 1-1. A goal by the wily Raj Matharoo from a well worked short corner to put BB ahead early in the second half. However with only a kicking-back goalkeeper, BBHC were eventually conceded a sloppy goal with only five minutes to go.

Ladies
1st XI 0-1 Sevenoaks 2nd XI (H)
2nd XI 1-3
(Whale [FG])
3rd XI 5-0 Cobdown
(Fearn [FG], King [2 FG], Strickland [PS], Sweeney [FG])

BBHC Ladies' 1st XI started the game with a fast tempo and put pressure on the Sevenoaks defence early. Unfortunately they were unable to convert their short corners and went into the half time with 0-0 draw. The home side continued to dominate the second half, applying great pressure on the Sevenoaks midfield and defence in the last five minutes of the game. A harsh decision from the umpire resulted in a short corner being awarded to Sevenoaks. Sevenoaks took their only chance of the game and converted the short corner to win 1-0. BBHC, though disappointed by the turn of events, played well and dominated the game and will build on there performance for next week's game.

The Ladies' 2nd XI did not display the performance that they have done in previous matches, concluding in a 3-1 defeat for the team. Despite this, some gutsy effort resulted in a well worked goal for Sarah Whale. Other noticeable performances came from Genevieve Sweeney and Lisa French.

Yet another resounding victory for BBHC Ladies' 3rd XI, as we dominated both halves. Sarah Brine kept another clean sheet. Jenny Strickland scored from a penalty flick, Sam Hall and Louise Fern scored their first goals of the season and Barbara King scored two.

Colts (Sunday 7th November)
U14 Boys 0-16 Old Williamsonians (A)
U16 Boys 1-6 Gore Court (A)
(V Moore [PC])

The U16 Boys came crashing back down to Earth with a 6-1 loss to a well-drilled Gore Court side. The opposition constantly put pressure on the visitors and therefore conceded possession far too cheaply. Gore Court's playmakers could therefore create many chances - the 3-0 half-time score could have been far worse. Scott Bennett led the BBHC forward line with encouraging skill and great spirit but lacked effective support at key moments. Vince Moore poached a penalty corner goal at the near post but it was little consolation for a performance that exposed the work that needs to be done for the boys to get to the next level.

The U14 Boys suffered a 16-0 loss to Old Williamsonians. With no permanent goalkeeper at present, Ashley McGeechan kindly agreed to do the job this week but found it harder than he thought. His efforts were much appreciated, though. The boys can take heart from the fact that the present U16 Boys team went through the same tough times when they first played together in the U14s league - their perseverance has paid off. Meanwhile, the experienced David Humber was away at Kent U14 trials so the team missed his presence - he is waiting to hear if he has been successful after a good performance on the day.

Poor communication by the home side complicated matters when BBHC U16 Girls were expecting a game on astro-turf but had to join Burnt Ash in a dash to BAHC's grass pitches. However, the mainly young and inexperienced BBHC team acquitted themselves well for the 2nd game in a row, losing 5-0 to their local rivals.

23rd October 2004

Men
1st XI 5-1 Herne Bay (A)
2nd XI 7-2 Gore Court 3rd XI (H)

3rd XI 0-2 RASRA (A)
4th XI 2-5 Old Bordenians (H)
5th XI 0-5 Canterbury (A)
6th XI 0-1 Wellcome (H)

After last week's impressive victory the Men's 2XI were expecting great things. BBHC started brightly with an early goal from Captain Andy Tither from a well worked short corner. This lead was soon followed up with a second goal from Men’s director of hockey Paul Harvey flicking past the keeper. However on the restart gore court took the advantage and played a quick attack to pull a goal back to finish the first half 2-1. BBHC then started the second half with much the same tempo and style with Harvey slotting home another flick to make it 3-1. BBHC then took there new confidence and extended there score line by placing another 3 goals in 10 minutes with goals coming from Derren Westbrook with another flick and Allan Sains from a short corner. With victory sealed BBHC stepped off the pressure and conceded a goal from a defensive error giving Gore Court there second of the match. Anthony Clark then led the attack for BBHC once again and scored 2 goals to finish the match 7-2. With that win BBHC now top the league table. Well done to all the boys!

With the Men's 3rd XI playing away this week to local team Rasra, the pressure was on for them to score and win this match. With an unsettled team, once again, this was going to be tough. BBHC started brightly, holding Rasra at bay. However, Rasra then started to take control and eventually scored, with the BBHC midfield and defence backing off far too much. The second half and BBHC took control playing some smart hockey and outplaying Rasra at times, however Rasra were awarded a short corner and converted to make it 2-0. BBHC played some decent hockey in the second half but just couldn’t find the back of the goal with two great efforts cleared off the goal line by Rasras impervious defence.

Ladies
1st XI 1-2 Hertford (A)

The Ladies' 1st XI had their fifth league game of the season away to Hertford in the torrential rain. Hertford took the lead in the first half to bring the game in 1-0 at the break. BBHC then fought hard in the second to and were awarded several short corners, one of which was converted by Captain Sally Wallace to bring the score level at 1-1. BBHC then took control of the game and pushed the Hertford defence, however a goal from a short corner that was unfairly awarded in the dying seconds of the game ensured Hertford ran out eventual winners at 2-1.

Two early goals in the first half set the pace for the Ladies' 2nd XI with fantastic defensive work from BBHC to hold Tunbridge wells goalless for the game. Goals came from Julie Bailey and Mel Neale. Well done girls keep up the solid performance.

Colts (Sunday 17th October)
U16 Boys 4-1 Sevenoaks (H)
(D Humber [2 FG], V Moore [2 FG])

BBHC U16 Boys looked to pick up where they left off against Tulse Hill & Dulwich but came up against tougher opposition at home against Sevenoaks. BBHC were caused to play more of their traditional counter-attacking style in tandem with some slicker, short-passing moves. Many chances came to the dangerous BBHC forward pair, with a Vince Moore field goal opening the scoring followed by two from David Humber. However, an assertive 3-0 half-time lead was wasted thanks to poor fitness and ball retention. Sevenoaks commanded possession and exerted much of the pressure and even had a goal disallowed. Goalkeeper Tom Golding was at his best in keeping out the visitors but a smart bit of skill from a Sevenoaks forward saw them pull a goal back. Luckily, a trademark BBHC counter-attack saw Vince Moore score another field goal and bring the B's home. An entertaining match but the manager was disappointed by the lack of focus in the 2nd half - next week's big game against Beckenham looks even more daunting. The players and the manager voted Tom as their Man-of-the Match.

9th October 2004

Men
1st XI 3-4 Ashford (A)
(Ashby [FG], D Cole [PC], Wheeler [FG])
2nd XI 5-2 Marden Russets (H)
3rd XI 3-2 Canterbury (A)
4th XI 1-1 Gravesham (H)
5th XI - Game cancelled, 5-0 win BBHC
6th XI 3-3 New Beccehamians (H)

The Men's 1st XI travelled to newly-promoted Ashford in search of their first league win! After a poor start Ashford went one nil up. The equalizer came with in 5 mins when Dean Wheeler slotted past the Ashford Goalkeeper. BBHC extended their lead when Dave Cole scored for the 2nd consecutive week finishing a ‘slick’ short corner. Ashford Came back at us and scored to make it 2-2, however the poaching instinct of Mark Ashby brought us the lead. A mad last 8 minutes saw Ashford score two quick goals to win the match. We will dry our eyes!

Ladies
1st XI 5-0 St Albans 3rd XI (H)
(A Davenport, K Hall, Hubbard, Moore, Whale)
2nd XI 3-3 Ashford (H)
3rd XI 2-0 Sutton Valance (A)

After a shaky start to the season, BBHC Ladies' 1st XI were fired up for their first home game and the positive attitude paid off. Brilliant passing and superb team play soon resulted in a goal and by the half time BBHC had an impressive 3-0 lead with goals from Ashley Davenport, Karen Hall and Sarah Whale. The second half was started with the same enthusiasm as the first and great attacking play soon broke down the St. Albans defence once again. Following a mass debate between the umpires, Sue Moore was correctly awarded the fourth goal. Zoë Hubbard converting a fantastic free hit sealed victory. The well, deserved result now puts BBHC back on track and look forward to their next league game in a local derby with Burnt Ash. Player of the match awarded to Sue Moore.

Colts (Sunday 10th October)
U16 Girls 0-2 Sevenoaks (A)

A stunning performance by BBHC U16 girls in their first game of the season meant Sevenoaks goals were kept to a minimum on Sunday. In the first half the defense soaked up lots of pressure and they kept the score to 0-0, Sarah Brine in goal producing some stunning saves. Louise Fearn made numerous crucial tackles but finally Sevenoaks put their first goal away in the 2nd half. BBHC fought hard with a fine shot from Erin Courtney which nearly brought the scores level. A late goal from Sevenoaks secured the game. A great all round performance from a young squad of girls.

Colts
U16 Boys 9-1 Tulse Hill & Dulwich (A)
(Ashenden [PC], S Bennett [2 FG], L Humber [PC], Alfie Johnson [PC], V Moore [3 FG], Pellat [FG])

A mature performance by BBHC's U16 boys team saw them rout a well organised Tulse Hill & Dulwich side 9-1! The manager's man-of-the-match, Sam Ashenden, dominated the midfield, allowing his team to flourish. Every player shined thanks to their superior experience and strength gained from playing adult hockey on Saturdays. BBHC went into half-time 5-1 up. Early Tulse Hill pressure had been overcome by penalty corner goals from Ashenden and Lee Humber. Mark Pellat scored with a deft deflection on his debut, while Vince Moore and Scott Bennett produced some dazzling stick skills and movement up front together to grab 5 goals. His team-mates voted Bennett their man-of-the-match. Captain Alfie Johnson wrapped the match with the 3rd penaly corner goal. Next up are Sevenoaks (h) on Sun 17th Oct.
