Asford Men's Vets Tournament - Hamlets lost in the final to Ashford.
| 30th July 2003 |
Holcombe Vets League
BBHC Hamlets 0 - 5 Holcombe
In there last but one league game they played the organising clubs home side in what was always going to be there toughest fixture of the summer. BBHC were not helped with an under strength side and temperatures in the high 80's. The first 20 minutes saw BBHC Hamlets defend well and Gordon Walker in goal was on fine form. They even had a couple of breakaway attempts of there own but Darren Laws was unable to find the final pass after making strong runs. Holcombe took the lead after 25 minutes and increased this just on half time with a couple of dubious umpiring decisions going against them.
This seemed to dent there confidence and as the heat began to tell they had no answer in the second half to Holcombe constant attacks. Holcombe increased there lead with 3 second half efforts to run out convincing 5-0 winners on the day. BBHC Hamlets need to re-group for there last league game in 2 weeks time against Sutton Valence.

Priory Mixed League 3rd/4th Playoff
BBHC 2 - 2 Muppets
(Lucas & Moore, Quincey 2)
Holcombe Vets League
BBHC Hamlets 0 - 5 Herne Bay
Having battled hard through this summer league BBHC and Muppets fought out a 2-2 draw in the 3rd/4th playoff in an enjoyable and exciting inter club game. BBHC started the stronger, making the most of Muppets disorganisation, with a barrage of shots going in on Lee Cook it wasn't long before BBHC finally scored with a precision shot grazing the inside post from Dan Lucas. However, it remained 1-0 until half time with the pace of the game increasing and this had the makings of a classic in the second half.
Carrying on riding their luck BBHC extended their lead in the 2nd Half - Sue Moore Cleverly converting a short corner. This, it seemed fuelled the Muppets who went in search of the fight back, first off a cracking effort from Steve Quincy beat the BBHC goalkeeper. With time ticking on the equaliser look inevitable with BBHC trying to hang on for the win. A controversial short corner was awarded by the umpire and Quincey again capitalised sending his drag flick into the roof of the net. In the last 5 minutes of frantic hockey -both teams searched for the winner. However, time was against both teams and the final whistle blew leaving the game to stand at 2-2, a result many believed was fair overall. The teams therefore shared 3rd place in the league.
The following night the BBHC Hamlets played another veterans league game against strong opposition Herne Bay. After a bright start in this league recent results have been poor, Herne Bay capitalised on this and played some superb hockey to go in at the break 3-0 up. In the second half they continued to pressure and Hamlets had no answer to a far superior team. Herne Bay added a couple more to give them a resounding 5-0 win. With only a couple of league games left Hamlets need to step up a gear if they are to finish in the top half of the table.

Priory Mixed League Semi-Finals
BBHC 2 - 3 Collection (Beckenham/Purley)
(Dan Lucas 2)
BBHC Muppets 0 - 4 Beckenham Beavers
Men's Friendly
BBHC 7 - 4 Van's (Dutch Touring Side)
(Ben Bradley 4, David Cole 2 & Mark Ashby 1)
BBHC sides fall at semi-final stage.
BBHC main squad played in the first semi at Priory and after a poor first half
were 3-0 down at the break against a far superior side. However, after the break
as Collection took it easier BBHC started to put some decent moves together and
were rewarded with a fine brace of goals late on in the second half from Dan
Lucas. Try as they might they could not get the all important third and will
have to settle for the
3rd/4th play off next week.
Muppets then played there semi and produced there worst performance of the competition, with an under strength side they never got going and Beckenham Beavers coasted through both half's scoring 2 goals in each one. Muppets will now meet BBHC in the play off next week, playing for club pride only.
On Saturday a BBHC men's select X1 played a Dutch touring side in the first friendly
in the build up to next season. BBHC continued where they left off at the end
of last season and blew the oppo away in the first half with 5 quick goals before
the Vans scored one on the stroke of half time. These goals came from Bradley
2, Cole 2 and Ashby. As the heat took effect, BBHC tired in the second half and
the Vans came into it winning the half 3-2 on goals also missing 2 penalty flicks
which could have made the final score of 7-4 a lot closer. Bradley added two
more goals from close range to total 4 in all for himself. This was a decent
first run out for BBHC and they will be looking to build on this over the coming
weeks before the leagues start up again.
Many of the youngsters played for BBHC in this game with all them giving good
performances (Tom Golding, Vincent Moore, Alfie Johnson & Sam Ashenden), hopefully
they can build on this throughout the coming
season.

Priory Mixed League
BBHC 1 - 3 Collection (Beckenham/Purley)
(Price)
Holcombe Vets League
BBHC Hamlets 1 - 4 Maidstone
(Brine)
BBHC played there final group game and with both sides already qualifying for the semi's next week where they face each other again it was played in a relaxed spirit. BBHC actually produced a fine performance against a much stronger opposition. After going one down early they tied the scores at half-time with a close range effort from Phil Price. The second half saw BBHC run out of energy towards the end and Collection took advantage with two late strikes. The other semi will be between BBHC Muppets and Beckenham Beavers.
The BBHC Hamlets took on a very powerful Maidstone side and were lucky not to finish with a heavier defeat, They were already 3-0 down by early in the second half before Ian Brine produced a fine effort to give the score some respectability. However, Maidstone continued to press and scored another late on to give Hamlets there heaviest defeat this summer.
At the London Youth Games both the boys and girls hockey sides managed and coached by senior BBHC players helped Bexley Borough overall to a very creditable position. The girls came 9th out of all the London Boroughs and the boys did especially well finishing up 4th.

Priory Mixed League
BBHC Muppets 3 - 0 BBHC
(Ashby 2, Quincey)
Vets Friendly
BBHC Hamlets 2 - 1 Blackheath
(Doidge)
Muppets played there last group game against fellow club rivals BBHC. With Muppets already through to the play offs they could relax, BBHC only have a slim chance with one more game next week for them to qualify. This was a one sided contest with Muppets having that extra quality in the forward line where it mattered. Two stunning strikes in the first half from Steve Quincey and Mark Ashby were just reward for Muppets continuing pressure. With the game already won the second half was a non event with neither side creating too much. However, Muppets were awarded a penalty rather harshly against the BBHC defence, Mark Ashby though made no mistake and converted it well. Muppets now have a week off before the semi-finals take place the following week. BBHC will most probably need to win there last game this week to have any chance of getting into the semi-finals as well.
The BBHC Veterans also played this week at local side Blackheath ground in a friendly. The home side were quite disorganised and BBHC took advantage of this in the first half to go in 2-0 up at the break courtesy of a couple of fine strikes by Liam Doidge. The second half was more even and Blackheath got a goal mid-way through the half to make the final 15 minutes a little nervous for the BBHC Hamlets. However, they held firm and recorded a fine victory before returning to league action this week.

Priory Mixed League
BBHC Muppets 1 - 3 Beckenham Beavers
(Rochford)
Holcombe Vets League
BBHC Hamlets 1 - 2 Old Bordenians
(Pellett)
With the main BBHC side having no game this week it was left to the other BBHC side Muppets to play the top of the table side Beavers. Against the run of play Muppets had there first attack after 5 minutes and a good move was completed when Chris deeks drove to the bye line and crossed to Mark Rochford 5 yards out. The ball took a slight deflection and Mark did well to control it and then on the half volley strike the opening goal. Beavers hit back hard and dominated the rest of the half, they equalised in the 10th minute when a free hit got a slight deflection to beat Lee Cook easily in goal. On the stroke of half time Beavers took the lead when a fine individual run from there female striker was superbly squeezed into the far corner leaving Cook again with no chance. The second half was slightly more even, however, Beavers were the only team who took advantage of the chances created and 10 minutes into the half there female striker again scored a fine individual goal on the reverse stick to give Beavers a 3-1 win and Muppets first defeat in the competition. All eyes are on Muppets final game next week when they need to beat BBHC to qualify for the final play offs and deny BBHC there's.
On the same night the Hamlet Veterans played Old Bordenians and were unlucky to lose 2-1. With an under strength side they did well to go in at half-time equal at 1-1. Bordenians had taken the lead but Mark Pellett equalised as he got on the end of a decent passing move. The second half was just as even, Bordenians took the lead mid-way through the half but Hamlets came back strong and were denied a goal in the closing minutes. The umpires conferred after a goal had originally been given and changed the decision. With two defeats on the trot BBHC Hamlets look like ending up mid-way in this strong league.

Priory Mixed League
BBHC 0 - 3 Burnt Ash Renegades
BBHC Muppets 3 - 0 Bromley Ramblers
(Rochford, Ashby, Quincey)
Holcombe Vets League
BBHC Hamlets 0 - 1 Cobdown
On Tuesday BBHC sent out a depleted side in strength to face local rivals Renegades. They were unable to find any rhythm as a side and found the night tough going. Renegades took full advantage and went in at half time 2-0 deserved leaders with some good team hockey. BBHC came out more determined in the second half but could not find any attacks worthy of a goal. Towards the end Renegades broke and scored again to win comfortably 3-0, this is likely to mean BBHC will not feature in the final play offs.
The following night Muppets took to the field and again although having for them an under strength side, it was still good enough to secure the win. This keeps them top of the league and near enough guarantees them a place in the finals. Mark Rochford opened the scoring from a short corner routine and just on half time captain Mark Ashby extended this lead when he got a deft touch on a pass from Chris Deeks to send the ball over the line. The second half Muppets just did enough and did not extend themselves, they scored one further goal mid-way through the half when Steve Quincey kept up his recent goal scoring tally with a fine individual effort. Muppets ran out very worthwhile winners 3-0. On the same night the Veterans side Hamlets took the field against Cobdown and although only having 10 players put up a fighting display against a superior side. Mid-way through the half, Cobdown took the lead and from this point seemed happy with that. They defended very well and whatever Hamlets did they could not score the equaliser, if they had 11 men it may have been a different story. They are still in with a chance in the league this being there first defeat.

Priory Mixed League
BBHC 4 - 3 Beckenham Weazels
(Lucas 3 & Price)
BBHC Muppets 2 - 0 Sevenoaks Scrambled Oaks
(Quincy & Bilby)
Both home sides played on the same night and were rewarded with fine victories. BBHC played first and started off slowly as a couple of players arrived late. Against the run of play and from a rare attack Dan Lucas got on the end of a good pass to reverse stick a fine shot pass the bemused Weazels keeper. As the half went on Weazels were getting ever closer to an equaliser and they were rewarded when a strong individual run and shot from there main striker took a slight deflection, which left the BBHC keeper with no chance of saving. As the half drew to a close Weazels got a penalty corner and a first strike on goal flew in just about at the allowable height to give them the lead. The second half was more even with the game moving quickly from end to end. BBHC got the better of this and from two fine moves first Lucas added his and BBHC second, then Phil Price added a third from a close in situation. Almost immediately Weazels went on the attack and tied the scores up once again with an equaliser. With minutes to go BBHC mustered up one more decent attack, which ended with Price hitting the post, fortunately the ball re-bounded to Lucas who made no mistake to complete his personal hat-trick and BBHC winning goal for a 4-3 result.
Following this game Muppets played Sevenoaks and in a tight match went in 1-0 up at half time with a fantastic individual goal from Steve Quincy, which flew into the top corner from a reverse stick shot. In the early minutes of the second half this lead was increased when a fine move found Vicky Bilby unmarked with only the goalie to beat and she made no mistake. Unfortunately, the game from this point on became a war of words between several of the Sevenoaks players and the umpires controlling the game. This resulted in several cards and made the game a non-event with neither side playing much inspiring hockey. This win still leaves Muppets clear at the top of the league.

Priory Mixed League
BBHC Muppets 1 - 0 Purley Walcountians Collection
(Ashby)
BBHC 1 - 2 Beavers
(Tuckey)
Holcombe Vets League
BBHC Hamlets 3 - 2 Old Williamsonians
(Doidge 2, Davernport)
Muppets played first again this week against the favorites for the league who won the title last year. Collection started off at a strong pace and had the major amount of ball and continual flowing attacks. However, Muppets defence remained firm with Lee Cook pulling off some fine saves. Slowly Jimmy Henderson and Chris Deeks in central midfield started to get more of the ball and created one or two counter attacks and the team started to get more confidence. Collection were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when the umpires failed to confer and only a penalty short corner resulted which Collection were unable to convert. The score remained 0-0 until half-time, in the second half the game was more even and the game flowed from end to end. Collection were becoming more agitated and there game was not as fluid with some of them arguing amongst themselves. Muppets took advantage of this and with 10 minutes to go were awarded a short corner, which with a first time strike by captain Mark Ashby resulted in a fearsome shot that flew into the goal. Try as they might Collection could not find an opening, the Muppets players were competing for everything as if there lives depended on it and ran out 1-0 winners to go top of the league.
The following night BBHC played the Beavers and unfortunately found themselves 2-0 down in the opening minutes. After this initial shock the side settled down and slowly got themselves back into the game, but were unfortunate not to get a goal with the amount of possession gained. The second half saw BBHC start to dominate and after a good team move Sarah Tuckey scored with a close range shot. Try as they might they could not find an opening to tie the scores up and were unlucky to run 2-1 losers. Although this has dented there hopes of making the play offs they still have all to play for.
Last weekend the Vets Hamlets played there second league game following last weeks win. Having to start with 10 players did not bode well and they soon went 1-0 down from a penalty short corner. At the same time the 11th player turned up and the game became more even and mid-way through the half Liam Doidge got on the end of a good move to touch the ball over the line to tie the scores up. Within five minutes a similar move resulted in the same player scoring his second from even closer range to give the Hamlets a deserved half time lead of 2-1. In the second half Hamlets added to there lead with some fine approach work by Dave Davenport which resulted in Liam Doidge scoring Hamlets third and he personally completing a superb hat-trick. The game became stretched as both sides tired, Old Willies got a second and then were awarded a penalty flick which they failed to convert. Hamlets had ridden there luck and played out the final minutes missing a couple of good opportunities of there own to complete a second win by 3-2.

Priory Mixed League
BBHC Muppets 2 - 1 Burnt Ash Renegades
(Bilby, Deeks)
BBHC 4 - 1 Bromley Ramblers
(Lucas, Price 3)
Holcombe Vets League
BBHC Hamlets 3 - 0 Gillingham Anchorians
(Corker 2, King)
Another good week for the club in general with 3 wins. First to take the field were BBHC Muppets who improved on last weeks draw by having a more cutting edge to there game up front. Jimmy Henderson played in central midfield and was dominant in possession and proved the catalyst for most of Muppets attacks. Several opportunities were created in the first half but good defence by Renegades kept the Muppets forwards at bay. Five minutes into the second half a fine through ball to Vicky Bilby saw her get the faintest of deflections to open the scoring. Muppets then became too casual for the next 10 minutes and Renegades scored an equaliser which gave Lee Cook in goal no chance of saving. Muppets then started playing there best hockey and were a constant threat for the rest of the game. With 10 minutes to go a storming run down the wing by Mark Rochford saw him go to the base line and pull back a cross which Chris Deeks superbly converted to give Muppets a thoroughly deserved win. The following night BBHC main side took on Bromley Ramblers and continued there good form taking an early lead courtesy of a Dan Lucas shot. Ramblers then came back into the game and right on the stroke of half time were awarded a penalty which they duly converted. The second half belonged to Phil Price who is having a storming summer having rediscovered his scoring touch. He was a constant threat to Ramblers and got on the end of three chances in the second half to score a great hat-trick which resulted in BBHC winning 4-1. On the same night the Veterans Hamlets side took on Gillingham Anchorians at the Holcombe league and wasted no time in taking the lead after 2 minutes with Dave Corker scoring from close range. Anchorians were disorganised for the rest of the half and Hamlets took full advantage with Dave King scoring a second and Dave Corker getting his second and Hamlets third on the stroke of half-time. The second half was a more even contest but the Hamlets defence remained tight and they ran out convincing 3-0 winners.

Priory Mixed League
BBHC Muppets 0 - 0 Beckenham Weazels
BBHC 2 - 1 Sevenoaks Scramblers
(Tuckey, Price)
BBHC Muppets played first against Beckenham Weazels, it took both sides the whole of the first half to find a fluidity to there game. There was very little in the way of quality hockey and what chances came were from penalty short corners which Muppets were unable to convert. After half time the pace picked up along with the quality and it seemed only a matter of time before Muppets opened the scoring, but bad finishing and good goalkeeping kept them at bay. On countless occasions the forwards were left on a one on one scenario but were unable to find the breakthrough. They hit the post twice and Mark Ashby and Chris Deeks were unlucky not to score from the rebounds. From the odd breakaway Phil Watson in goal pulled off some fine saves, ensuring Beckenham Weazels would not get an undeserved win. The game ended 0-0 with vital league points dropped against one of the weaker sides.
The following night BBHC full club side played Sevenoaks Scramblers in another tight affair. Although always having the upper hand they only went into half time with a 1-0 lead courtesy of a goal by lady captain Sarah Tuckey. The second half was more evenly contested and Sevenoaks managed to score an equaliser mid-way through the half. BBHC pushed hard to regain the lead and in the dying minutes Phil Price came up with the goods with a fine individual goal to give them a thoroughly deserved win.

Men’s
1st XI 4 – 1 Marden Russets
(Abbott, Wheeler. Rudduck and Deeks)
3rd XI 4 – Gravesham 2
(Sains 2, Driscol, Price)
4th XI 0 – 3 Cliftonville
5th XI 4 – 2 Sevonoaks
(Ashenden 2, Brine 2)
In the final league game of the season with the league won the mens 1st xi were able to play with no real pressure on the although they wanted the win to finish the season with only one league defeat. They started off confidently and in the opening period of play dominated possession and were unlucky on several occasions not to take the lead. After a quarter of an hour they were awarded a penalty short corner which eventually found its way to Rob Abbott who made no mistake with a great strike to open the scoring. BBHC kept up the pressure allowing Marden very few opportunities to create anything going forward. Just before half time another fine piece of attacking play saw the ball end up with Dean Wheeler who completed the move with a good goal for the home side to lead 2- 0 at the interval. The second half started off scrappy with BBHC’s passing letting them down, however Marden did not take advantage of this and eventually mid-way through the half BBHC picked up again where they left off in the first half and started carving out scoring chances, only bad finishing from Deeks Rudduck’s and Wheeler stopped them increasing there lead. Eventually Rudduck and Deeks scored two late goals from open play to give the score line a more realistic look. Marden did create one good piece of play right on the final whistle and were rewarded with a fine goal of there own to make the final score 4 – 1 BBHC can now go away for a good rest ready to rebuild for the new league next season.
The mens 3rd xi played out there last league game and started off with a goal in the first five minutes from Alan Sains with a fine individual effort. They then got over confident and within the next ten minutes found themselves 2 – 1 down to Gravesham with some poor defending, after the mid-field gave away cheap possession. To there credit the team re-organised and a few minutes before half time Sains completed the first half scoring with another finely taken strike. The half time team talk captain Matt Jobson certainly worked as the team produced a second half full of controlled hockey. They added two more goals, the pick of which was the first by Warren Driscol with a clever reverse stick shot which flew into the opponent’s goal. The scoring was completed by Price who finished off a fine period of passing with a shot from close range. Like the first team they can now have a good rest before moving up a division, which will test how far they have come over the recent few months.
The mens 4th xi played a friendly against Cliftonville before there final league game next week. With a weakened side due to injuries they found it tough going against a young fit Cliftonville side and came away with a creditable 3 – 0 defeat.
The mens 5th xi produced the performance of the day by defeating Sevenoaks 4 – 2 the side contained some stars of the future with 6 of the side around the age of 12 to 14. The first half was all BBHC and only poor finishing stopped them opening the scoring. When Sevenoaks did get a rare break young Tom Golding picked them off and started the attacks off again. However, the half time whistle went with the score some how still at 0 – 0. In the second half the young BBHC forwards of Ashenden, Pellett, Mason & Johnson ran the Sevenoaks defence ragged and finally Ashendon got on the end of a fine cross to open the scoring. Unfortunately from the re-start Sevenoaks immediately scored an equaliser. This had no effect on the home side who kept going forward and Ashenden again got on the end of a scramble in the D to tuck away his and BBHC second goal. Ian Brine again got himself into a forward position to score his second and BBHC’s forth goal to end up deserved 4 – 2 winners. With one more league game left, this team will finish up in a very healthy mid-table position.

4th X1 1 Ashford 0
(Laws.D)
5th X1 2 Folkestone 0
(Davenport & Humber)
Veterans Hamlets 1 Burnt Ash 1

In this the penultimate game BBHC men's 1st X1 team needed just a point to be crowned champions. This was not going to be easy as Old Bordeians still had an outside chance of promotion themselves, providing they were to win there last 2 games. Due to a motorway crash the team did not arrive until late and were therefore slightly under prepared for the game. However, you would never have known this as the team played the opening half as if they were champions already. Mid-way through the half Dan Lucas opened the scoring with a finely struck shot after good approach play. This was quickly followed by a rare goal from Peter Stanley who made no mistake from close range. The second half was tense and BBHC showed some slight nervousness as they crept over the winning line. Fine goalkeeping by Lee Cook kept the Old Bordenians forwards at bay and BBHC ran out deserved winners 2-0. With there final game at home to Marden Russets this week (1.15pm Erith Sports Astro), BBHC will want to finish the season on a winning note.
The men's 2nd X1 needed a win to finish second on goal difference above Old Bordenians who they happen to playing. The opening 20 minutes was a tight affair with BBHC having the majority of the ball but with few opportunities being created. However, after a fine piece of attacking play the umpire awarded a penalty flick for a stick tackle in the area. With normal penalty taker Derren Westbrook suspended mark Rochford stepped up and showed no nerves with a superb flick to open the scoring. BBHC piled on the pressure and a second goal from open play by Mark Rochford after a mazy run out of defence by Adrian Webster gave the home side a two nil lead going into half-time. The second half was more of an even contest and against the run of play BBHC were awarded a second penalty when a defender stopped the ball on the line with his foot. Unfortunately Rochford was now sidelined with a groin injury and Captain Mark Ashby took responsibility and made no mistake with a fine flick. This seemed to gee up the away side who fought back gamely and from a penalty short corner which broke loose on the right scored a good goal to make the score 3-1 mid-way through the second half. A further injury to Dave King unbalanced the home defense and with Danny Eyre getting sent off for ten minutes following a bad tackle BBHC wee under the cosh. However, this team always surprises you and from a rare breakout Quenton Kotze hit an unbelievable shot which the goalkeeper somehow saved but the ball broke to Warren Driscoll who made no mistake with a shot into the roof of the goal. To there credit Old Bordenians did not give up and scored a second late on to end up 4-2 losers. BBHC now await the league to see if they are promoted following summer league re-structuring.
The 3rd X1 played Ashford away and having already been crowned champions put in a lack lustre display against a strong Ashford side and were soundly beaten 3-1 with a consoloation goal by Jamie Parfitt.
The 4th X1 recorded a great 1-0 win against Ashford with stand in captain Darren Laws bagging the winner in the first half. This side after a dreadful season, appear to be turning the corner, and the club is hopeful they will come straight back up next season.
The 5th X1 won 2-0 courtesy of a goal in each half by Davenport and Humber respectively
to continue a fine run of recent results.
The Veterans played there last game of the season against local rivals Burnt
Ash. After going 1-0 down early on BBHC standard of play steadily improved and
were rewarded towards the end of the game with a fine goal by leading scorer
Ian Palmer to tie the result up at 1-1.
Ladies
Printwize East Division 1 - 1st X1 0 Bishops Stortford 3
2nd X1 0 Old Holcombeians 0
3rd X1 2 Greenwich Polygons 0
(Copeland & Strickland)
The ladies 1st X1 played there penultimate Printwize game against fellow fellow relegation rivals B.Stortford. With little to play for except pride BBHC played with good determination but deep into first half stoppage time conceded a goal from a poor short corner decision by the umpire. This seemed to affect the home side and there second half performance was woeful with 2 further goals being scored by the opposition. A major re-building exercise will be needed before the start of next season.
The 2nd X1 had another fine result against Old Holcombeians with karen White in goal having a stormer. With the rest of the defense playing well they got a deserved 0-0 draw.
The 3rd X1 had another fine win to finish the season with, courtesy of goals by Debbie Copeland & Jenny Strickland. This win helped them to finish in the top half of the table with promotion thoughts being mentioned for next season.

Finger tips on the trophy
Just needing 1 point from 2 games the men’s 1st team took another step towards
promotion, with a gutsy performance against a tough South Saxon’s. The B’s who
was unable to get into there normal slick routine scored the opening goal through
Steve Rudderk. B’s unable to play the quality hockey that they have so often
showed throughout the season had to dig deep to hold back Saxons. A coolie converted
flick by Dan Lucas enabled the B’s to find there footing. Saxons who pulled a
goal back was soon finished off by an outstanding short corner strike through
Zoro.
Silverware for the B 3’s
The men’s 3rd team gain promotion with 2 games to go, a team that has been consistent throughout the season saw off Holc’s 2 – 1. A fantastic LBZ to the roof of the net from the South Africa Warren Driscol, set the B’s running. Holcs was unable to defend a fine move down the right hand side of the pitch by Cole and Webster which lead to them given away a penalty flick. Which was coolie converted by Qotze the second South African.

Most certainly, the Ladies 2's WON their first game of the season - YIPPPEEEE!!! We played Gravesend and beat them 5-4, goal scorers were; Vicky Knight 2, Julie Bailey 1, Ange Kefford 1, Wendy Davenport 1.

Smith and Jones double act
The Ladies 1st have battled through a tough season and today we finally got the
result we deserved. We triumphed 2 – 1 at home. BBHC took the early lead from
a build up down the left and the ball slipped across the D from Woodbrigde for
Georgie Smith to step onto a bury it in the far post. St Ives equalised not too
long after. However the gallant B’s kept on attacking and we scored again in
open play when Claire Jones took advantage of a loose ball in a tussle in front
of the Ives goal. BBHC then used their confidence and pressed St Ives back in
there half. B’s who looked a different side were overwhelmed with there performance
for there first win of the seaon. “Well Done”
The Ladies 2nd XI with a full squad traveled away to Canterbury. We started off full of fright and determination and this showed in the first half. An unlucky goal in the last minute of the first half deflated the side. Keeping our heads up and passionate to win, we battle through the second half unfortunate to concede two goals. Watch out next season Canturybury.
The local derby BBHC Mens 1st XI Vs Burnt Ash, slow out of the starting blocks both sides look as if they had been through a long season, although there were not too many open chances BBHC went 2 – 1 up in the first half. BBHC looking to stay top of the league needed to secure the result, pushing on B’s scored the 3rd, which proved enough. With promotion in there sights BBHC have now proved that they are definitely the stronger side in the borough.
The 2nd X1 continued there fine run of results with another convincing win against Canterbury. A much changed Canterbury side to the one that had beaten the B’s earlier this season were under pressure in the first couple on minutes with two chances just passing the posts. It wasn’t long before the scoring started with a fine move using Tiver’s pace down the right, then a couple of slick passes found Jones to push into a empty goal. A calm and controlled B’s side pushed forward and contributed 3 more before half time, Deeks two and 1 from Ashby. The second half Canterbury defending much better and unable to take their chances but managed to score the 5th from a well drilled short corner finished off by Ram.

This year’s AGM will be held at BHSC on 24th April 2003 at 8pm prompt, it would be nice if we could get at least 50% of the membership to attend. There will be a lot happening to the section over the years ahead and it would be good to get some input from the membership as to which direction you believe that we should be going. I hope to see you all in April.

The crunch match of the season saw BBHC playing the league leaders away and they got off to a confident start. Mid-way through the half BBHC were awarded a penalty short corner and this was duly converted by Steve Ruddocks with a wonderful strike. They continued there domination of possession and from the next penalty short corner Ben Bradley followed up the strike off the keepers pads to put BBHC two up and in a seemingly unbeatable position. However, after half time they lost there way and Valence took full advantage and were soon back on level terms with two individual strikes. Panic set in and in a tense final 20 minutes the game could have gone either way. With ten minutes to go Henrico Murphy who was playing his last game of the season before returning to S.Africa made a chance for himself and scored a fine goal. BBHC ran down the final minutes to run out 3-2 winners and barring a disaster should be crowned champions in the next couple of weeks.
The 2nd X1 continued there fine run of results with another convincing win against one of the lower sides Kings College. They dominated play and only poor finishing and fine goalkeeping kept the score 0-0 for the opening 25 minutes. However, the deadlock was broken when BBHC were awarded a penalty for an infringement in the area and Derren Westbrook made no mistake with a perfectly taken flick. As the first half petered out two injuries occurred to the home side and this had an unsettling effect. However, ten minutes into the second half young Tedge Singh who was making his debut for the side made something out of nothing and scored a well taken goal. For the next 15 minutes BBHC ran riot and battered the Kings goal, further strikes came from Ram and Chris Deeks to put BBHC four up. The last 10 minutes was a messy affair and the umpires did well to control one or two tempers, this win keeps BBHC handily placed 2nd in this league.
The 3rd X1 got a fair draw against local rivals Blackheath with Andrei Mendis getting an equaliser 10 minutes from the end to keep the side in touch with automatic promotion. The 4th X1 were on the wrong end of a 3-1 defeat after Jordan Laws had scored a good equaliser, but the level of play is now starting to improve after a tricky season. The Veterans lost narrowly 3-2 in the last couple of minutes after leading 2-1 with 5 minutes to go courtesy of a brace of goals from Peter Richmond.

Sunday Ladies Kent Cup Semi Final
1st X1 0 Maidstone 2
The 1st X1 played a relegation battle with the losers almost certainly going down. It was not pretty to watch but the game was decided mid-way through the first half when the umpire gave a harsh penalty which was duly converted by the away side. Try as they might BBHC could not get back on terms and they are now fully aware they will already have to start re grouping for next season. They are desperate to sign up a couple of new midfielders and strikers if they are to come straight back up should they get relegated. The 2nd X1 continued there poor season of results and after a tight first half where they went in at the break 1-0 down faded badly in the second when 3 further goals were scored.
On Sunday the Ladies 1st X1 entertained Maidstone in the Kent Cup Semi-Final. After the bleak season in the league the squad were looking forward to getting through to the final of this competition. Unfortunately, Maidstone who are a young up and coming side completely dominated the match and BBHC had no answer to there obvious superiority. The goals went in at regular intervals and Maidstone ended up winning 8-0. BBHC battled till the end but to no avail and will now have to try and get something out of what remains of the league season.

Sunday Men's Kent Cup Semi Final
BBHC 0 Old Holcombeians 3
The men's 1st X1 had a reasonably easy win over Crawley although they took there time to settle and only went into half-time with a 1-0 lead courtesy of a fine strike mid-way through the half from player manager Steve Ruddocks. Two quick goals at the beginning of the second half from Dean Wheeler and Dan Lucas gave the team more confidence and they dominated possession and play with further goals coming from Wheeler and Ruddocks again plus a fine individual effort from Henrico Murphy. This 6-0 win sets everything up for next weeks top of the table clash with Sutton Valence, the winner of this match should then be crowned champions of the league.
The 2nd X1 played leaders Sutton Valence away and in a poor game found themselves 1-0 down to the home sides first attack after 10 minutes. Almost immediately BBHC went on the attack and from some poor defending the ball broke to Mark Rochford who did well to stretch and get his stick on the ball to equalise. From this point the game became scrappy and tempers were getting high, the home side knew if they could get a draw they were almost certain of gaining promotion. Throwing caution to the wind in the second half BBHC piled forward and created a few opportunities which were either missed or good saves were made by the goalkeeper. This also led to some breakaway opportunities for the home side and Phil Watson in goal pulled off some fine saves. In the end a 1-1 draw was a fair result and it looks like BBHC will have to spend another season in this division.
The 3rd X1 could only draw with Herne Bay 2-2 with goals by Andy Galbraith and Warren Driscoll, however, there promotion chances are still strong and the next couple of games are crucial to there hopes of going up. The result of the day belonged to the 4th X1 who recorded there first win to lift them off the bottom of division 4 with goals by Darren Storey and Ian MacAdam. The 5th X1 also had a fine win 4-3 against Holcombe with a brace of goals apiece from Davenport and King.
Finally the Veterans played local rivals Blackheath and came out 3-0 winners with fine strikes from Palmer 2 and skipper Lanigan.
On Sunday the 1st X1 played Old Holcombeians in the Semi-Final of the Kent Cup and although losing 3-0, proved that they are an ever improving side. After watching the first Semi where Burnt Ash had lost to Beckenham 13-0, most of the crowd were expecting a similar scorline for BBHC against a side 2 divisions above them. How wrong could they be, BBHC started off confidently and with better finishing from Dean Wheeler and Henrico Murphy could have been 2 goals up. Mid-way through the half Holcs broke away and with a flowing move scored a goal against the run of play. BBHC lost there way for the final 15 minutes of the half and Holcs increased there lead from a penalty short corner which flew in via Lee Cooks glove in goal. The second half was much the same with BBHC pushing forward but unable to convert there penalty short corners. Lee Cook in goal was bringing off fantastic saves to keep Old Holcs at bay when they got there rare breakaway chances and was rewarded with the man of the match award. Holcs increased there lead with a scrappy third goal but BBHC kept going and could not find the clinical touch when it was needed in the striking area. Old Holcs knew at the end that they had been in a tough game and were grateful to have got passed BBHC to face Beckenham at the end of April in the final.
Ladies
Printwize East Division 1 - 1st X1 0 Crostyx 7
With the 1st X1 being the only BBHC ladies game on hopes were high of a good performance against Printwize League leaders Crostyx ahead of next Sunday's Kent Cup semi-final versus Maidstone, 1.30pm Erith School Sports Centre. Unfortunately they produced there worst performance of the season and confidence is at an all time low. Some serious work needs to be done this week to put things right, although relegation is now almost a certainty. Crostyx took full advantage of BBHC poor defending and showed why they are top of the league with some ruthless finishing to run out comfortable 7-0 winners.

Sunday 2nd Round of Veterans Kent Cup
BBHC Veterans (Hamlets) 3 Beckenham 4
(Palmer 2 & Richmond)
The men's 1st X1 had a tough fixture away to Eastbourne who were lying 4th in the table before today's game. Due to traffic problems the team only arrived 10 minutes before the start and pre match preparations were therefore not good. It took BBHC a while to get going but with there first decent passing move were rewarded after 15 minutes when Pete Stanley rounded off some good passes with a fine strike. Eastbourne hit back immediately and scored an equaliser after some poor BBHC defending, the score remained 1-1 until half-time. The second half was a drastic improvement on the first and BBHC stepped up there level of play. Constant pressure paid off when Henrico Murphy got back to scoring after several barren weeks with a great individual goal mid-way through the half. BBHC pressed home this advantage and player manager Steve Ruddocks scored a third in the dying minutes to give the away side a deserved win. The team although one point behind leaders Sutton Valence but with a game in hand are handily placed to get that automatic promotion spot. This sets them up nicely for next weeks when they play Crawley at home on the Saturday and then on Sunday at 1.30pm Erith School play Old Holts in the semi-final of the Kent Cup.
The 2nd X1 played local rivals Burnt Ash which is always a feisty affair. After a stop start sort of season BBHC set about the game as if they wanted to prove how good they can be on there day. They dominated possession and were rewarded when captain Mark Ashby opened the scoring with a great strike from a penalty corner mid-way through the half. With minutes to go in the half the home side capitalised on some scrappy defending and Alan Sains nipped in to score a second. The second half proved a one sided affair with BBHC pushing players forward and further goals came from Ashby(2) to complete his hat-trick, Sains again and Dave Jones. Burnt Ash were well and truly beaten and if BBHC can keep this standard of play up, promotion could be possible.
The 3rd X1 although depleted in personnel had a great result against a strong Folkstone side. Winning 4-1 with goals by Phil Price (2), Andy Galbraith & Warren Driscoll, they also now have a realistic chance of automatic promotion. Captain Matt Jobson has built a resilient side playing good hockey and with some key games to come the squad is in confident mood of achieving promotion.
On Sunday the veterans played Beckenham in the cup and were unlucky to lose 4-3 in a tight game. BBHC got off to a flying start when they took the lead in the opening minute with Ian Palmer getting the final touch to a hard hit shot into the attacking area. Beckenham got stronger as the half went on and equalised with a fine strike from a penalty corner mid-way through the half. This momentum was kept up and they scored two soft goals towards the end of the half and it looked like a drubbing may take place. However, after a fine move by BBHC Peter Richmond got on the end of a poor bit of defending and got his rewards by scoring the second goal. The second half saw BBHC pushing on for the equaliser and they got it with a fine strike by Palmer to tie the game up at 3-3. With both sides getting tired it was just a question of who had the extra legs, unfortunately for BBHC it was Beckenham who managed to score a winner in the dying minutes despite some fine saves from the BBHC goalkeeper.
Ladies
Printwize East Division 1 - 1st X1 2 Broxbourne 3
(Henderson & Phipps)
2nd X1 0 Sevenoaks 4
3rd X1 0 Tunbridge Wells 2
The ladies 1st X1 who have hardly played in recent weeks due to weather and lack of opposition started off slowly against Printwize opposition Broxbourne and the lack of play showed when they were completely dominated in the first half and found themselves 3-0 down at the break. After what can only be described as a harsh team talk by deputy captain Debbie Henderson the team came out in the second half and nearly pulled off a dramatic recovery. First Henderson herself scored a goal from a penalty corner then Chloe Phipps got a second following up on another fine strike by Henderson. On a couple more occasions they nearly scored again but were unlucky with good saves by the oppo's goalkeeper and some strange umpiring decision. Time beat them in the end but with this fighting spirit the rest of the season may gain some momentum.

5th X1 0 Blackheath 4
BBHC Veterans (Hamlets) 4 Addiscombe 1
(Palmer, Richmond, Billings & Perman)
The 1st X1 fought out a hard earned win against a side that had improved dramatically from there first meeting earlier in the season. Kings actually took a deserved lead mid-way through the first half to lead 1-0 at half time. After a stern talking to by player manager Steve Ruddocks BBHC came out and played much better and deservedley equalized with a fine strike by Dan Kucas. BBHC kept up the pressure and were rewarded with another fine goal by manager Ruddocks. They controlled the game from this point on and ran out 2-1 winners. This win keeps them nicely placed at the top of the league.
The 2nd X1 had a hard game away at Gillingham, they had drawn earlier in the season and the team knew they were in for a tough game. This it proved to be with much of the game fought in mid-field with few scoring opportunities being created. BBHC did not help there cause by arguing amongst themselves in the first half, manager Bobby Brookfield had plenty of things to sort out in the team talk at half time. Playing a slightly different system in the second half seem to give the team more confidence and they carved out one or two good scoring chances which were nearly taken by Sains and Jones. 2 minutes from time a penalty corner was awarded to BBHC and with a clean strike captain Mark Ashby scored a cracker of a goal. However, Gillinham/Anchs hit back hard and Ashby gave away cheap possession in mid-field and from this attack the opposition got a penalty corner of there own with only seconds left on the clock. From this they luckily got a deflection and the ball broke to there centre forward who made no mistake to equalize. BBHC were devastated and this result has harmed there hopes of getting an automatic promotion place.
The 3rd X1 kept up there recent good form and even though they had an under strength side beat Old Willies 2-0 with a brace of goals by Mark Hickman to continue there push for automatic promotion.
The 4th X1 who have had a season to forget produced one of there best displays and were unlucky to lose 2-1 to a very strong Old Holts side. Fine performances came from Barry Stott and goalkeeper Armarind. The veterans produced another fine display to set themselves up nicely for the 2nd round of the Kent Cup next Sunday against Beckenham (1.30pm at Lloyds Bank sports ground). They could have won by more but were happy enough with a 4-1 win, they now have Ian Palmer back playing and he rewarded the side with a fine individual goal.
