Men's Report

1st XI 1 - 1 Marden Russets 1st XI (A)
BbHC's Men's 1st team had a big game facing top of the league titans Marden Russets. The team were not going to let Marden's impressive 12 wins from 13 have any effect on their attitudes, especially after dominating Horsham last week. The game started as expected with striker Tom Golding firing in from all angles and Marden coming back fast on the breaks to which the solid line of the BBHC defence comfortably controlled. After some tactical genius from a Mr David Pyke, BBHC managed to trick the Marden defence in a short corner and allow Sukh Chaggar to fire a rocket to the roof of the net and make it 1-0 at half time.

The second half showed the BB determination with all players working together and getting back for the team when Pyke got a yellow for lashing out after being tripped, but the effort from BB were over hauled by a soft goal to make the game 1-1. The team then through striker Tom Golding had 2 final chances but were finely saved by the Marden keeper.

The game finished 1-1 with striker Tom Golding for his efforts being made man of the match and Andrew Horsman for a string of errors throughout the day including going to the wrong pitch being award DoD.

[Tom Golding]

3rd XI 0 - 4 Blackheath 3rd XI (A)
The match did not start out well, but with a no-show on the morning of the match leaving the team with only 10 players. The aim was to recover the 3 point conceded last week due to forfeiting that game. However, in the first 10 minutes we were not our best. Some badly timed passes around the back allowed Blackheath to put three goals away very quickly. However, we turned it around and with some strong play by Andy Franklin and James Smith in the middle. We made some promising moves up the pitch setting up Chuckie but due to some fantastic goal-keeping by the Blackheath GK (ex-National League and on a sabbatical, he told us in the pub afterwards), we ended the first half 3:0 down.

After the usual team talk and sharing of the Banana (!), we took to the field once more. This half we were more dominating, gaining many short corners. Alas, the vital comeback goal was still elusive, mainly due to again the fantastic Blackheath Goalie. As tiredness set in, the game became more open and Blackheath took advantage of their extra player and scored one more. The game went one and again we had more dominating play due to the quick passing between the defence, midfield and forwards.

The final score was 4:0 to Blackheath which is not bad when we only had 10 players, one being 13 and the other being 14. Nathan Dixon was making his debut for the men and Kieron Baker made only his second appearance for the 3rd XI. Both of these colts performed excellently and did both themselves and the club proud. Furthermore the whole team never dropped their heads and fought to the end.

Thanks goes to Steve Webster for umpiring once more.

On a final note, a minute's silence was held at the start of the game after the sad passing of Colin Brine during the week. Colin was a fine servant to the club and he will be greatly missed.

[Gareth Jones]

4th XI 5 - 2 Sevenoaks 7th XI (H)
After a win and a draw in the league so far in 2012 the 4's were hoping to keep their unbeaten record going against Sevenoaks, a team they beat 3-0 earlier in the season.

The 4's started the game at a fast pace with Andy Tither causing problems in the Sevenoaks defence and Pete Allen just missing the target with a shot in the opening period. After Pete missed a further opportunity it was Andy Tither who opened the scoring from a short corner. With Pete missing the goal from a narrow angle, Sevenoaks were coming into the game and looking dangerous from short corners. However, a Sevenoaks offence in the D gave BBHC a penalty stroke which Captain John Gibbard coolly converted.

Half time 2-0.

With BBHC creating a number of openings which they failed to convert, Sevenoaks pulled a goal back from a breakaway to leave the game finely balanced at 2-1. A foul in the D gave BBHC a further penalty stroke which was again coolly converted by skipper John Gibbard. Darren Storey extended the lead with a run from the half way line that took him into the area his shot going between the stranded Sevenoaks keepers legs. Sevenoaks got a second after lax BBHC defending, but Andy Tither got the reward for his explosive running with a second goal. There was still time for BBHC to miss further chances through Mark Hudson with an open goal at his mercy and Pete Allen who only had the keeper to beat.

Thanks to Mark Bettany for umpiring.

MOM – Darren Storey – Great performance
DOD – Pete Allen – Could have scored 5 or 6

Ladies' Report

1st XI 3 - 4 Thurrock 1st XI (H)
BBHC started strongly, putting Thurrock under pressure. It didn't take long until a long ball was struck by Sam Hall from a 16 straight to Mazza Weeks on the forward line. Facing a two-on-one situation, slipped the ball to Natalie Lane, who struck the ball into the bottom left hand corner.

Thurrock eventually found their feet and managed to equalise from a break, striking the ball past a BBHC defenders ear into the back of the net. This spurred Thurrock on to score another from a short corner, taking the game to 2-1 at half time.

B's didn't start the second half as well as expected and it wasn't long till the score line reached 4-1. This didn't dampen B's spirits, who kept up the fight and soon found themselves with a free hit from outside the D. This was taken quickly by Pippa Pennell, finding Mazza at the top of the D, who struck the ball on the reverse, taking the score line to 4-2.

BBHC made good movement and one-on-ones from Sorcha Crowley, however there were some unfortunate decisions from the umpires against us. B's eventually found themselves with another attacking opportunity and it was a case of deja vu as Mazza received the ball top of the D and took another controlled reverse strike into the goal.

Full time 4-3

[Karen Hall]

2nd XI 2 - 0 Maidstone 3rd XI (A)
BBHC Ladies 2nd XI travelled to Maidstone on Saturday to take on Maidstone 3's. A minute's silence was held at the beginning of the game after the sad passing of Colin Brine during the week, as Ian Brine now plays at Maidstone HC.

Maidstone are currently 2nd to the bottom of the league so there should have been no problems playing them. However, BBHC wanted to play their game and so came out hard straight from the start. Within the 1st minute, Vicky Jones was passed the ball and held the ball slightly until a clear pass was available to Caitlin Coleman, who was near the top of the Maidstone D on her own. Caitlin received the ball but unfortunately could not convert. BBHC continued to dominate the game and had numerous opportunities. After about 15 minutes, one of these chances was finally converted giving BBHC the lead. Although BBHC dominated, Maidstone did have their chances but some fantastic keeping from Karen White ensured that none were converted.

Although the Ladies 2nd XI have been working hard to improve on their penalty corner conversion rate, they still seem to have have problems getting the ball into the net from the set pieces. During the game BBHC were awarded numerous penalty corners and one was eventually put away after a nice ball out from Zoe Hubbard went straight to Helen Lucas who picked it up cleanly and then coolly smacked it into the back of the net. BBHC went into the half time break 2-0.

During the 2nd half, BBHC continued to pile on the pressure but no more goals were forth coming and again, great saves from Karen White ensured that the score remained at 2-0 to BBHC. Although the players were a little disappointed that only 2 goals were scored, a win is a win and BBHC should be happy with the result.

Player of the match went to Karen White who had an absolutely superb game. Well done ladies and well played.

Colts' Report

U14 Boys 8 - 0 Holcombe "D" (A)
After a very up and down first half of the season, today's game was going to be interesting. Traveling away to Holcombe although not far; always seems to demotivate team even before they get on the park.

At one stage it was going to be the weather that was going to hold us up, but the fog cleared enough for us to play. Our team were in high spirits as usual (with too much chat off the pitch and not enough on). With wonder team support and play and individual skills from Nathan Dixon and Arjan Phull, we were off to a flying start, with 7 goals from open play in the 1 st half.

With a few changes and a request not to demoralise the opposite complete; the team increased their passing game and communication and showed themselves how good they can be, with all of them putting in great performances and lots of effort. Rosie Jones managed to get on the score sheet, late in the 2nd half. However BBHC should have had a hat full as Ben Antwi and even by a debut winger Mya Wander could aslo have scored. Better luck next time.

Final score BBHC 8 Holcombe 0

With thanks as always to Parents, Carers and other family members who drive and support in all weathers.

Next game at home is on the 29th February, so if you have some free time come and cheer on the team.

Men's Report

1st XI 5 - 3 Horsham 1st XI (A)
BBHC traveled to Horsham to improve on their first leg loss.  BBHC stuck to their game plan to soak up the pressure and to catch Horsham on the counter. B's allowed them most of the ball in the first 20 minutes, after some outstanding saves by Steve Porter in the B's goal. Jamie Perfitt used his pace down our right side, slipped the ball to Peter Stanley to put it into an empty net! 0-1.

After an open 10 minute period, Horsham split the B's defence to find a free player at the top of the D to fire home 1-1.

With just minutes on the clock till half time B's were happy to keep possession, once again we worked the ball well down our right, once again they couldn't handle the pace of Perfitt who won a penalty corner. A drag flick from Sukh Chaggar in the bottom right took the B's in at half time 2-1 up.

All to play for, the B's were all ears at the halftime team talk from Manager Paul Harvey.  15 minutes into the 2nd half brought an inspired substitution, On came Tom "BOOM" Golding. He received the ball at the top of the Horsham "D" and hit an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner 3-1.

This game was far from over and was being played at a frantic pace with just 17 minutes left on the clock.  There were 3 minutes of goals galor. Horsham pulled it back to 2-3 and within just 30 seconds Tom BOOM BOOM Golding scored his 2nd and just seconds later B's scored a well worked goal finished by Andrew Horsman!  2-5.

With 10 on the clock Horsham threw everything (including the kitchen sink) at the B's and could only get a consolation goal.

Final score 3-5 and a fantastic team performance BBHC.

[Paul Harvey]

4th XI 2 - 2 Tunbridge Wells Monarchs (H)
This week the 4's knew they were in for a tough game against a well organised Tunbridge Wells team who won the earlier encounter 5-3.

The opening exchanges were fairly even with both sides creating opportunities; unfortunately it was Tunbridge Wells who took the lead. This stirred BBHC into action and the 4's pushed forward taking control of the game in search of an equaliser. A short corner was stopped on the line illegally by a Tunbridge Wells defender on the line. Dazie converted the resulting penalty stroke.

Half time 1-1.

BBHC dominated the second half and after missing a number of chances finally took the lead when Pete Allen slotted home from close range. With BBHC clinging on to their lead Tunbridge Wells pushed forward and after a catalogue of BBHC defensive mistakes equalised with the last touch of the game.

Thanks to Alex Webster for umpiring.

MOM –Henry – Prolific work rate
DOD –Pete Allen – Last ten seconds

Ladies' Reports

1st XI 1 - 1 Gore Court 1st XI (A)
Following their good start to 2012 with a comfortable win over Gillingham Anchorians last week, Bexleyheath and Belvedere Ladies 1 st XI were feeling confident playing away at Gore Court.

The match started at a good pace with BBHC bossing the game and putting pressure on the gore court defence. Hannah Johnson had a one on one with the keeper but failed to convert. Gore Court put up a good fight and made some fair attacks of their own but the half time whistle went with the score still 0-0.

The second half was much the same with both teams doing having equal amounts of attack. Gore court managed to open the scoring first with a well executed penalty corner which BBHC felt had been controversially awarded.

BBHC kept their heads up though and continued to push forward. Then with 2 minutes to go, a super pass from Maz Weeks found an unmarked Sorcha Crowley at the top of the D and with a clean sweep she placed the ball in the back of the net for the game to finish 1-1. Although not a full 3 points were won, BBHC came away with a well fought point.

1st XI 0 - 7 Canterbury (A) - Kent Cup - 2nd?/3rd? Round (Sunday 22nd January)
BBHC ladies 1st team travelled to Canterbury for the 3rd(?) round of the Kent cup.

With 3 regular players missing (including their injured captain), no coach, and knowing they were the under dogs (Canterbury being 2 leagues above), BBHC decided to give it their best shot!

Canterbury were keen to show off their skills to the visitors but BBHC had some impressive skills of their own and played some fine hockey across the whole pitch.

Some excellent defending kept the score at 0-0 until 18 minutes when a well rehearsed short corner routine opened the scoring for Canterbury.

BBHC were undeterred and continued to attack playing some lovely hockey. Canterbury were unhappy about this & changed their team around, using some of their 5 subs & putting some ex-international players forward. A second goal was scored before the half time break.

BBHC were a little tired in the second half and an injury to Sarah Harvey resulted in her leaving the pitch possibly for stitches to her cheek & BBHC going down to the bare 11.

Canterbury upped the pressure & managed to score another 5 goals. An unfair reflection of the game. There's no denying that Canterbury were the better team but BBHC certainly gave them a good run for their money.

2nd XI 1 - 1 New Beccehamian 1st XI (H)
BBHC Ladies 2nd XI took on top of the League New Beccehamian's at Erith. This was their first game back after Christmas as the first game had been cancelled due to a frosty pitch. Having won their last 4 games before the Christmas break, BBHC were determined not to lose. Both teams came out hard and the game appeared pretty equal. BBHC had a few chances at goal but none were converted. In return, New Becc's also had their opportunities and about midway through the first half, they managed to convert one of them into a goal.

BBHC continued to apply the pressure and the whole team played really well. The first half remained at 0-1 to New Beccs.

BBHC did not let their heads drop in the second half and they continued to pressure the New Becc's defence. The game remained pretty even with BBHC desperate to get the equalising goal and New Becc's desperate to put themselves further ahead. BBHC's persistence prevailed and with about 1 minute to go, BBHC were awarded a penalty corner. The corner was not converted initially but the ball remained in the New Becc's D and a cracking lifted strike was made by Sarah Whale. The goalie, by some miracle, managed to get her hands to hit but she palmed the ball forward right into the path of Julie Lake who then made sure the ball went in the back of the net. New Becc's made some unfounded appeals that a BBHC raised her stick but the umpires were correct in their decision that the only raised stick and hands belonged to the New Becc's goalie - had the goal not been scored, a flick should have been awarded due to goalie palming the ball away in the air. But that didn't matter as the score was awarded and BBHC had drawn level. The final whistle was blown and BBHC had managed to steal a point.

Player of the match went to Marnie Blackmore and well played to the whole team for the great result.

Men's Report

1st XI 2 - 4 Herne Bay 1st XI (H)
With the start of the second half of the season, BBHC Mens 1st team played bottom of the table Herne Bay at home.  An early start meant that the pitch was still a little frosty as the game got started.  The early pressure was all BBHC with several chances falling their way.  Herne Bay were pinned back for the first 15 minutes but it was a quick break from the lefthand side that left a stunned BBHC 1:0 down.  BBHC's heads did not drop and they were right back into thier stride creating several more chances but went in at half time 1:0 down.  The worst miss of the half came when Ben Bradley rode several tackles as he dribbled around the back from the right side, only to see Peter Stanley slash at the ball and put it wide of the open goal from very close range.

The second half started as the first had begun with BBHC pushing Herne Bay onto their back ofot. Another fast break caught BBHC out again and a hard low shot put Herne Bay two up.  BBHC had squandered several short corner chances during the game, with the Herne Bay keeper being solid between the posts but a change in tactic with a high drag flick down the centre from Sukh Chaggar saw BBHC pull the score back to 2:1.  BBHC kept pushing forward and eventually a chance fell to Tom Golding, who is having a strong season for BBHC up front, finished with a sweet strike.  At 2:2 the game looked set for a thrilling finish.  The game changed when some rasher harsh umpiring decisions led to Pykey being yellow carded for verbal and BBHC were down to 10 men.  BBHC still looked the stronger even with the changed formation but a miss hit cross from the far left side bobbled across the pitch, landing on a Herne Bay stick for them to take the lead. BBHC battled on only to conceed a P flick late on when Ben Bradley was judged to have sandwiched the Herne Bay striker on his own!

An unfortunate loss which could have been oh so different.  BBHC can take a lot of positives from this game into next week which will be a tough game away at Horsham.

MoM: Andrew Horsman
DoD: Peter Stanley

[Peter Stanley]

4th XI 4 - 2 Old Bordenian CCB (A)
On returning from the Christmas break the 4 th team travelled to Sittingbourne to face a youthful Old Bordenians side who had won the previous encounter 10 - 3.

The more experienced BBHC contained a number of wise old heads who controlled the game by soaking up the Old Boy's pressure and hitting them on the break. This tactic worked once, twice and then again to give BBHC a commanding lead with all three goals coming from evergreen centre forward Andy Humber. Old Bordenians struck from a short corner to give the 4th team a 3-1 half time lead.

In the second half it was the BBHC defence that came to the fore, with great performances from Sal Muhammed, Dave King, Simon Brown, Mark Hudson and Sam Cuthbert that neutralised the Old Bordenian's attack. The Old Boy's did score again from a swift break down the BBHC right that was converted at the far post, but with the game finely balanced a counterattack by BBHC was converted by Pete Allen from a narrow angle to seal the victory.

Joe Brown again failed to get his name on the score sheet.

MOM –Andy Humber – Hat trick
DOD –Joe – What planet is this boy on?

[John Gibbard]

Ladies' Report

1st XI 4 - 1 Gillingham Anchorians 1st XI (H)
The day started cold and icy but the sun decided to come out as BBHC ladies 1s took on Gillingham Anchorians at Erith School for the first game back after Christmas.

BBHC started off strong and showed this by converting their first short corner of the game by Samantha Hall within 5 minutes. With the Bs in control of the game Gillingham got a rare attack and managed to get a goal back bringing the game back level, but that didn't last too long as BBHC had a shot on goal which was stopped on the line by the defenders foot. Cooly and calmly, Miranda Weeks stepped up to convert the flick putting the game at 2-1. As the first half came to an end Gillingham ended it the better side.

The BBHC ladies came out looking like a different side to how they ended the first half with many attacks on goal and this pressure soon paid of when the Bs were awarded their second flick of the game and was yet again nicely placed my Miranda Weeks.

It was coming to the end of the game and the lack of fitness was starting to show and Gillingham were having their fair share of the ball and then in the last 5 minutes Sharon Barnes released the ball to Sorcha Crowley who made a run towards goal, dodging the defenders in her way and to cleanly hit it past the keeper.

Final result: 4-1

[Sorcha Crowley]

3rd XI 1 - 1 Blackheath 3rd XI (H)
Well a very happy New Year to you dear reader, and welcome back to the second half of the season.

After a delayed start, Blackheath got off to a spritely start, with us still wondering which end of the hockey stick to use! But after a wobbly start, all the old ( very old in some cases) came flooding back.
Some fine passes from Cara, Holly, Elaine and especially Hannah enabled us to push up the pitch. To be fair it was a pretty even game.

Second half showed a very welcome return of Maggie up the left, with Emma scoring a great goal thanks to some fine runs by Cara.

Ang and Ruth were excellent in defence.

A fair result, some great hockey - job done.

Thanks to Jill for umpiring and cara for an excellent sausage casserole.

Next week away to Edenbridge.
